Division IV State Championship: Creston Norwayne def. Kenton, 48-42

Everyone thinks they have the answer, and they never get it done. 48 minutes is a LONG time for an offense like Kenton... Norwayne has the tools to beat Kenton, but actually beating them is a different story. But I hope the Norwayne D can STEP up and their O can KEEP up!
Good luck Bobcats!
Keep in mind... Kenton will not be the best team these kids have played against. Most the kids on this year's Norwayne team were also key factors on last year's team that played Ursuline. They won't be intimidated.
I see Calpreps has this game predicted as the following:
Norwayne (Creston, OH) vs. Kenton (OH) at Washington (Massillon, OH), 3:00pm [projection: Kenton (OH) 41-28]
I think 13 points is probably a pretty accurate prediction, based on both teams' successes this year. Kenton the obvious favorite (so double-digits does not surprise me), but Norwayne has proven they're a very good team, too, so less than a 2 TD spread sounds about right. For now. Hopefully the Bobcats can shock the world! Drew Pasteur (Fantastic50.net) has a higher pick percentage this year, and has done well with spreads, so I'm interested to see what his formula predicts later this week.
I disagree with the fact that Ursuline last year is better then Kenton this year. i saw both play and not much of a comparison. Kenton is the best team in Ohio period and divisions do not matter. -
wghfanThis was one of Mauk's nice runs. Listen to the guy commenting in the background of the video. Kind of funny.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fP1Bq_kr2OY&feature=related

Agree with that. They need someone much quicker but when running Mauk is unlike most quarterbacks, he delivers the blow rather than taking it.dontcare;991769 wrote:Wallace will not be able to catch Mauk.... -

I think Pasteur will have a similar spread. Kenton's strength of schedule was much tougher than Norwayne's - and that continued in the playoffs. Both teams blew out a common opponent (Wellington), but at totally different times of the year. BTW CalPreps/MaxPreps had Johnstown by 1 and Pasteur had them by 7 with a 67 percent chance to win against Norwayne.
I don't see either team shutting the other team down. Norwayne gave up plenty of yards to Girard and Johnstown, but they also got some key stops. They might need a few more against Kenton while maintaining the offensive efficiency. I haven't seen Kenton other than highlights/youtube - I just hope the bobcats have a few more athletes on both sides of the ball than Kenton's used to seeing. -

Orrville hung 53 on LaBrae in the playoffs. D5-R19 is not D4-R13. Orrville would beat Wynford and the Royals are an excellent team. Region 19, when compared to the other D5 regions was the weakest. The Kirtland game is a great example of that.Mr. Russell;991935 wrote: Wynford would have beat any team in the area this year and Orrville was not hanging 40 on anybody.
Kenton can probably throw on just about everybody. The Hillsdale & Smithville games were played in mud, which hurt all aspects of the passing game immensely. Saturday will be on turf.Mr. Russell;991935 wrote: if Hillsdale could successfully throw the ball on Norwayne, Kenton will be able to. -

Obviously you havent seen them play. Curious to see what you post after the game. They have the nations best QB and a very potent offense. NOBODY will stop them. -

You are a bit of a whiner! I have been pulling for Norwayne since they beat Orrville. This week wont be different but what will be is the outcome! -

I actually have, and Kenton is very good. However, Kenton is not the best team in the state, regardless of division as you posted.
I don't think they could win the state title in Division 1. I don't think they would even win a regional championship in D1.
Ignatius, Whitmer, Pick Central & St.X would all roll over Kenton.
Divisions do matter, that's why we have them. That's also why these two teams are still playing.(IMO)

No need for suspense.
I'll congratulate the winner and tell the loser they had a great season. All of which will be true. -
thePITmanRingz, Big Falcon, etc... if we want to sit together, we need to try to get our ticket at the same time. With state finals being reserved seats, if we buy all our tickets separately, who knows where we'll end up. Want to count up how many we need and have someone get them for all of us?

beatobamaFor whatever it's worth, Rivals.com has Mauk rated as the second best QB in Ohio behind O'Conner from Lima Central Catholic (Mich. State) and 20th in the nation. His numbers are out of this world though. I've underestimated the Bobcats all along, so I will continue to do so in hopes they continue to prove me wrong again. This one may be extremely high scoring, but I think the Cats may want to slow this one down an run a lot of clock and be sure to put points on the board.

I kind of don't understand the first part of this statement, as many are saying it when talking about facing Kenton. "You need to hold on to the ball a lot". If you ask me, do whatever your best plays are so you can score. If you change your offensive game plan to adjust for the opposing defense, then OK. But if you adjust your offensive game plan because of the opponent's offense, that's just being scared. Just my opinion. Obviously Kenton is awesome, but eventually someone's defense will have to stop the other's offense. Norwayne has to do what they think puts them in the best situation to score points, and then hope they are the team that stops the other.beatobama;992193 wrote:I think the Cats may want to slow this one down an run a lot of clock and be sure to put points on the board.
This should be a super fun game to watch! The Bobcats have their hands full and are heavy underdogs, but I'm rooting for a big upset! Good luck Norwayne! -
beatobamaI guess when you are playing against a qb that has nearly 70 td passes, and you have the ability to control the clock it may be wise to play a little keep away. norwayne has been successful running the ball and throwing the ball. I would still keep it pretty balanced if possible, but if I could run on night long, I would. From film I have seen, Norwayne needs to defend the entire field and not give up on plays. I saw a lot of db's that gave up on plays because they aren'y used to a qb who can throw the ball as far as Mauk and then they are beat because the receiver keeps running.

I agree and understand that viewpoint. My point, playing the devil's advocate, I guess, was asking what if adjusting the offense to run more clock got you out of the rhythm your offense normally gets into, and drives end up stalling when a more open, natural offense for a team like Norwayne may have been more potent? Anything that Norwayne does to its offense to change it, changing anything they've done the last few games, would be a mistake, IMO. At some point you have to say "Our offense is pretty good, and we think we can put up points" and put some faith in the defense to at least get a FEW stops. Nobody is going to shut down or "contain" Kenton, but a stop here or there, maybe a turnover, and another perfect night for Norwayne's offense, and we might be looking at an upset. Just my opinion.beatobama;992233 wrote:I guess when you are playing against a qb that has nearly 70 td passes, and you have the ability to control the clock it may be wise to play a little keep away. -
riders1Against a pretty good defending state champion team, Col. Hartley, Mauk's offense was only on the field for 12 minutes and 10 seconds and were held to 30 points !

Sounds like a plan. I will get a count for you in a day or two. Would be good to get tickets with the Bobcat Fans and not out with the normal crowd, they may not appreciate the bell. Of course not sure the Bobcat in front of me last week did either.thePITman;992190 wrote:Ringz, Big Falcon, etc... if we want to sit together, we need to try to get our ticket at the same time. A co-worker is a Norwayne fan and having someone get tickets for him on Wednesday. If we can know by Wednesday, I can have him get our tickets, then pay him back, and everyone can pay me back.Go Falcons;992300 wrote:Sounds like a plan. I will get a count for you in a day or two. beatobamaExactly my point. 30 points is a lot for just over a quarter of having the ball. Norwaynes staff has done a pretty good job adjusting to teams they have played in the post season, so I'll be curious to see how they adjust this week. If stats I saw are correct Kenton punted once in that time frame of having the ball, so they scored rather quickly when they did have the ball. I think the Cats have a good enough running game to control the clock and mix some shots in there as well. I would look at establishing the run, with an occassional home run ball, mixing in some screens to #26 and #5 on the perimeter and hope they can break one. Obviously, Norwayne has some firepower, but I don't think they have yet to encounter anyhting like Mauk and Co. Just my opinion, but Mauk cannot score without the ball.

TigerplantI think the same analysis applies here as the past few games concerning Kenton's opponent. Anytime you have some of your best performers playing both ways against Kenton's offense you will see Kenton pull away in the 3rd quarter. This is what beat Hartley....their great running back was Mauk's spy on defense and by the end of the 3rd quarter he could barely get off the ground when he was tackeld. The good thing for Norwayne is Maty is not 100% right now and my advice is to not try to get in his head.....if you make this kid mad he will burn you bad!!
