Clock management is horrible and cost us a win at Chippewa. We have a RB averaging over 7 yards a carry but yet he only gets 4 to 7 carries a game, we hardly use him,,,why??? But more than anything why are there only 30 kids playing football and 31 playing soccer? I think it is a direct reflection on the coaching staff not building relationship with these kids, but its kinda hard to do when not one coach on the staff is teacher or anything. No one at school during the day to recruit or build relationships with these boys. These problems have always been there but a 5-0 start will hide things but 2 losses in a row will make them noticeable again.
It's worth noting that the fact that the kid isn't used that often might be WHY he's averaging that many yards a carry. When you become the feature back in a run offense, you become the focus of the defense. Just the way it works.

I still have a lot of confidence in most of the coaching as a whole. I say if they manage two wins in the next three weeks, they still eek into the playoffs at 7-3. But if they do in fact go 6-4, they're definitely out.

For the record, when I played, there were years where I virtually never saw anyone in the coaching staff during the fall while in school. That didn't really make much of a difference, and I don't think that has NEARLY the effect that others think it does.

When dalessandro got hurt in the first series, I would not have bet on them to win, but the team rose above and bidlack has been very solid (dom was a very good db as well). They have looked well coached all year
I have to agree. This team is the scariest team I've seen in the WCAL since the 2011 Norwayne team, especially when you factor in the school size and team size.

O-Trap we are in a very tough region! 7-3 will not get us in, even at 8-2 the projection only had us sitting in the 7 th spot. I still say 6-4 as Dalton will name the score and we have not beaten Hillsdale in 10 years. The clock is ticking on this head coach, Schrock had already turned the program around in 6 seasons. Time to hire an man from the outside!!
  • oldsmithie
O-Trap Did you not play on the 2002 team? If you did there were at least 3 coaches still teaching at the HS Schrock, Saris and Hardman.
  • WooVader
I think having coaches in the building helps, but it doesn't have to be the head coach. I think that is the Northwestern set-up. I still think the Head coach is solid but he could get better help. Hillsdale isn't Smithville's rival now are they? Every time you play at Hillsdale the calls always seem to go the Falcons way. At least you don't have to play in the dark anymore since they got new lights.

It is a tough region. It'd depend on which of the last two teams we'd beat. Obviously, we should thrash Waynedale, but I think 7-3 COULD get us in if the win is the right one(s).

Maybe not. I'm not crunching the numbers or anything.

I was around during their time, definitely, and I did take classes from two of them during my time at Smithville, but not every fall semester. There were fall semesters where, even though they were there, I didn't see them much during the day unless I ducked out of study hall to sneak into a class or two of theirs. Did that a few times.

Can you few stop with the trolling? It's annoying.

Not trolling at all but you got it boss! Vader I think we should stop...the defense rests!

Will Coach Stanley be stepping down at the season's end Beast? If I recall, one of your statements was something along the lines that Matt should have done that when the Bears went 0-10 for the first time.

Been quiet this year because quite honestl, very little constructive football talk, and more of the same drama and BS out of Waynedale. However, I finally got to the point where I had to chime in. First, yes I was critical of the way Zurcher utilized talent, and I felt that he did not maximize the talent that he had. This was particularly the case during the last two to three years of his tenure. However, I never questioned his character, and often stated that I felt he was a good role model, and teacher. That being said, what has gone on at Waynedale is a travesty, and an embarrassment to high school athletics. The infighting, backstabbing, and sabotage is sickening. What the current coach did is a disgrace. What's an even a bigger mystery is how the school board, boosters, AD etc...chose Stanley as the head coach. It certainly was not based on football experience, or a solid resume as a football coach. I think we all get the idea of how and why he was hired. That being said, in all of my years of coaching, or watching football, I have never seen a team that has the resources to be successful be so poorly prepared. Sure, I've seen worse teams, but these have been urban schools that were lucky to have equipment. I'm referring to a school that has the resources to compete. Does that mean 10-0? No, but not 0-10 either. The in game coaching is a joke. It is nothing more than let's feature my kid, and pad his sats. How do you explain attempting to utilize a power running game down by 40? The organization and execution of this program is ridiculous. That is not a matter of talent. You can't teach speed, or size, but you sure can teach basic things such as alignment, or how to change personnel. I guess it just amazes me that this school district has allowed this to happen, and at the expense of young innocent kids. The only way you will ever cleanse this to clean house entirely, and go outside for a replacement, but based on the stuff that has gone on here, that will never happen.

I'll go a step farther. This isn't only the fault of the principal, AD, boosters, board of education, and new head coach. This is the fault of the superintendent.

We share the same guy and I haven't thought too poorly of him until recently. Orrville has made some very questionable decisions on personnel, athletics, and operations. He is very visible at Orrville and our "spotlight" events. I can't imagine how the other districts feel. I know he isn't nearly as involved at the other districts. It seems to me that the people hee has left in charge in his absence are not doing what's best. I've heard from a few teachers in the Waynedale district that they aren't happy with their upper end management. This situation is just one of most visible of many poor decisions made by Ritchie and his cronies.

As a boy I got to watch Smithville play in its first playoff and then I got to play for Coach Schrock. None of that would have happened if they negative people that wanted to get rid of Coach Schrock had their way. Fortunately there were enough people that saw what a good man he is. I had to leave Smithville for my job and moved back to the area a few years ago and have been able to make most of the games since I have been back. For the past few years many of you have have allowed someone to attack a good man at Waynedale and never call him out. I don't think Coach Schrock would be impressed with your lack of action. From what I have seen of the team the last few years, they must have learned from you to look for somebody else to get the job done. I think you have cursed Smithville football. My work here is done.

Boy am I confused! Woo Vader, I have read and re-read your statement and find it hard to believe you ever played for Smithville or coach Schrock. It does seem that a lot of Waynedale folks have gotten new screen names and tried to pass themselves off as outsiders!!! Oh well onward and upward! I almost hate to bring it up but Smithville plays Waynedale this Friday in Apple Creek!!

Wait! You said Waynedale plays Smithville?.......

Well the season is winding down. Smithville won an ugly game (too many penalties, sloppy play) over Waynedale. Even though the Smithies won they dropped 3 places in the playoff standings and sit at number 14!!! Even if they some how beat Hillsdale next week the playoffs are doubtful! I have been to 7 Smithie games this season and I have enjoyed the great weather this Fall! Hopefully the Smithville BOE takes a long hard look at the Football program and makes some changes!!! time to hire from outside the system. Six seasons without a Championship, six seasons of at least 3 league losses, time to fix the problem!! or face the fact that we now have a mediocre Football program.

Well, you've had a solid/above average football team for the last decade+. Let's not look at just the last 6 years. Yes, from the 90's and early 2000's you had your run of 10-0/9-1 teams, but it looks like that cycle has passed. It's what happens at every small school. Four consecutive winning seasons in the WCAL is nothing to hang your head about and say the program needs overhauled. The roster numbers are solid and the kids play hard and are successful.

    Smithville
    2007 3-7
    2008 6-4
    2009 4-6
    2010 2-8
    2011 8-2* (playoffs)

    2012 5-5
    2013 1-9
    2014 6-4
    2015 7-3* (playoffs)
    2016 6-4
    2017 6-4/7-3

For some of us old timers we can remember Smithville football before Coach Schrock. For the most part it wasn't pretty. Coaching does make a difference. It is easy to become spoiled when things are going your way. I remember the times when Orrville, Dalton and Waynedale were the gold standards for the area year after year. The one thing they had in common was outstanding and pretty much stable coaching staffs.

Well boys guess I have to tell you look out for the (BOBCAT STALK) next year, Nuff said.
