The *UNOFFICIAL* Massillon 2012 Thread

  • skank
Massillon enters the 2012 season with a refurbished schedule, a bevy of talent, and a goal to get back to the playoffs after missing the 2011 tournament by 10 seconds, (and an inadvertant whistle). They return 6 regular starters on offense, and 6 regular starters on defense, both kickers, a punter and all three quarterbacks. I expect the offense will remain about the same, (multiple), running everything from the I formation, to the spread, and about everything in between. Thom McDanials play calling was somewhat vanilla in '11, mainly due to some inexperienced skill players. It never helps when you lose two kids like Olack and Smith (graduation), DeVonte Oliver, 6'3" 280lb starting LT, (adopted them moved), and Mykal Mayle, starting gaurd, (ineligibility). Massillons defense really improved from '10 to '11, becoming more agressive, using different stunts and blitzing from everywhere on the field, (something they didn't do under the watch of Steve Kovacs, our previous D coordinator). Replacing both DE's and a DT will be high on Hall and Durbins list.

    #81 Matt Steiner 5'8" 135 DB/WR/Ath.

A Very talented freshman class that I truly believe will produce some contributors for next year.

    #51 Mason Hackenbracht OL
    #77 Nick Bushman OL/DL
    #84 Everett Edwards TE/WR
    #85 Blake Manson LB

Massillon returns all of their production at the QB position from 2011 in Kempt, Tonn and Brown. 110 of 194 for 1467 yards 17 TD's and 5 Int's. But more important than returning those numbers, is the fact that the QB's really took care of the ball last year, made good decisions, and produced despite the fact that everyone around them/him was very inexperienced.

Massillon also returns 203 of 262 carries, 1,108 of 1,479 rushing yards and 15 of 20 rushing TD's

The recieving core, for the second year in a row, graduates their top two recievers, but does return what I believe will be better overall athletes in '12, they will return 42 catches, 360 yards & 4 TD's. Leading the way in terms of returnees, is Ernie Baez, but expect to see, Tonn, Conley, Rambo, Whitfield, Dailey, Damion Smith, Dudley, and Huffman all in the mix to be starting recievers.

Defensively, Massillon will return 141 solo tackles, 156 assisted tackles, 7 sacks, 26 tackles for loss, 8 interceptions and 7 fumble recoveries.

That was an instant classic, I actually forgot about that, thanks for reminding me. I wonder how many mysteries that dude has solved since then, I bet it's in the thousands.

Just noticed that Marion Harding is on your schedule also. Fitch is going out their way Week 8. Are they a football independent too?

    Strongly Agree.

This may not mean much coming from an outsider, but IMO, if Massillon wants more production in the passing game, Taylor needs to be in the back field!

One thing I will mention that I noticed on Saturday (my 2nd time seeing Massillon play this year) is that both QB's Massillon had in did NOT throw the ball! There was one real throw the whole game, and it was a big conversion late in the game. All the other passes were lobs. There were many, many times that if the QB had actually thrown the ball hard instead of a literal lob, that the receiver would have been open and easily caught the pass. But just about every pass, even the short hitches, slants, and curls were all lobbed in. Have the Massillon QB's been lobbing passes all year? Are they afraid to let it loose? Or was Saturday an off day?

I think with that schedule you wouldnt have to worry about going 7-3 and missing the playoffs. Much improved

He probably won't see much PT at RB next year either, we have Ryne Moore back and will be bringing up a kid by the name of Jason Boykins who's also a pretty good running back, hopefully by next year he'll be around 6'0" and around 200 LBS.

This by no means is a jab, bad comment ETC but I beleive being a D1 school don't play Big Red or and D3 school at that and replace with another D1 school because the points could be the difference between missing the playoffs and hosting a playoff game. Just my thoughts.

I can see your point, but playing Steubenville, who could beat a lot of DI teams will garner you more points than playing a DI that finishes 3-7, 4-6 or 5-5.

weeks 5 and 7 are the only open dates? I hope you got room for the Red and we have room on ours .. shoot that is one game I love to see... BTW I listened to the McKinley game on the radio and it kept breaking up .. It came in perfect and then nothing then right back on .. I thought Massillon had it in the 4th .. I missed the long pass ply for McK .. You guys had that game .. Very good game as usual ... I hope you guys kill Valdosta if you play them .. i might go to that game and support Ohio

absolutely .. look at our points .. We would be 1st in 3 of the D-1 regions this year if not all of them

My bad I was not totally clear. I was thinking someone that has a chance for 7-3 or better. Thinking someone like Boardman, Glenville, Sylvania southview, Toledo Whitmer ... someone along those lines. I do enjoy the "renewed rivalry" between Massillon and Big Red.

Moore runs hard but is slow. The last 2 games he was shut down. Hall should have kept the rotation with Winters, Taylor, and Moore going. Maybe a new rotation with Boykins?

To an extent, I agree. He's not as fast as say a Winters, but he's pretty quick. He's like a little jitter bug. My problem with him is he doesn't seem to have that tackle breaking ability, I mean, he falls forward when tackled to get that extra yard or two, but he seems to go down on first contact too much. Boykins, in my opinion, will bring a lot to the table next year. I wouldn't be surprised to see Damion Smith play a little RB next year also.
  • football77
What I will give to Moore is that he does not stop moving his little legs and he's not afraid to be hit. But Massillon's featured back? NO! Run the quicker, bigger backs to wear the defense down.

I think Trelly and Alex played such big roles on defense, that Hall didn't want to wear them down. I'm not a big believer in that philosophy, but that's what I think his thinking was. I miss the days when your studs rarely left the field. Sure, you have to give them a break now and then, a series here and a series there, but there is no excuse for a kid like Winters to go GAMES, not quarters, but GAMES between carries.
  • football77
Wear them down? Those kids are out there to play football. Both kids should have never went games with no carries. 50 plus yards against Big Red? Not playing outside of Moore cost us big games.

Nope...wrong. You would be first in Region 1 and Region 3. Please stop talking now.

LOL...and that is supposed to be some kind of point??

Big Red, and the supposed "easy schedule", would be 1st in 2 of the 4 D1 regions. And this is a schedule that had some teams have really down years. EL was a playoff team last year and only won one game. If they would have had a normal season then Big Red would have had more points than anyone. There was also a Brooke team that only won 4 games, and they had won 10+ the last two years. And Ursuline who only won 4 games. And O'Hara who only won one game, who in the recent past was going undefeated. All of that and Big Red still accumulated that many points.
