2013 Orrville Red Riders football

And the Indians have been a great farm team for the Yankees since we were kids! Even Rocky Colavoto played & pitched in New York! Also at least my football team has been to 2 Super Bowls and my Riders have won a championship on the field at Mass.Sure is a boring thread until kickoff in 6 weeks

0-2 in those games, making them the first-place losers in those years. Um ... congratulations?

Also, Orrville is not the only team to win an on-the-field championship in Massillon. So ... cool, I guess?

I figured that he would be a kid that would step up. Dad certainly isn't a guy thats gonna go easy on him. I saw film of him from last year as an 8th grader and I was impressed. Looks like he has good speed and ran the ball hard. We will need a few of those youngsters to step-up for sure! But again....its all about staying healthy and that is hard to do in the OCC, especially with under 30 kids on roster.

Are there some kids that should be out and are not?

185 boys in the school from last OHSAA count and we have 28 on the team...I would say there are more than a few!

I know that Dane Kick (Sr, 2 way starter last year on O/D line) is not playing, nor is the Auble kid (SR, concussions). I wouldn't rule the Palmer kid out just yet...when things are actually mandatory, then he may show up.

That is really to bad about Auble kid. He is good size and his dad was a good athlete. How has he had concussions already or is this just a precaution and he does not want to play? Someone needs to get ahold of Palmer and Kick and give a little/big kick in the butt.

Kick is not playing because he needs to have shoulder surgery (similar to Summers' injury) but opted not to play instead. Palmer will not show until he HAS to...even then who knows if he will play. Auble has had several concussions from other activities I heard and the doctor will not release him to play. I would just like to know why none of the other 150+ boys in the school are not playing?

Well my math is not great but according to my math that makes a grand total of 15% willing to put in the time and become men. I will be there to support them!

This seems nuts to me. But I am getting old! Playing football at Orrville was what you grew up pretending you were doing in the street! I used to go to games and watch those guys and think they were like modern day gladiators! Leeder, Haley, Rice, Shoup, Bradley, Mosely..... I could go on and on. And when they came to coach us up on saturday mornings at the boys club I used to look at the bruises and cuts they had on their arms and bodies and imagine how tough they were and how I had to get tougher! They seemed larger than life to me! They REALLY did! When I got to high school I remember doing everything I could (or JUST enough) to get in the second chance room so I could break out the old films of those teams from the 80's! The idea of getting to put on that uniform on and represent all those players before me was something I really understood. I think we all did (well most of us) LOL! Time are a changing I guess.

All this Sure does make me have even MORE respect for the kids that have come out to make the commitment to putting on that uniform on Friday night! Ge get em fellas!!!! I assume we are going with the zone blocking schemes from last year? How will that work with these kids? Do they seem to have good feet and hands for the task? We got some backs who can run in a system like that? Or do we have any down hill runners? Against the schedule we have "down hill" may not mean what is should? Any HARD runners? I thought from last years thread many of the locals thought a little more run and less pass would have worked out in a few tight games?

I have heard that we will be using less "zone" blocking and getting back to pulling guards and tackles, angle and reach blocking....but I will believe it when I see it! At RB we are thin. Summers at TE/FB will be a load to tackle and he will be called upon to lead block for Zook. Zook has good speed, but has yet to survive a full season of football. After Zook, its REAL thin...maybe thats where the 2 freshman can help by giving Zook a few breaks. Hershberger (yes sanitizer...thats Tom Hersh's son) and the Domer boy(yes sanitizer...Kyle's son) are the 2 freshman I am thinking of.

Those are some names with some good genetics behind them. Zook has to find a way to stay healthy that has not happened yet for the boy.

Including when several desks were hurled at him while playing the "bad guy" during the filming of an ALICE training video.

I hear you Old Rider, Honestly LOLed in my office reading that. In no way in respect the the two mentioned aboves ability but to the connotatin of your comment. I have seen Hersh's kid at the gym a few times and he had definately put on some size this summer! I have never seen Kyle's boy in person, but Kyle sure didn't take up a lot of room in the huddle. He was crazy hard to get a good lick on. That is a BIG position to fill in at as a freshman, probably second only to QB on the offensive side of the ball. I think LB is a tough one on defense to start as a freshman.

If we have the hogs with the feet to get out and pull that may be a nice change of pace. I know the linemen I knew LOVED it when they got to pull and get out and run a little. If those freshman can be respectable enought to get those others a break it could work. They wouldn't have to set the world on fire just be a legitimate threat that can give the guys carrying the load a break.

Thanks for the information Old Rider!

EVERYONE has to stay healthy this year or it goes south in a hurry. It is also gonna take some confidence. These boys have not won a whole lot in football and if we can get off to a 2-1 or 3-0 start and get their confidence up then who knows what they may accomplish. However, we are an injury or two away from starting 1-2 or 0-3 and look out...that will be an 0-10 season! The younger kids (5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders) need to see a winning team on Friday nights. That helps to build confidence in the younger kids as well as increase interests in playing football, which we need badly!! As Sanitizer said, I remember going to the stadium on Friday and looking up to all the guys in that uniform like idols!!!

There is no doubt in my mind that this generation of kids could care less how good we were in the 70'' 80' 90'....they dont care and their parents don't teach them about what Orrville Football means. Look at a program like Coldwater...that town lives and breathes FOOTBALL. Thats all those boys know out there...football! From the time their born till they graduate there is an expectation to put on that same uniform that your father, brothers, uncles, and grandfathers wore! Its just the way it is there...which is how it USED TO BE here in Orrville!

5th and 6th grade flag football title game, we loose, take second in the league. Bill Rice and Kurby Shoup cried harder than we kids did! PASSION! Quote that always stuck with me as a youngster "Coach Rice look at all those marks on you... you must get hit a lot??? Nah kid, I don't get hit..... I HIT"! And I could tell by the look on his face he meant what he said! LOL!

Looks like we need to stay healthy this year. We get off to the right start and looks like a respecable opportunity for these young men. Old Rider you are so right about winning, its contagious and becomes a habbit!!!!

Auble is out, just may not play.

Those days are long gone brother! I don't even live there and can tell you there is not really a buzz about football anymore even 2 years ago when we were loaded there were plenty of empty seats on Friday nites at Red Rider Stadium-Sadly enough man most of these kids today don't appreciate those who put on that uniform before them and the tradition that was created-your name used to be a household name around here but I would be curious of How many of these kids know what you were about-nothing against you but the youth these days don't appreciate the ones that put the work in to get this program on the map! Guarantee most of them don't even know about Mo Tipton!
  • O-Trap
It's happening across the board, too. It seems like so many players don't realize the tradition involved.

I don't know this, but I'm willing to bet that, if you asked every Smithie player this year, less than half the team would recognize the name Larry Kolic.

And I said it somewhere (either here or the WCAL thread), but my brother, who was still playing in 2003, is sometimes asked by the players if the Smithies "were any good" back when he played. That will just be 10 years ago this year, and there is already that little known by the current crop.

As a fan, I would really like to see that become something that is ingrained into the teams. Part of being on the team should be knowing about the tradition ... something bigger than just this one team that they can take pride in.

Stopped by Fridays conditioning and was surprised to see Keontae there looks like he will be out, also heard Kevin Lyons is out (track kid senior, fast), probably will contribute as the season goes on, pretty athletic might help right away have to see how he transfers to football. 7 on 7 at Ashland tomorrow .

Good stuff. Tell them all to go get a friend for the next conditioning day.

Like I said last year...things HAVE changed. Glad we can agree.

Not sure of its just Orrville or not...but it is different for sure than what it was just a decade ago.

For what it's worth, I've never attended Orrville, and I know who Mo Tipton is.
