The WCAL 2017
-
oldsmithieI have been a little bit out of the loop, heart surgery and recovery have kept me busy. Any word on the teams for the upcoming season.
-
chiefy jonesHope your recovery is going good OS. Looking forward to a great season.

1486wdKind of a lot of unknowns this year, norwayne has had it going for years now, but lose a monster Sr class, I still expect them to be solid. Hillsdale loses some studs as well, but I was impressed by their qb williams last year and he is back. Chippewa also loses some great seniors and I think will take a little bit of a step back. Dalton returns most of their starters, but lose two of their best players in fitzwater and Hershberger. Waynedale also returns a bunch of guys, but they were flat out bad last year - depends how those kids develop. Rittman and smithville I am not familiar with enough to say for sure. In other words, pretty wide open imo.
-
WCLfanUnlike last year, I don't think there's a true "favorite" this season. I can see Northwestern taking the biggest step back and waynedale, by default taking the biggest step forward. I could see any of the top 6 teams winning the WCAL this year
Chippewa
Hillsdale
Norwayne
Dalton
Smithville
Northwestern
Waynedale
Rittman -
Wcal observerHave to agree, the league is pretty open, and don't see anyone going unscathed. If pressed to pick a top 3, I would go with Chippewa, Dalton, and Hillsdale. His sale has experience at the QB position, Chippewa returns a lot of players now starting for year 2, and Dalton has plenty returning as well. Overall talent seems down, and the league is lacking star quality.

oldsmithieDid a little digging today and found the roster numbers for the league teams! I was shocked to see the decline in numbers!!!
Chippewa 15 varsity players
Rittman 24 varsity players
Smithville 27 varsity players
Northwestern 28 varsity players
Dalton 32 varsity players
Waynedale 37 varsity players
Norwayne 41 including Freshmen
Hillsdale 46 varsity players -

Not sure where you got that from, but Chippewa has over 30 kids.oldsmithie;1867047 wrote:Did a little digging today and found the roster numbers for the league teams! I was shocked to see the decline in numbers!!!

1486wdBulldogs have looked solid in their scrimmages, beating Malvern 21-0 and Triway 21-3

Referee1Don't see any Orrville Football threads so, I thought someone on this thread may be able to answer this... does anyone know how Orrville did against Lutheran West last Friday? Thanks!

Hey you guys!! -
oldsmithieWizard: I got the numbers off of Maxiprep. Could be that Chippewa did not fill out the roster info completely or maybe the 30 is with freshmen (most did not include Freshmen with the rosters).
-
dhs22pWho do you guys have in the Week 1 WCAL games?
Garaway @ Dalton
Richmond Heights @ Rittman
Smithville @ Tuslaw
Loudonville @ Northwestern
Warrensville Heights @ Norwayne
Chippewa @ Manchester
Tusky Valley @ Waynedale
Mapleton @ Hillsdale -
oldsmithieMy picks:
Dalton Over Garaway
Rittman over Richmond Heights
Smithville over Tuslaw (squeaker)
Northwestern over loudonville
Norwayne over WH
Manchester over Chippewa (squeaker)
Tusky over Waynedale
Hillsdale over Mapleton -
FlashOrrville definitely looked better in their scrimmage with LW. Scored 3-4 TDs with first string.
-
FlashDalton, Smithville, Northwestern winners. Orrville beats Wooster.
-
oldsmithieThe WCAL goes 6-2 in the first week!!! Smithville, Dalton,Norwayne, Northwestern, Hillsdale and Rittman all win. Chippewa and Waynedale lose.

green machineSmithville looked pretty good week one. We still have a lot to work on. We had trouble running the ball roughly 36 carries for 112 yards not smithie football!! But we threw for 185 yards and 3 td passes. plus the defense only created 4 turnovers all of last year and they had 7 versus Tuslaw. Our defense put pressure the QB getting 2 sacks and forcing bad throws. There is a website www.tntbroadcasting.wix.com/smithies. That broadcast all of smithville's games over the internet live. Its just like listening to a game on the radio and you can listen live anywhere in the world, its pretty cool!! I think Smithville will have their hands full with Triway it will be a test.

el choppo
Tuslaw is booty.. The WCAL is soft this year. I don't see any teams winning a playoff game. Smithville will get their wake up call this week when Triway just pounds them. Nothing is like the PAC 7 or 8 (with the exception of Orrville - they booty as well). But they would still win the WCAL (Weak Cupcake Average League)green machine;1869028 wrote:Smithville looked pretty good week one. We still have a lot to work on. oldsmithieHey El Choppo, sounds like you are down after you chipps took one on the chin last week! The WCAL stacks up very well against the Pac 8. As for Triway and Smithville, we shall see.

I'm not a Chippewa fan. I'm just an insightful observer. I picked norwayne to win the league last year and will do the same this year. When stacking up the wcal to the PAC, there is no comparison this year. Wcal is way way way downoldsmithie;1869619 wrote:Hey El Choppo, sounds like you are down after you chipps took one on the chin last week! The WCAL stacks up very well against the Pac 8. triway 28 Smithville 20 -
oldsmithieWell 28-20 is hardly a "pounding" I do not see the WCAL as way down and I will pick Dalton to win it all. Smithville is a different animal this year, able to pass and score quickly. The Smithie line is young but very big. Best of luck to all the area teams tonight. El Choppo, I went back and read some of your posts from last year and you sure sounded like a Chipp fan! you also picked Chippewa to win the league!!!!

I just went back and looked at your Predictions from last year (el choppo) you picked Chippewa to win the league not Norwayne.

green machineI think it will a good game. The one thing I have seen out of these 30 players is heart. They don't quit. Tuslaw was a very physical game. West Holmes vs Triway was really not that physical. Triway better be prepared to get hit tonight. I hope all the WCAL does well and stays healthy!!

oldsmithieThe WCAL goes 6-2 again this week! with Smithville, Norwayne, Dalton, Hillsdale, Chippewa and Rittman all winning!!! Waynedale and Northwestern lost this week! That makes the League 12-4 so far in non conference games and for (el choppo) the WCAL is 5-1 against the Pac 8. Smithville played and extremely physical game last night and won in the last 20 seconds of the game!!!! very exciting!!
