Depends on what you want.Archibald 22;955990 wrote:I would go to the Eastwood game if I could, I think Ottawa Glandorf will definitely challenge them more than Huron will challenge Genoa
Eastwood- Wing T smash mouth running vs. OG- Just plain smash mouth
Genoa- Wing T smash mouth running vs. Huron- Spread pass happy w/ a little running. -
KatsarekoolKenton defeated the Wellington Dukes tonight 74 to 22. They were scoring at will against the Dukes with Mauk 27 of 29 for 504 yards. The back-up quarterback Sherman had 2 touchdowns in relief. The offense had over 700 yards of total offense for the game. The third string freshman team got in the game in the 4th quarter. The Defense held tough too. As a team, Kenton looked impressive. Great last home game for the seniors. Now on the road for the next opponent.

Rough game for my Dukes, and not a good note for Stoll to go out on. Best of luck to Kenton going forward. -

Stoll retiring? He was my head coach at Black River my junior & senior year.fan_from_texas;960230 wrote:Rough game for my Dukes, and not a good note for Stoll to go out on. Best of luck to Kenton going forward. -

I believe the Wellington opening was posted on the OHSAA website earlier, and I believe I read on here that he was retiring. I don't have any confirmation of it, though. He's a great coach (coached me all four years at Wellington), and I'd be sad to see him go. -

Yeah, he helped turn around our program and Young took the ball and ran with it.fan_from_texas;960238 wrote:I believe the Wellington opening was posted on the OHSAA website earlier, and I believe I read on here that he was retiring. Columbus Bishop Hartley vs. Eastwood @ Ashland University.
I'm shocked and glad that Genoa/Kenton didn't wind up @ Findlay Donnell Stadium. -

According to OHSAA, the Hartley Eastwood game will be held at Ashland High School rather than the University, which is unfortunate, because Ashland U has a nice facility for a division II school.
BGSU should be a great stage for Genoa and Kenton to play on -

I saw Ashland and immediately though AU not AHS. (woops)Archibald 22;960705 wrote:According to OHSAA, the Hartley Eastwood game will be held at Ashland High School rather than the University, which is unfortunate, because Ashland U has a nice facility for a division II school.

BGSU will be a good place to be this Saturday. At 3pm, Delphos St. John's and Tiffin Calvert will be playing there. Then as I stated Genoa and Kenton @ 7pm. -
bigkahunaAlso from the looks of it, Ashland HS has a nice stadium as well with turf.

Archibald 22Yes it seems that way, got to love the sites these games are played at each year!

buhrdogThe top 4 teams in the region won easily. Looking at this weeks games...It is hard for me to say but the two teams out of the NBC are probably going home.
I don't see Genoa's defense stopping the passing game. Does anyone have a different opinion. -
GenoaCometDon't know much about Kenton/Mauk beyond the huge passing numbers, but it sounds like the only way to keep them from scoring is to keep them off the field. I think the only way Genoa keeps this close is by establishing a running game and grinding down the clock. Try to trade scores with them and hope we can stop them at least once.
Can anyone comment on how Kenton's defense is against the run? I'm afraid that if Genoa can't quickly establish a running game, it might be a very long evening... -
adogI tried to find opposing teams rushing yds/game but could not find them. Here are some stats though:

That being said though, and I know this will sound weird, but Kenton's run D is better than their pass D. With the pass happy O they run, you would think the D would be able to defend the pass. but since most teams in the WBL feature the run before the pass (Elida the exception), Kenton's D coordinator emphasizes run D -

My HS is in the same league as Kenton. We run the Wing-T as well. They ran a 6-2 or 6-3 and go 1-on-1 with the lineman and have their backers/DBs come up to get the runner. Best thing is to do what Genoa does and get 3-4 yards off the quick hitter every play.GenoaComet;962221 wrote:Don't know much about Kenton/Mauk beyond the huge passing numbers, but it sounds like the only way to keep them from scoring is to keep them off the field. Because they load up everything, they can be passed on, but it's gotta be quick because of the pressure. -

That's a link to the WBL official website
Kenton gave up 164 yds rushing/game and 132 yds passing/game
In both categories, they were 5th in the league with the top team in both was 136 and 124 respectively. Take it for what it's worth. Also they were 4th in total defense. All out of 10 teams. -
buhrdogI remember going to a semifinal game Valley View and I think Margaretta in the mid 90's. That was when Valley View had those potent offenses. Margaretta took the opening kickoff and had the ball the entire first qtr and capping it with a TD. Valley View ended up pulling out a low scoring win but their offense barely took the field. If Genoa can do that they might have a chance. All year I felt if you can pass the ball you can beat Genoa.

GtownCometI think Genoa has a shot.
The majority of the passes thrown are quick screens.
If the DB's can make good open field tackles, keep the number of YAC's down and the D-Line can get pressure on Mauk within their lanes when they do take shots down the field, I think the Comets can keep them from striking quick every time they get the ball.
You aren't going to stop Kenton, you just have to keep the ball away from them and capitalize each time you have the ball.
If Genoa keeps Kenton's time of possession at 7:37 for the game like they did to Huron, it's going to be tough for them to put up enough points to beat Genoa.
I've watched the Shawnee game several times now and believe Genoa's Wing T is better than Shawnee's.
They kept the ball away from Kenton pretty well, they just couldn't finish.
This game is going to be a dandy. -

The even bigger thing about open field tackles is getting good, solid shots on Mauk. If you've watched film, you've seen that he tends to run around the backfield a lot and recklessly at that. I was watching film and saw him run ~ 15yds back, run in a circle, from one side line back to the middle of the field, then 7 yds back to the yard of scrimmage, and throw. His allusive ability makes the defense cover for 10+ seconds. Honestly though, it's like a video game.GtownComet;963119 wrote:I think Genoa has a shot.

Ok, back to D4 Region 14...sorry..
I have not watched Kenton a whole lot but try to get to 2 games every year and I have to say, Maty and the offense Kenton runs, is the most exciting and fun offense I have ever watched. Kahuna, you hit the nail on the head saying it is like a video game. If the school I follow was not playing Saturday night, I would be in BG to catch this game for sure..
Good Luck to both teams and to an injury free game -

I agree completely.bigkahuna;963140 wrote:The even bigger thing about open field tackles is getting good, solid shots on Mauk. When I first saw him I laughed out loud because it was like watching backyard football. I couldn't believe my eyes.
He's big and fast, but I don't think he has the moves that Micah Hyde had. Genoa's defense was disciplined enough to contain him when he scrambled.
The question is do we have the same type of athletes this year as when we played against Hyde. Can we execute the plan?
Mauk can run around all he wants but one thing about Genoa's defense is that they are relentless and they never stop swarming to the ball.
I just can't see Kenton putting up a gaudy number of points against Genoa.
...and I think Genoa will finish their drives, unlike Shawnee.
I see Genoa scoring at the very least 4 TD's.
But will it be enough and will it take enough time?
My biggest worry is that with the defense they run that Genoa will have several long TD runs and you can't trade blows with Kenton...
Find out Saturday. -

That's the biggest thing. People come in thinking they'll just go blow for blow with Kenton. It just doesn't work that way. Honestly the last time I saw that happen somewhat successfully was back when Kenton and Huron had some epic battles a few years ago. The way to beat Kenton is to do what Genoa did last week vs. Huron. Long, successful drives and disciplined defense. I'm sure you saw it on film Gtown, but Mauk would get hit/sacked a lot more if the defenses were disciplined. I don't know how many times I saw a lineman fall for the pump fake instead of running through him... reminds me of Vince Young vs. Okie State a few years ago.GtownComet;963204 wrote:I agree completely.
