[h=1]Norwayne coaching staff brings Stark connection to Div. IV title game[/h]Jim Thomas
    [email protected]
    Updated: Friday, December 2, 2011

n The coaching staff of the Norwayne High School football team, which will be playing in Saturday’s Division IV state final, includes (front) head coach Joe Harbour, (back row, from left) Jeff Daso, Adam Indorf, Bob Young, Vinnie Sette and Jude LaChance.

CRESTON Northwest head football coach Vic Whiting nervously will be prowling the sidelines at Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium prior to Saturday’s 3 p.m. kickoff for the Division IV state football championship game.

Whiting’s Indians aren’t playing. But three of his former assistant coaches — Joe Harbour, Vinnie Sette and Jude LaChance — will be involved in the game of their lives when their Norwayne Bobcats meet unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Kenton.

“Those are my guys,” Whiting said of head coach Harbour and offensive coaches Sette and LaChance. “I’m pretty proud of them.”

Another Norwayne assistant, defensive coordinator Adam Indorf, played at Dalton High School and the University of Mount Union and was an assistant at St. Thomas Aquinas for two seasons.

Harbour is the guy steering the ship. In just his third year as the Bobcats’ lead man, he has taken them to the school’s first playoff appearances the past two seasons. They shared the Wayne County Athletic League title in 2011, and have won a school-record 13 games.

Now Harbour has the Bobcats in the school’s first-ever state title game in any sport.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” said Harbour, who left Northwest after five seasons as a line coach. “These kids are the one who deserve the credit. You know it’s something special what they’ve done.”

Harbour says he’s not the reason for the team’s mega success. He quickly notes his predecessor, Kevin Maltarich, laid the groundwork. The Norwayne youth football program and community involvement are factors, too, he said.

“I walked into a great situation,” he said, “and we’ve been able to keep it going. We just took it to the next level.”

Harbour credits Whiting and Indians assistants Gary Dial and John Tanksley, along with his college coach Bob Packard of Baldwin-Wallace, for preparing him to be a head coach.

“Vic has been a huge influence,” Harbour said. “We went to the playoffs every year, the Final Four once. I’ve always said it was a great school to coach at.”

And last but far from least, Harbour recognizes the part Sette, LaChance, Indorf, Bob Young and Jeff Daso have played as his assistants.

“I let them run with it,” Harbour said of the play-calling duties on both sides of the ball. “All I have is veto power. They’ve done a great job.”

LaChance, Whiting’s quarterbacks coach and a former Malone University defensive back, is the offensive coordinator. Yet he and Sette, a 2004 Northwest graduate, share the play-calling responsibilities.

Whatever they have dialed up has clicked this season. Norwayne has scored a school- and league-record 638 points, a 45.6 average.

“We think alike so much it’s not even funny,” Sette said of LaChance. “We just click together. Jude is just amazing. It’s like a chess match for us. We try and think ahead. But he sees everything, and beyond.”

“Jude did a fantastic job for me,” Whiting said. “He’s very offensively sharp. He works with the kids well. So does Vinnie. My kids really liked them.”

Indorf really likes them, too, especially coaching under Harbour. He was a defensive line coach at the College of Wooster before Harbour came calling.

“What I like is he allows us to handle the defensive calls, and we all work together,” Indorf said. “We try to develop the best strategy, but it’s still all about the kids.”

Whiting said how much he hated losing Sette, LaChance and Harbor off his staff. He didn’t like that they had to go.

“The levy was the problem,” Whiting said of the school’s failure to pass levies before doing so this year. “That’s why we lost them.”

Whiting and his current staff have been following Norwayne’s tournament run with interest. They will be there watching the Bobcats — clad in Northwest’s scarlet and gray — go for the big prize.

“We’ve been to their last three games as a staff,” he said. “We’re pretty hooked into them.

“Joe has done a great job of putting a coaching staff together — and using them in the right places.”

Just passed the football team busses heading to Massillion on my way to the office this Friday morning. They imagin they are going early to practice and get a good nights rest. Rest well Wildcats so you can whip those Bobcats in a real cat fight.

Ok so myself and Kenton fans have been pretty quiet on here and not too "proud" of our team but yet it seems as though all you fans of Norwayne want to keep saying that we are a..'s. I don't get it, we are not allowed to be confident and proud? I can assure you that we aren't concentrating on any little crap like whether or not a bell is at the game.....we are concentrating on laying the wood on defense and burning the light bulbs out on the scoreboard. I had dinner with three of the Kenton players last night and these boys have the fire in their eye! They have heard all week and have it posted in their locker room...."Norwayne's QB is just as good as Maty and we expect him to have a better game than Maty". Wrong move Norwayne fans........hasn't your momma ever taught you to not stir a behive? The last team to doubt Kenton's talents had 9 touchdowns and 505 yards put on them is less than 3 quarters of football. The boys are chomping at the bit for their chance at this one. I have one piece of advice for your boys.....tell them to strap that bucket on their head real tight because the train is coming to town!

"It's just the system he plays in. When you throw it 70 times a game, you're going to put up those numbers. It'll come down to who plays better on Saturday. Its pretty much an even match-up" -Norwaynes head coach Harbour in today's paper.....fuel the fire!

That's all Maty needed folks............Done Deal!

wow - you Kenton folks are ultra sensitive. If you are turning that quote into bulletin board material, you are really stretching things. He was nothing but complimentary in that article towards Mauk and Kenton.

You can find bulletin board material for every team for every game. Nothing new there.

    Go Bobcats!

Tigerplant: I think that all the Cat fans on here have been pretty reasonable. Things on the other site have been a little more rousing and some of that has carried over to here. You have every right to be proud and confident and your team has earned the respect of all of us, weather we are willing to admit it or not. The kids are focused all week at practice prepping for this game, while we the armchair quarterbacks have nothing to do but talk smack. I hope you have not been offended. During the regular season we go at each other a lot worse, and now we have all turned on one common foe.
We all hope for a good, safe game on Saturday and may the best Cats win. We all know which one that is!:D

Don't think I will make it, but I will be there tomorrow. Tonight is Creston's night to celebrate as a family. Because no matter the outcome tomorrow your team and community should be nothing but proud. The rest of the area thanks you for taking us along for the ride. Enjoy it my friend because the rest of the WCAL has other plans for you next year!:D

No need to disparage the bell - it's a symbol of the bond of the WCAL and our county.

I have not read a single post on here from a member who is from the Norwayne community say anything negative about the Kenton team and barely a negative thing from one of our outside community supporters either! Stop reading into things so much and twisting words to fit your need "Tigerplant". If you need to turn your boys into bullies by doing such nonsense to get them fired up to win games so be it, but don't expect us to lower ourselves to your level. I am proud to be a Bobcat and proud to be a member of this community and when all is said and done, regardless of the outcome, we will hold our heads high knowing we are winners on and OFF the field.
Go Bobcats! 1 Heart. 1 Soul. 1 TEAM.

Ps. Good article from Fox Sports Ohio...

He is the best quarterback we have seen all year,” Harbour said of Mauk. “There is no doubt about that. Part of that is the system he plays in. When you throw 70 times a game you will put up numbers, but having said that, he is a good quarterback. He can pass and he is a darn good runner. He keeps a lot of plays alive by scrambling and he is a good pocket passer when he gets time.”

Hey "Tiger" - you obviously "planted" that quote out of context

I don't know who Tigerplant is but he seems like a jerk and not a true Kenton fan. Just another stir stick. Please don't think all Kenton fans are all like him. We respect the Game and ALL the players.

I precict with 100% confidence that the "CATS" will win.

    See you'al @ the game.

"Norwayne's QB is just as good as Maty and we expect him to have a better game than Mauk."

What knucklehead said that? Heck, I'm a WCAL fan, and no offense to Wallace, but Mauk is the best QB in the state.

I can't see a single Norwayne or WCAL fan posting that. If someone did, I'm betting they have just a couple posts and suddenly popped up as a Norwayne fan just for this game.

Could you imagine what the stadium would be like if Norwayne won?

This should be a great high scoring game. My gut is telling me this one will be going to OT.
