What happened to the Smithville guys? Anything new in Smithville?

I'll attempt to kickstart some football conversation...

Hillsdale and Loudonville is IMO this weeks marquee game, if the Falcons can pull an upset they should probably be considered as the early frontrunner for the league crown.

It's still early but I think Norwayne is on the cusp of a "reloading" season as opposed to a "rebuilding" season. Ontario is 1-1, both games against OCC teams, so this probably is the toughest test yet for the Cats.

Chippewa will likely take Tuslaw to the wood shed. Sept 26th vs Norwayne should tell us alot about who's who in the WCAL.

Rittman is 2-0 and Mapleton hasn't won or scored yet this season. That being said, I think this game is a tossup.

Smithville/Fairless has alot of intrigue. I feel like Fairless might be a favorite due to homefield advantage, but I keep hearing the Smithies are gonna suprise some people this year. Maybe that will start Friday night. I hope it does.

Waynedale is still something of a mystery. I doubt we'll find out much about them Friday as they face Triway, who appears to be this years 700LB gorilla of area teams. If weather doesn't slow Triway down, this will probably get ugly.

Northwestern is a total suprise and a complete mystery. Losing 10 of 11 starters on both sides of the ball from last years WCAL championship team, I frankly thought they would be 0-2 right now instead of 2-0. I guess we'll see if they are the real deal over the coming weeks.

Dalton/Timken could be a points coup for the Dawgs. I think they can beat D2 Timken, whether they will or not is to be decided. The Dawgs are my pick for a darkhorse WCAL contender.

Overall, I'm guessing this will be a rougher week for the WCAL than the fisrt 2. I think Chippewa is the only shoe-in for a win. Waynedale has the longest odds for victory and most of the rest could go either way. 6-2 or 5-3 would be great, 4-4 or 3-5 seems more realistic.

Red Rum, I think your spot on. As a whole I feel the league is down this year to many of the previous ones. That, and the fact that the competition has been poor (particularly for the favorites), makes this a wide open race. I'm with you 9/26 is the day things begin to clear up.

"Better than last year" doesn't mean Smithville was going to beat Moggy. I wouldn't be surprised to see that Mogadore team go 9-1 or 10-0, even with the bigger schools on the schedule.

This year's Smithville team is better in a few aspects:

    1. They hang onto the ball. In my own opinion, this was the most frustrating area of their game last year. Not only was it happening with too much frequency, but fumbling is something you can actively prevent. Good on the coaching staff for bettering the discipline and fundamentals that this team exhibits in ball security, and hats off to the players for taking it and going with it.

    2. The runners keep forward motion going after first contact. Several of the running backs seemed to be running with more purpose than last year. I don't know if it was a strength issue, but last year, there were a few too many run plays that ended at first contact for the ball-carrier. Good to see these guys running like they've got somewhere to go.

    3. The receivers can ... catch? Yep. They're not 2011 Norwayne, but they're far better in this category than those in my era remember Smithville being most years. They were even running pass plays on first and second downs for a couple series here and there. It was just weird. I wasn't sure what to do with it, but it seemed to work with more success than I would normally expect.

    4. The safety on the defensive side of the ball is actually fun to watch. A little small, but he doesn't shy away from making a play on the ball-carrier.

There are still some places that need work, of course:

    1. The defensive line and linebacker corp. had a rough time with Moggy. I couldn't tell if they couldn't find the ball or if they were just being blocked too well. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt with that Wildcats team being so darn good, but it still looked bad, and it largely attributed to the score being as lopsided as it was.

    2. Corners seemed to have trouble with finding the ball in the air in pass coverage. In some cases, it didn't even look like they turned to find it. Obviously, if that's the case, that's a problem. However, they do have good speed, so I think they can shore this up, because it's not the result of them just getting flat-out toasted.

This isn't a 10-0 Smithville team, as Mogadore demonstrated on Friday, but it's also not a 1-9 Smithville, like last year. We'll see how the year shakes out.

i think your spot on with what you have said... moggy is a very good team.... should make a deep run in the play offs. and with a few breaks smithville will be above 500 for the year...

What a game in Apple Creek tonight. Bears lead through most of the game until about the middle of the 3rd q when triway took the lead for good. Basically the difference was mostly senior group of Titans who executed a bit better than a very young Waynedale team. Carmichael is good and he has a lot of weapons at his disposal. The Bears moved the ball at will through the air and on the ground. Two big TDs called back for the Bears broke their back in second half.
Waynedale was as good as I have seen in years and i only saw 1 maybe 2 seniors play all night. Triway won't lose with a weak Pac 7 schedule. I don't know if the defense is good enough to go deep in the playoffs? I did not see any indication they can stop the run or the passing attack of a really good team. The secondary was a really weak link and there was almost no pressure on the QB all night.
Give triway credit. They have a powerful offense which will probably score 60 plus every game.

Bears did a good job tonite.

Looks like they gave it their all & were getting gassed in later in the game.

I think the 1st quarter was nearly 50 minutes long.

I have to question the officiating though. (or lack of it ?)

I know I saw at least one reception bounce off the ground & a few other calls were pretty bizarre.:RpS_blink:

All in all I think the Triway people were totally surprised & got their eyes opened a little.

Watched this game on MCTV tonight, you have yourself a playmaker in Parker, there are qb's who are playmakers and qb's who need playmakers. Triway is the real deal.

74-47 was the final. And the triway QB is the real deal. He can do it all and has tremendous pocket presence. Just when you think you can lay the big hit on him he scampers away or makes the pass. The rest of the team, especially the defense will need a lot of work for a deep playoff run. On nearly every play Waynedale receivers easily beat their defenders and had separation. That is what surprised me the most was the Bears speed on offense. This year will be entertaining in the WCAL with every team looking solid except Rittman.

Walking by the field on my way in, I just had a gut feeling just by watching them warm up that they had a pep in their step and were ready and pumped for this game, and not afraid one bit. They won the coin toss and took the ball (which makes sense... if they won, it was gonna be in a shootout). Strausbaugh made big play after big play.

Of the 17 first half pass attempts for Waynedale, 13 went to #32. Kid is a stud, and caught passes of 44, 22, 22, 61, 23, 69 in the first half, 4 of those going for TDs. But like Havin Fun said, some of those were wide open. But others he just made a play. Thankfully for us, the game is 4 quarters, and Triway made excellent adjustments at halftime.

In the 1st half, Waynedale had 14 first downs, 32 points, 298 pass yards, 149 rush yards, and 0 punts.
In the 2nd half, Waynedale had 5 first downs, 15 points, 75 pass yards, 37 rush yards, and 3 punts.

Strausbaugh had 1 more big catch (TD of 32 yards) in 2nd half, but Riebe went 4-15 in 2nd half, compared to 11-17 in 1st half.

It's amazing to think that Triway scored 72 points and still had 3 turnovers and 2 other drives that failed on 4th down in Waynedale territory.

Kudos to Waynedale on an impressive game and performance. We knew coming in that Waynedale would be our toughest challenge of the year with athletic kids and a well-rounded offense, but the Golden Bears still gave us more than we bargained for. Congrats to our Triway coaching staff for making excellent adjustments, and our kids for executing down the stretch. Good luck the rest of the year to Waynedale.
  • Havin Fun
Great stats Pitman. As porous as the triway D was, I see no one who can't hold them to under 50 so who needs a defense?! Unless Carmichael gets hurt or they have to play in a rainstorm, this team is not losing.
The Bears have a big challenge in getting ready for Norwayne after this effort. Bears certainly had the toughest non league schedule in the WCAL this year.
  • WCALfootballfan
I attended the Wayndedale/Triway game last night. Wow! that's all I can say. I actually hung in until the end. There are some very talented kids on both of those teams. Waynedale is young and that's scary for the rest of the WCAL. Carmichael is the real deal. My real reason for attending was to see how Triway compared to the Norwayne teams of 2011 and 2012. I have been curious to see if they have what it takes to make a deep run in the playoffs. I'm not sure that's the case. Although their offense is dynamic it typically takes a pretty stout defense to have a shot at a final 4 or championship appearance. Waynedale picked Triway apart but lost their poise. Credit goes to Triway and their staff for keeping their heads up in this one. There is no quit in those kids. What an awesome game to watch......if you like offense.

WCAL is going to be a blast to watch this year!! IMP no one will have a perfect record. Anyone could be in the post season this year
  • Wcal observer
I agree I think that Waynedale played the best non-league schedule with Ridgewood and Triway. The supposed upper tier teams, Chippewa and Norwayne have yet to play a quality opponent, but have done what they are supposed to do so far. In my opinion the league seems to be down in quality, but better in terms of parity. I think Norwayne will benefit playing the Bears this week; will be tough to bounce back after last night. That being said Waynedale will benefit playing Chippewa the week following the Chipps playing the Cats. Thus, it could very well end up being a three way tie at the top. I just don't see any of the remaining teams being able to be consistent enough to finish at the top. However, that doesn't mean for one night they couldn't pull an upset. I'm still leaning towards Norwayne because they get Chippewa at home, and a spent Waynedale team this week. However, if it comes down to one player that you want to have the ball at crunch time, Breitenstine would be my choice. He seems to be the most dynamic player in the league, and has the most weapons at his disposal.

I went back and watched the Triway/Waynedale game. Maybe some of you wise old men from the creek can explain why Waynedale completely changed their defense after the 1st 2 series. We go from blitzing a big LB in the middle to a spread D with a MLB that's barely over 5ft tall. The Bears held them the 1st 2 drives. Why the change?

Well "wise one"...Do you REALLY think that was going to stop Triway??? Seriously???

Why don't you ask your grandson why they made the change? He should have been in those discussions.

Were you watching the same game? It DID stop them!
