Week 4: Campbell Memorial (3-0) at Brookfield (3-0)

OhioLol. A players dad joins the action

Spread All DayBrookfield's OL and DL's definitely controlled the line of scrimmage. I don't see how anyone can say Campbell was the better team. Maybe Campbell should of kneeled it, but they didn't. Maybe if the starting Q for the warriors wasn't hurt it wouldn't of been that close. But we'll never know. They did go into an OT period and the warriors stopped them then too. Give credit where credit is due. Campbell SHOULD rebound though, but maybe the bad taste in their mouths will linger. As for the warriors, I can honestly see them winning out if the back up Q progresses a little bit more.

I agree with you that Brookfield won the battle up front. Campbell did make an adjustment at halftime and shut down the Brookfield running game for most of the second half. We can all say maybe this or maybe that, what if this or what if that. The fact is this was far from a perfectly played game by both teams, a physical game filled with mistakes by both teams. This game was officiated by what seemed to be an inexperienced crew. They very nearly lost control of the game. Campbell dropped one, possibly two touchdown passes. And one of their receivers was stripped of the ball as he carried it into the red zone like a loaf of bread instead of tucking it in. Everyone knows that Campbell would have won this game if they had lined up in victory formation and taken a knee with one minute left. It was first down, Brookfield had just one time out remaining. Campbell could have ran the clock out. Everyone is puzzled why this was not done. It's football 101. I am very interested as to what the answer is going to be when the question is posed at the meeting on Monday night. Finally, as a Campbell fan of over 30 years, I have seen hundreds of Campbell games. I make no excuses for the few players who chose to leave the field without shaking hands with the Brookfield players. Trust me, if Campbell had won the game, those same few players would have been the first in line to shake hands. There is no excuse for it. Win like a champion. Lose like a champion. Show good sportsmanship win or lose. This showed a lack of character, a lack of respect, and gave Campbell Memorial some publicity it does not need.Spread All Day;900849 wrote:Brookfield's OL and DL's definitely controlled the line of scrimmage. Dean you right. lets just get over it. there might be a good reason for what happen at the end. we all know what and who won the game. but if it was meant to be it would have been. I'm bothered by it. very bother by it to be honest. But i have not a clue who made the call or if it was a miscommunication. Hell the players could have got the wrong call. Thats what I'm hoping what happen. Cause i just cant see all this experience making a bad call like that. It don't make sense. and saying Campbell was shut down the whole game is crazy. I didn't have to be there to know Campbell killed there selfs. They had many chances and did not execute. There was a play that the announcers said was a catch and clearly after the catch he gaind 5 yards went down and lost the ball but they said his knee clearly was down before the ball was stripped. Well guess what they said the refs called it a incomplete pass. that would have gave Campbell a first down. they talked about it for almost the whole 4th qt. Its bothering me cause i was truly thinking this team had it. they do and people need to stop saying they don't. but the one thing they don't have to make them great is character and good sportsmanship. i hate to say this and i really do. But some of these players don't deserve to ware a devils uniform. the integrate that i remember is gone. and the whole we are Devils is a joke to most of the kids. I'm not saying that the whole team is like that. but there is some real issues with this team that just will not get fixed to have a successful season. its been getting worse each week with some of the players acting up. I don't know what to think anymore. I'm very disappointed in the team and who ever made the call to hand off. I would like to think it was a miss communication.BigDean1;900980 wrote:I agree with you that Brookfield won the battle up front. cmhs_prideBiggary1970,
Listen, 90% of the Campbell chatters and fans tip their hats to an outstanding team in Brookfield. I know the kind of players you have trust me. I train three of them who are now in college. I thought the Oline did a fantastic job. And I think the backup could be the starter.
Couple things. And this is a fact. One, Campbell did shut Brookfield down in the second half. Their offense did not score a TD. You cannot deny that. Two, a mistake in coaching put the nail in the coffin. But credit Brookfield for not laying down and dying. I tip my hats to them.
Now, the players who walked off the field without a handshake.... Have you read our posts? Do you know how irritated we are right now with that. I don't think they should play next week period. As for the staff allowing it.... THEY DID NOT ALLOW IT. Two coaches went after them yelling at them. I don't know what happened after that. Very unsportsmanlike. Trust me I am beyond pissed at that representation of my town. But let me tell you this, if you think it was ok for your two players to come on a website and run their mouth... Well then that tells me something about you my friend. Win or lose that was classless. At age 16 you shut your mouth and handle your business. They got the second part right. They handled their business and got the W. As for the first part..... Classless. Period.
I see Brookfield winning out at this pace. Great team. I wish them the best of luck. As for 54 and 75.... You two handle your own. I watched you. Do it with your body and mind gentlemen.... Not your mouth. Good luck to you both and the Warriors in 2011. -
OhioGreat post hats off to that

reddevil90I give all the credit to the Brookfield warriors. They never gave up even though the game by all purposes was over. It was said on the radio that Campbell was celebrating on the sidelines with a over a minute left. and they said this game is far from over cause the way the whole game went so far nothing was certain and over. But they said that it should be over with a few knees. I cant tell you how sick i was after the fumble. But what ticks me off is how i defended these kids all up to this point and i was told that this group had extreme amount of talent but also had a nickname for a reason. They are called the Knucklehead's. And I'm done defending them. i hope they don't play this week and i don't care if this cost us the season. But they don't deserve what so ever to put on a Campbell uniform. they are not representing what i believe and sure as hell are not representing our devils players of the past. I feel that these individuals are selfish and don't care for nothing but face time. and also the coaches need to take responsibility for this team and there calls on the field. and this week they have a lot to explain not just with the fumble instead of a knee. But why there was a diff long snapper for such a big game. And why talk about this big playbook you supposedly got but kept running the same plays over and over. and not coming out in the second half with a new game plan. and how in the hell do you get back to back delay of game calls and did not run a play yet? do they really think that Ja'les is the only way to win? hell a blind man can tell you that we have players that can do just as much damage as Ja'les. I'm very disappointed in a few players. I'm worried about the calls that have been sent into the huddle. I'm worried about this turning out to be a reincarnation of 1994. Hats off to Brookfield for being a complete team.
Just so you know i was also told that that Brookfield was throwing racial slurs at the team during plays. Regardless of the fact if it happened or didn't. You walk away and you have a chance to lay a thump on him to shut him up. thats the beauty of football. hitting someone is encouraged. hit them so hard you knock fear into there soul! I know also for a fact that many Campbell teams and so have other Youngstown area teams have dealt with this crap form many many years. even the great teams in the 40's 50's 80's 90's and also 2010's!!! No excuse!!! -
OhioDont bash the coaches play calling when they are the reason for any success the last few years they know what theyvarw doing.

sooner1It looks like the players are running the team!!

Struthers FanJust my opinion.
The great Campbell tradition is back. The winning is back. The fans are back. The talent is ALWAYS there. The coaching has a lot to do with this great reformation.
Missing ingredient: Discipline, on the part of the players. And the fear factor from the past. Not because they were our "archrival", but Campbell automatically invoked fear when we played them and against all their opponents. It was more than just the stadium and fans. The team was downright intimidating. 50's, 60's through the 70's. Scary as hell. Most old-time Struthers fans like myself will echo my sentiments. This was all sports too. The year our girls won the state basketball championship, our only loss all year........@ Campbell Memorial.
I personally am always for Campbell except when they play Struthers. I remember their losing years. Especially the 43-game stretch. Loved it when they broke the streak against 'boardman'.
Like I said, just my opinion.
Good luck against LaBrae. Go Devils! -
omemorialhighgreat post struthers fan...great post...you sum up what us old timers feel, but you are on the outside looking in. so its good knowing were not crazy lol
-
sonnyblackAfter listening to the coach's reason why they made that decision, i understand what they were thinking, but I still don't agree with it. Anyway, its over and done with, there's alot of behind the scene stuff this staff has to deal with that most don't know. i was heated after what happened too, but coach is a good guy and we are lucky to have him running our program. He said we'll see how this group reacts to adversity, friday is HUGE!

No.......we're not crazy YET. Somehow through those years of losing, people forgot all the tradition. God I miss those days. As a young kid, we hitched a ride to Memorial for the final game of 67. We're 9-0 and CM is 4-5. We losing 6-0 at the half, but pulled it out 12-6. Records didn't matter in that game. Zetts was the junior QB. What a player and team. Easy 10,000 fans at Memorial. Packed, loud as hell.omemorialhigh;903601 wrote:great post struthers fan...great post...you sum up what us old timers feel, but you are on the outside looking in. so its good knowing were not crazy lol
Somehow, these stories didn't get passed down too well. The young kids don't know the tradition. What a shame.
Anyway, I'm glad Campbell's back. Your fans have suffered long enough.
Best of luck against LaBrae!

omemorialhighstruthers fan, a guy recently told me zetts senior year campbell at struthers that neil diamond played at halftime? is that true? campbell led at half and got stuffed on the goalline?

Gardens35Along the same lines.......
A few years back a retired Head Coach (who won 1 state championship, and was state runner-up 1 time) was reminiscing a bit and said "You could beat Campbell 34-0 on a Friday Night, and not have enough healthy players to practice the next Monday afternoon." (paraphrase) -

Are you referring to that stretch in the mid-70's? -
Struthers FanI was at the game. Don't remember anything like that. Surely would've remembered something like that.
Back in those days, YSU would have concerts at the fieldhouse over spring break. All the old stuff. Fifth Dimension, as well as Ike & Tina Turner. There were others; just can't remember. -

Tough times for Campbell during that stretch.

cmhs_prideStruthers Fan, thank you for your kind words. I preach every year that these younger ones today couldn't even begin to understand. Although it seems to be gaining a spark once again. Of course I am speaking of the rivalry.

Last year brought back memories of the past and this year looks like more of the same. I believe it's one of the best rivalries in all of Ohio. It's just needed a good jump-start here recently. Campbell's been solid the past few years with new coaching. Hopefully Struthers will get there too with the new coach.cmhs_pride;904001 wrote:Struthers Fan, thank you for your kind words. I've always respected Campbell and their fans. They bleed the red & black. It's good to see a once proud school get back to where they should be. It shows hard work & determination.
I'll cheer for the Devils every week except one.
