Steubenville Big Red 2010

Is that the game that Wintersville won but Reno ran on to the field crying to the refs and they reversed their call giving the victory to Big red. Yea, I remember that game too.FairwoodKing wrote: I was at that game in '87. That was the weirdest ending to a game that I have ever seen. The final score was 28-27 Big Red. That's all anyone cares about.Al Capone wrote:

Al CaponeNo wonder the series got cancelled. The worst travesty in Ohio high school sports. Ever!

DarkonFairwood I see you decided to not respond to my last post. So I will assume that you have no disagreement.

I have a lot of disagreement. I'm sure if Edison wanted to play us, they would be welcome.Darkon wrote: Fairwood I see you decided to not respond to my last post. So I will assume that you have no disagreement.
How did this discussion about Big Red dropping teams get started? Reno has a policy against cancelling contracts. You haven't convinced me that Reno was responsible for stopping the series with Edison. And even if he had done that, it would have been the only time in his 27 years as head coach.
In 2007 Big Red had the chance to start a series with Dover for week two. No contract was signed but there were serious talks. Then Creek came into the picture. They wanted to play us in week one. We already had Buchtel signed for that week. Since Reno refused to cancel on Buchtel, we arranged to play them week two. That pushed Dover out of the picture. I['m sure Big Red people would have preferred to play Dover, especially since we were Div. IV that year and Dover was still in Div. III so there would have been no chance of us meeting in the playoffs. But Reno refused to break a contract, so Dover did not play us. -

That's BS. Considering how the game ended, I'm surprised Big Red didn't get screwed in that game. The referees finally got the call right and Big Red won a game we deserved. -

I know that Coach Reno came to Edison AD and asked to end the contract. I'm not saying that if Edisons AD wanted to continue that Coach Reno would have backed out! They both agreed to end it!
My problem was the perception you and others were portraying that Edison was the one that wanted out. -
FairwoodKing
Maybe Big Red did want out of the contract, but I refuse to believe that we forced Edison out. If we had wanted to do that, we simply would have cancelled the contract and left it at that.Darkon wrote:

I have seen Big Red criticized for all sorts of things, but this takes the cake. Big Red probably has the best reputation in the entire state for not breaking contracts, even when it would be to our advantage to do so (such as the case with Buchtel in 2007).
Let's talk about something that's more relevant. -
FairwoodKing
If this is the case, why has the school kept it a secret? I'm sure they would have already had to line up teams for an event like this. You seem to know what you're talking about so I assume you're right. I would just like to have a little more information.ryan_nolan wrote: Steubenville will be "hosting" an event this fall. Take it to the bank. -
FairwoodKingI'm curious to know why Big Red doesn't play Canton McKinley. We already play them in all the sub-varsity games, so it would seem logical to play them on the varsity level. I might add that Big Red has done quite well against McKinley over the past few years.

I guess legends grow as time moves on. I have the game tape somewhere of that contest, and I don't remember Reno running onto the field crying to the refs. The play was in the west endzone..more towards the south corner. After the forward lateral, the refs huddled and made the right call. The whole thing took maybe 10 seconds. I remember a few Big Red players like Del Vinson being next to the refs huddle while they conferenced, and they were making their point.Al Capone wrote:

Also, contrary to popular belief, this was not a playoff game, it was week 7 of the regular season. The playoff game was in 1985. -

Yea, It was kinda like this past years Inkster game... The refs tried, but Inkster shut them up too. I think someone sent them a copy of the '87 game so they knew what to expectAl Capone wrote:

d.woods50fan.Inkster has nothing to do with wintersville ... you just worry about out of state "power" weirton and the John Hays of the world before you put down BR ... or even better have your beloved skins beat any team from steubenville before you talk crazy.

Besides, what "holy power" says that I can't say what I feel because of open enrollment? Sorry that my pride kept me out of Big Red... Couldn't pay me enough to have attended there, I'm not a ship jumper. -
FairwoodKing
Are you going to start that open enrollment again? Creek has the same open enrollment policy as Big Red, as do Buckeye, Toronto, and Edison. Why doesn't Creek draw players from Big Red? I'll tell you why. Big Red's program is one of the best in the state and Creek's program isn't worth a hill of beans. You need to actually beat somebody before you criticize us.sonofsam wrote:

What does Inkster have to do with anything? We lost to Inkster because we had a defensive breakdown in the final minute. Inkster would have blown out Creek by five touchdowns.sonofsam wrote:

And as far as the refs are concerned, if you think we own them, then explain how we got 17 penalties in the Creek game? Big Red played a very sloppy game that night. That's the only reason Creek scored on our first team defense. The next week we went on the road and shut out the WPIAL AAAA champ. -

I didn't say "all" of them... Besides, you weren't trying to play catch-up with us. The refs did pin Inkster pretty deep late in the game though! It was a good effort!FairwoodKing wrote:

What rule says we have to beat anyone before I can voice an opinion? I'll tell you what, give our players back, edisons back, weirs back, and the rest of the valleys back and then I will quit talking. Beat someone with your OWN players and then you can say whatever you want. Why so defensive?? You have everything you want and you are a so called "Top Program" so why not just ignore my posts and live happy? My comments shouldn't be "worth a hill of beans" right?FairwoodKing wrote:

FairwoodKingWe won the state championship in 1984 and were state runners-up in 1987 and 1988 without any open enrollment players. That proves we can do it without Creek people.

Technically since there was no open-enrollment then there were no open-enrollment players.Al Capone wrote:

ManO'WarSOS, give us our 6th ward back and we'll call it even.
Were any IC, or Weir, or Edison people complaining when some of our players went to their schools???? Yea, didn't think so, so STFU.
