Hillsdale's got a tough game on their hands this week. Hillsdale needs to execute at a much higher level this week compared to last if they want to win. It appears Loudonville's passing game is a threat, Hillsdale struggles in the secondary at times it will be an interesting matchup. Loudonville also has some hard-nosed D-lineman. Hillsdale's O-line and DBs need to be prepared and step it up a notch from last week IMO. Good luck to all the WCAL teams this week.

i think chippewas losing streak is closing in on 20

The Norwayne match up is an interesting one. I read the paper this morning. It said that Western Reserves TB has almost 550 yards rushing in 2 games. That's incredible. Add to that the fact that WR beat them last year and I think Norwayne will have their hands full but will win a tight one.

Hillsdale, Waynedale and Smithville will win easily

I'm going to give the nod to Rittman strictly because I want them to win

Dalton, Northwestern and Chippewa will all fall again
  • WCLfan
I think the Smithville/Fairless game will be closer then expected. the Falcons like to throw the football around, which is something that the Smithies have struggled with.

Well, week 3 is upon us and league play is next week, the season is flying. The same can't really be said for the WCAL. We could very easily have half the league roll into conference play at 0-3. Not exactly the best computer points scenario.

Norwayne has no choice but to pretty much roll through the league if they want to qualify for the playoffs. I'm unsure if an 8-2 record will get them there, actually a 9-1 might not be enough considering Chippewa, Rittman, Northwestern & Dalton won't exactly be a harbin points windfall. Friday, the cats should smack Reserve. The roughriders defense just won't be up to the task. I predict a high scoring affair with Norwayne scoring more.

Hillsdale, being D5 should have an easier road, I think they can afford a letdown week (not that they will). This week I think they will wear down the Redbirds with their ball control multi-back running attack in the second half.

Smithville is still a question mark. They have a nice backfield and stout line but depth is an issue. Great game last week. It's also good it was at home. If the game was played at Mogadore, I think it would have went the other way.

Waynedale??????, Beast seems a bit down on them right now but I think they'll pull out an upset this year. Both the Bears and the Smithies are long shots for week 11 IMO.

As for the bottom half of the league, I hope lessons get learned and experience gets earned. Good luck to all WCAL clubs.

    Nut,
the Western Reserve RB I think the paper was referring to is Willie Roth, a very explosive smallish back with good speed. Also a very dangerous return man.
  • Mr. Russell
As of now Hillsdale is a long shot for week 11 too if you look at the rankings. There is plenty of football to be played.

Since were talkin' WCAL and their teams playoff chances...........

WCAL regional assignments look tougher. Norwayne in D4-R13 can't lose much if at all. Hillsdale in D5-R19 may also have to run the table. If everything shakes out like I think...... their week 10 game could be for the league and the playoffs. The WCAL may not even get 2 playoff berths.

The WCAL is weak this year......
It boasts 4 teams who may not beat anyone other than each other in NWN, DAL, RITT & CHIP.
2 teams with high hopes in SMV & WD...both could be pretty good or pretty average.....either way they each get 4 wins from the above teams.

    that leaves.....
2 proven teams with lots of returning lettermen......NOR & HILL
should either stumble on a WD or SMV it could destroy their playoff dreams

At this point I don't think anyone outside Creston & Jeromesville really has much of a shot at week 11......and those 2 are probably on thin ice.

I think the league goes 5-3 or 4-4...
HILL, NOR take care of business
SMV hopefully keeps the momentum (and the 50-50 cash.....AhaaAhaha...Red Rum....sucker)
Rittman........Go Tribe..I'm ready to see a good game of Mounties & Indians.

Waynedale......maybe that 5th win for the WCAL....then again....... maybe not.

    The rest...........Forget about it.
The Dawgs are still learning to bite.
A good Husky team at Mogadore....possible......This Husky team at Mogadore......never.
    Chippewa.......no explanation needed.

If Waynedale or Smithville finish with an 8-2 record and a win over Hillsdale or Norwayne they are going to make the playoffs.

I'D like to agree, however...it seems MAKING the playoffs in R19 is a little tougher....if im not mistaken, teams 5-8 in R17 last year would not have had the Harbins to get in R19

Northwestern vs Mogadore - Husky take one to the chin again . Mogadore by 17
Chipps vrs Columbia -- Columbia by 24
Norwayne vs Western Reserve -- Norwayne by 10
Rittman vs Mapleton. --Rittman by 6 UNLESS they try to prove they can win a game without running the ball
Smithville vs Fairless -- Smithvilles running game hard to handle, Smithies by 10
Dalton vs Timken -- Timken by 6
Hillsdale vs Loudonville -- upset of the week, Loudonville by 6
Waynedale vs Triway - - game of the week. Bears pooch kick their way out of this one and the Titans win a squeaker. Triway by 1

    Mr Russell,
    I hope you're right.

Ever since the Ridgewood fan brought the whole region 19 points thing to my attention, I'm starting to wonder. The last couple years, with a large WCAL contingent in region 17 (Bears, Smithies, Huskies, Bobcats) we had success getting teams into the playoffs. Hillsdale, region 18, also has been getting in.

Now with the Cats & Huskies off to D4 and Dalton in rebuilding at D6 most of the league has been put in region 19 including Hillsdale. This region is massive, going all the way to Ironton. I don't yet totally understand why it takes so many points to qualify out of this region but the last couple years this has been the case.

I now have to wonder if any team from the WCAL in this region can afford 2 losses.
  • Mr. Russell
I am actually am very close to Monroe Central who got in with an 8-2 record last year, playing similar schools like the WCAL schools. I think if they could get in then Smithville or Waynedale could. Mogadore is going to win 8 or 9 games to help the Smithies out. Not sure exactly about Waynedale's non-league opposition. Also, for the record, I would take the bottom teams in our league over Monroe Central many years.
  • Red Rum
I agree with your take on the caliber of football down that way. I've seen D6 Beallsville and Sistersville WVa play a few times over the years. I was less than impressed.

still, the harbin points accumulation for region 19 troubles me.

I don't think Fairless will be able to protect their QB all nite against the Smithies which might lead into some good opportunities...
  • Go Falcons
The changes in divisions should help Hillsdale.
    Last year Hillsdale:
    9-1: 7th R18; 16.7 avg, 35 level 1, 132 level 2
    played: this year:
    1 - D IV - 3
    5- D V - 5
    4- D VI - 2

    Dawson-Bryant
    8-2: 8th D5 R19; 16.9 avg, 37 level 1, 132 level 2
    played:
    2- D II
    5- D IV
    2- D V
    1- D VI

Fairless definitely has trouble with their o line stopping the blitz.

Good luck to my boys in the WCAL!
  • oldsmithie
Over the years the harbin points have been up and down for all the regions. I dont think you can base your assumptions on last year alone, you have to look at several years, to compare regions. Smithville has played in 3 different regions over the years, 17, 18 and 19. and has qualified in each of them. This is Smithvilles second go round in region 19. I do agree that Norwayne will have it tough in Div 4. The WCAL is made up of smaller schools and the Bobcats might have to run the table just to qualify.
  • luckydog
Good luck all WCAL teams this week!!
  • Red Rum
After a little thought and research (and I stress the word "little")

In 2009 & 2010, it was definitely a lot harder to qualify in region 19
    2010
    8th qualifier in R19 points-16.9
    8th qualifier in R18 points-12.44
    8th qualifier in R17 points-13.45
    2009
    8th qualifier in R19 points-17.9
    8th qualifier in R18 points-13.3
    8th qualifier in R17 points-13.55

In the preceeding 2 years (2007 & 2008) it was much more even
    2008
    8th qualifier in R19 points-14.75
    8th qualifier in R18 points-15.25
    8th qualifier in R17 points-14.2
    2007
    8th qualifier in R19 points-14.21
    8th qualifier in R18 points-14.15
    8th qualifier in R17 points-16.15

The 2 seasons before.....Region 19 was the easiest to qualify from

Then I had an epiphany!!! (I don't get those too often)
Everything changes every other year with the head count(Duh!!)......So this is basically a fresh year with new region assignments and history is out the window.

You guys will have to excuse me, I ain't too bright (just a little more than Paul). afterall, I was the one who bought 50-50 tickets at Smithville.

Good Luck to everyone this evening
