So if all the talent graduates and there is little to no talent and they dont do well its the coaching?OQB;951475 wrote:Sure that is a great record for any coach to have....but look at the games when he is up against a very very good opponent. The weaknesses are really exposed in the coaching.
Like I said before, we will really see how good he is in 2 years when the talent graduates. -

Provided that happens. I've been told they have some good young talent coming up.OQB;951475 wrote:Sure that is a great record for any coach to have....but look at the games when he is up against a very very good opponent. The weaknesses are really exposed in the coaching.

Still, I think this coaching staff is going to be leading some "almost" teams. They'll "almost" win County a couple times, but they'll lose to the good teams in the league, because they'll be out-coached.
I hope that I am off, though. I will be rooting for Norwayne every step of the way. Those boys have a lot of fight in them, and I hope they can maximize it in the coming weeks. -

Not necessarily, but if the success seems to be dependent solely on the talent, then it would seem that the coaching provides little.dontcare;951478 wrote:So if all the talent graduates and there is little to no talent and they dont do well its the coaching?
Great coaches in the area like Schrock, Ramsey, Tipton, and even younger ones like Williams and Thut have seemed to get the most out of their teams, whether they are very talented or not. -
dontcareWell, we can hope the same will happen with Norwayne over the next few years.

Except when they play the Smithies, sure.dontcare;951492 wrote:Well, we can hope the same will happen with Norwayne over the next few years. -

Schrock and Saris kept us in check. Monday was not a good day if something had to be corrected. It was much easier not to go down that path.distantsmithie;951328 wrote:Having had a kid in the Smithie program I was always impressed with the level of discipline and respect respected of the players toward coaches, parents and opponents. Even after the loss at the state championship, Marion Pleasant folks commented on how courteous and disciplined the team was. That is a big reason for the success and work ethic of the Schrock program. I hope whoever replaces him one day recognizes the value of a disciplined program.
Always proud to be a Smithie! -

To an extent......Look at the great coaches and you will see very limited years when they are "down". Great coaches always have their teams ready to play and are successful even when the talent isn't there. We'll see if he has what it takes and learns from these games that are under his belt now.dontcare;951478 wrote:So if all the talent graduates and there is little to no talent and they dont do well its the coaching?
Question is, do you think he is at Norwayne to stay or if a bigger school wants him do you see him leaving like Maltarich? -

I tried to reply to your pm but I don't think it worked. Don't have enough posts to reply. I'll get back to you when it allows me to respond.OQB;951507 wrote:To an extent......Look at the great coaches and you will see very limited years when they are "down". At one time, I had a great deal of respect for Maltarich. If he just left for a bigger school, I'd be sad to hear that.OQB;951507 wrote:Question is, do you think he is at Norwayne to stay or if a bigger school wants him do you see him leaving like Maltarich? -

Do you or have you previously coached at any Wayne County schools in the last few years?O-Trap;951576 wrote:At one time, I had a great deal of respect for Maltarich. If he just left for a bigger school, I'd be sad to hear that. -
THE4RINGZHe left for a bigger schools, coming up through the ranks is how coaching works. Why does this upset you so much? Just curious.

We're Smithville boys. We're used to coaches sticking around for 20+ years and working on their farm.THE4RINGZ;951587 wrote:He left for a bigger schools, coming up through the ranks is how coaching works. Why does this upset you so much? Just curious. -

Doesn't "upset" me. He just struck me as the kind of guy who wasn't using the small school as a stepping stones, though most coaches do.THE4RINGZ;951587 wrote:He left for a bigger schools, coming up through the ranks is how coaching works. Why does this upset you so much? Just curious. -
THE4RINGZSeems to be the nature of the beast.
Schrock is an anomaly. -

Not just Schrock but his assitants to. Bill Hardman, Chuck Saris, and Sam Sayre have stayed loyal to him for a very long time. Sam was a volunteer coach during my time and donated a lot of time and money into the program.THE4RINGZ;951611 wrote:Seems to be the nature of the beast.

When Schrock retires he's going to be replaced by an awesome coach. We're really lucky to be in the position we're in. -

Otrap-
Why do you have less respect for Maltarich than you used too?
He pretty much took the best jobs offered until he made it home. Same thing Besancon(sp?) did.
or am I missing your point? -

Coach B left Smithville to take over in my opinion the worst football team in Ohio. Most people would consider the offensive coordinator position at Smithville a more desirable position than the head coaching job at New London. What he did at New London was amazing. But Smithvilles head coaching job is going to be his whether he left or not. -
madman11Don't get me started on Coach B....He was a hell of a coach don't get me wrong but he went back on his word. He would go to all the younger kids and say he didn't give a damn about Smithville. Claimed he would be the head coach at Rittman no matter what other offers he got

I don't. I didn't say I have less respect for him for leaving. I said it's be sad.Red Rum;951709 wrote:Otrap-

I haven't kept up with Maltarich, which is why I said "used to" have respect for him. -

Sometimes it's better that the troops not know the truth or they might not fight for you.madman11;951726 wrote:Don't get me started on Coach B....He was a hell of a coach don't get me wrong but he went back on his word. But if that did happen I could see why some Rittman people would be upset with him.
How you view the man depends on what side of the line you're on.
You seem to be familiar with Rittman football. What's the story on Mike Baker? I know he used to be HC at Rittman and is now at Smithville. How did that come to be? -
OQBLooks like I sparked some good chatter!
Good reading!
I think the WCAL is full of guys that will stay at the school until they retire:
Schrock (Besancon when Schrock retires) Smithville
Williams at Hillsdale
Doty at Dalton
Zuercher at Waynedale
Thut at Northwestern
Would you put Harbour in that catagory? I'm not sure, I get the feeling he wants the "fame" that would come with coaching at a big school. He was at Div. III Northwest and experienced success there under Vic Whiting.....who lets not forget coached at Div. V Delphos St. Johns before taking the jump to Northwest. -
1_beastDont forget Dennis at Rittman

It's hard to tell with Harbour. Is he from Wayne County or the surrounding area?OQB;951737 wrote:Looks like I sparked some good chatter!

The thing the rest of these teams have going for them is that their coaches are from this area so they are less likely to up and leave.
I'm not familiar with Harbour, but if he is willing to leave Delphos I see no reason why he'd stay at Norwayne if offered a better job. Not trying to bad mouth Norwayne but St. Johns is one of the best smaller schools. -
OQBI'm sorry, should've made it clear, it was Vic Whiting who left delphos for the job at Northwest.....harbour was an assistant who started his coaching career at Northwest under Whiting.
Not sure where Harbour is from though.
Edit:
This is the article from when Harbour got hired at Norwayne:
