Struthers Football 2012

    I disagree.

    Asher resigns. Who's next?
  • BTrev
Was it on the news or something?

Good luck to Coach Asher... with whatever he wants to do next. I'll leave it at that.

Eric Ungaro is the first name that came to mind. He was interested in the job last year. He's been the DC at Howland for a long long time. He's had a lot of success... he's coached multiple D2 Defensive POTY (Doug Datish and Cody Reeseman)... and who knows how many All Conference and All State selections. Unlike Asher, he's very familiar with all of the AAC Red teams too, including Howland and Struthers... except Hubbard. And he's had a lot of success against Poland, Canfield, Niles, and Lakeview over the years.

When the hunt for a coach was going on last year, I had Asher and Ungaro as 1A and 1B.

He'd be my top choice. It's worth a shot to call and see if he's still interested.

Sometimes your own left hand, forces your right hand to do things that get you in trouble. Then your right hand has to sign away....

I here a play is being made for WGH

    Moving on...

Anyone have an opinion of Mr. Ungaro? Good coach? Bad coach? Good fit? Bad fit?

Anyone can feel free to chime in...
  • soupcitysoldier
nice guy met him while he was campaigning and actually tried helping me find a job...
  • BTrev
I did see that he ran for political office a few years back, although I don't remember what he ran for or anything. I do know his Dad is a former Mayor of Youngstown.

Ungaro that name brings back memories. Just hearing the name Ungaro rings Pat Ungaro. He helped my Family out once in the past. As far as his son as a coach? Im not sure.

Wow post 666?? No way dude Just a bump to go 667,...

Ungari should of got the job last year, don't mess this up again. BOE
  • BTrev
    All AAC White

    Dave Stewart
    Dylan Duchek
    Vinny Fandozzi
    Christian Walker

It didn't say what positions they were selected for, but I'm guessing the following...

    Stewart RB
    Duchek DB
    Dozzi TE
    Walker LB

Duchek also made 2nd team All NEO Inland as a DB.

Struthers had no 1st team selections, which is understandable. Duchek was the only 2nd team selection, and the only player honored from Struthers. I thought Walker deserved at least an Honorable Mention.

Anyone know anything about the coaching search? I'm hoping that they get the right guy in there before Christmas. Above all else though, the BOE needs to find the right guy. Ungaro has to be the front runner, if he wants the job.

It just makes too much sense!

Spread is right. In hind sight, Ungaro probably would've been the better option last year. It could've been worse though...

That depends on if he's even interested this time around. He may have felt screwed.
  • Ohio
Shaffer would have most likely been a first team selection but his off field troubles took everything away from him
  • BTrev
Yep. He definitely would've made All AAC, and he probably would've been at least 2nd team All NEO Inland.

Shaffer only has himself to blame though.

Word is flying big time in Trumbull County... Hake is the new Struthers coach... Anyone else hear this one?
  • BTrev
    I didn't see that coming...

Don't really know much about the guy, just that he wins.

WR has had a hell of a season so far. It'd be nice to see them go all the way.

Maybe they'll introduce him at the Gridiron Club's sausage meeting thing that they do around this time of year.

I know the Niles faithful really wanted him.

    Lastly...

I'm interested to see how he fairs against D2 and D3 competition. As far as I know, he's only coached against D5 and D6 competition.

I'll work my Google magic when I get home later. If anyone has any info, or articles, or anything about Mr. Hake, please share.

If it proves true, this is good news...

    :)

Seriously though, if he's really looking for a new gig while his team is still makin a run in the playoffs then that's pretty low in my eyes. Wait til the seasons over at least if you're indeed gonna bail on your team.
  • BTrev
    Not low class at all...

It isn't like he'd leave WR hanging, and just pack it in and bail on them now.

I doubt very seriously that anything will be made official until after WR's run is over... which I hope isn't for another 2 weeks.

Right now... all we have to go on is the post above. Nothing is set in stone or anything.

This is what I was able to gather about Andrew Hake...

    31 years old
    12 years coaching experience
31-4 in 3 years as Head Coach at Western Reserve
3 straight playoff appearances at WR
His Dad, Russ Hake, is a coaching legend in Trumbull County

Maybe he didn't apply. Maybe someone from Struthers approached him about the job, and he said yes... but wait until after the season.

Maybe he did apply... and they told him that he got the job, but they'd wait to make it official.

Maybe all the rumors are false.

Who knows what the deal is... if there even is a deal.

The only thing that's certain is that Coach Hake would be very welcome in Struthers... if he does indeed decide he wants the job.
  • BTrev
To shed some light on things...

Ungaro is out of the picture. He's some kind of trustee or something in Poland now. Cross him off the list.

IMO, all signs point to Hake. The BOE and Superintendent will obviously wait to make it official until Western Reserve's playoff run is over, but I do believe it's just a matter of time before he's named the Head Coach at Struthers. I don't even know if they've gotten all the formalities out of the way. It's one thing to apply for the job when your team is in the middle of a playoff run... it's another thing to interview for the job when you're in the middle of a playoff run.

Take it for what you want, but I've heard through the coaching grapevine that Hake did apply, and it's all but official that he'll be the new HC.

Best wishes to Western Reserve. Beat Buckeye Central!
  • omemorialhigh
my opinion....good hire for struthers, but i do feel its in poor taste on hakes part to interview, apply, etc during a playoff run. actually what is in poor taste is letting this leak out, and whoever did it should know better. we cant preach loyalty, pride, dedication to our kids and then in the same breath do the complete opposite behind our kids backs. my opinion. i think if it was a struthers coach doing the same thing im sure the faithful would be upset.
  • Diet Coke
First off, my sources tell me there is no deal nor is it all but offical that Hake is the next HC at Struthers. While it may be wishful thinking on some
diehard Wildcat fans, I doubt if anyone "in" the hiring process has "contacted" him . I don't think he has even sent a resume.

Second off, the job posting has a 10 day window and the closing date has not expired.I have been told that no one has yet been interviewd for the position.

Third, the coaching grapeline is based on rumors and speculations.
Yes, some people in the coaching circle have speculated that Hake MAY be itching to move up to a bigger school, but that's just it,a speculation.Every year coaches
who experience successful seasons have their names come up that they may be leaving for a new job.

It rumors and speculations were true,Micky Sikora would be entering his second season or third season as head coach of Struthers
    in 2012.

If you are one that wishes the Struthers program to be successful, you
should not post information that all signs point to Hake or any other coach for that matter. When you do post information that a certain coach
has already been "chosen" before the job posting expires, how many other quality coaches may not decide to apply if they get wind that the job has already been
    promised to any individual?

I was told that their were very few applicants for the position last year, because the rumor out there was that Sikora was either a lock
for the job or had already been offered the job before the posting expired.A number of candidates didn't bother to apply.

By announcing that Hake has already been contacted or has been promised the job once again may diminish the candidate pool.

Since last month, Sikora has been mention as the next head coach, then Ungaro, and now Hake. While these coaches may be on one's wish list,
they shouldn't be ordained that the job has already been given to them. That's far from the case.
  • BTrev
That's why I said, take it for what you want. I feel like I can put some stock in my source... but it's far from set in stone. My posts above are just speculation and my opinions. Take it or leave it...

Wishful thinking? You bet! When is the last time that Struthers had a proven winner at HC not named Zetts or Pirone?

Was I a bit overzealous? Yeah. My bad.

I never once said that Ungaro was going to get the job. I just put the idea out there that he'd be a possibility. He was interested in the job last year, and probably would've been the better option over Asher. It made sense to think that he'd be interested again this year.

I was informed that Asher was interested, and had a pretty good shot at getting the job, last December... shortly after Saunders resigned. It wasn't posted on JJHuddle that Sikora was coming back last year. I didn't join this site until July, so I don't know what went on before I got here. As long as Sikora and Zetts are coaching, there is always going to be speculation and rumors that they're both coming home... whether there's an opening or not. 2nd or 3rd year? Sikora should be entering his 8th year as HC.

As for Hake, I didn't put the idea out there... but I did run with it. That's somewhat on me. I have heard from people who are in contact with the staff in WR though, and Hake did apply and is interested. That's all I know. I shouldn't have implied that he was a lock. IMO though, he needs to be near or at the top of the BOE's list.

When was the job posted? I didn't think any interviews had taken place yet.

Since you seem to be in the loop, do you know if/when any interviews are scheduled? Any indication of when the new HC will be named?

Also... weren't there 13 applicants for the position last year? I'll do some digging for the article, but I could swear that I read that they had a decent number of applicants, 12+. Maybe I'm incorrect...
  • BTrev
“Struthers Superintendent Robert Rostan said that 13 applications were received and that Asher was among six who got interviews.”
