WEEK 12: CAMPBELL MEMORIAL ( 10-1) VS. AKRON MANCHESTER ( 11-0 )

  • 24quickie
    Manchester 52-21..Final.

Manchester played an ok game, but the margin of victory was only because of missed chances and mistakes by Campbell. Congrats on a great season. On to next week Panthers!

IF JOHN CHAMP WOLFE EVER REFS ANOTHER CAMPBELL GAME THEIR WILL BE A MAJOR PROBLEM. HE NEEDS TO STAY OUT OF THE CITY LIMITS. IF THE A.D. SCHEDULES HIM FOR ANY MORE BASKETBALL GAMES HE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF. THAT WAS THE WORST OFFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE IVE EVER SEEN. WE SHOULDVE BEEN WINNING 14-0. AND WOLFE RAPED US. O BY THE WAY HES A CAMPBELL MEMORIAL GRAD. HE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF. IF PINCAIRO SCHEDULES HIM FOR BBALL GAMES THEIR WILL BE PROBS MANY PEOPLE ARE ABSOLUTELY INFURIATED THAT HE SCREWED US. THAT WAS TERRIBLE. CHAMP ULL NEVER BE SEAN SMITH...SHAME ON YOU.

I do agree about that call. It was very ticky-tack and Manchester should've started the game down 14-0.
  • soupcitysoldier
THAT REF GRADUATED FROM CAMPBELL...IM NOT SAYING HE SHOULDVE GAME CAMPBELL CALLS, BUT HE REALLY SCREWED US ON THAT CALL. HE WAS TERRIBLE ALL NIGHT. HE OBVIOUSLY DOESNT KNOW THE GAME. I WILL BE CALLING THE STATE TOMORROW TO REQUEST THAT HE IS NO LONGER ASSIGNED TO CAMPBELL GAMES...ITS A CONFLICT OF INTEREST ANYWAYS. WE DONT WANT HIM ANYWAYS. HES NOT A RED DEVIL. HE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF. STAY OUT OF CAMPBELL.

Hello all. I have been lurking these boards for while and thought I should post my two cents before everyone started going crazy over the game tonight. I have been a life-long Manchester Panther, player, graduate, and now fan. I was at the game tonight and I wanted to bring up some points about a couple of things I observed.

1.) The officiating. It was bad, even awful. First of all, I completely agree that the offensive pass interference call on CM was unbelievable. But believe me, there were other interference calls that just did not make any sense at all. Prior to the interference call, I sat right in front of the onside kick that gave CM the ball. It was very clear a player had touched the ball prior to its traveling ten yards. You know, I joked with my buddy that they now need a makeup call, and, by God the next play that pass interference call was made. Wow. Then, at another point, one of CM's players got called for a late hit, which clearly was incidental contact - so, we figured now CM deserved a makeup call. By God, later in the game, on CM's drive to score, they picked up a first down on a bogus pass interference call that was clearly just a great defensive play. The referee was behind the players and in no way was in position to make that call. So, to put that into perspective, that's four calls that cost either team points. I really hope next week the officials are a little more "on top of their game", so to speak. Anyway, onto the stuff that can be controlled...

2.) Campbell ran the football all over Manchester. Do not be fooled by the margin of victory. Manchester had no hope of stopping Campbell's ground game. And, to be honest, if CM hadn't dropped a couple of flawless passes, it would be debatable that Manchester could have stopped the passing game either. Campbell lost two fumbles and threw two pick 6's. It was CM's own big mistakes that were a big part of their undoing.

3.) Campbell could not stop the pass. Ultimately, this game was won by Manchester through the air. Contrary to playing three decades plus of tank-based smashmouth football, Manchester's playoff playbook has changed to the 85% pass, 15% run variety. Not too much fun for us hardened graduates, but exciting as all hell to watch. CM was having a tough time covering the speedy Manchester receivers, and really had no answer for Manchester's short 5 to 10 yard passing game. The corners and safety were just playing way too soft, and the separation they gave was all Manchester needed to pick the secondary apart. The line held up fairly well, but at times was outmatched by CM's strength up front.

4.) Manchester could not run the ball until the game was out of reach for CM. I think this is something that will need to change in order for Manchester to hang with or even beat Chagrin Falls next week. I think most will agree that Chagrin Falls will be the best team they have played since Mooney in 2007 - everyone needs to run an extra lap or two after practice and be 100% focused on the task at hand.

5.) The final comment I wanted to make is how small a team Campbell Memorial was (in quantity, not size, weight, etc.). I am pretty sure their entire squad played in the game. I would not be surprised if there were less than 22 boys on that team. If I were a CM player, I would be very proud to be a part of a team like that and to accomplish what they have this year. I have much respect for their program, and thought they were a very classy team. I hope the schools can schedule some regular season games in the next few years - I think they would make fantastic win-win match-ups for both schools.

^^^^^^^^ Many good observations above by Footballavarium. Campbell seemed to lose all of their momentum following the offensive pass interference call which negated a touchdown and what would have been a 14-0 Campbell lead. The Red Devils did not play very well and made far too many mistakes to beat a good team like Manchester. Footballavarium, Campbell dressed 34 players for the game. That is about the average for a Campbell squad in any year, 34-40 tops. I was surprised Manchester did not take a knee or two in the final 90 seconds, instead electing to add to their point total. Granted, Campbell could have stopped them. But taking a knee in that situation would have shown a little more respect. Regardless, good luck to Manchester next week.

I was not sure if the official who called the pass interference play was John Wolfe. If it was, I can't understand why he was officiating in that game anyway. A couple of questionable calls he made were key to stopping any momentum Campbell Memorial had in the game. From my perspective, he should not have been officiating a playoff game in which his alma mater was a participant. The entire officiating crew was bad. But Campbell laid an egg at the worst possible time against a good team. A good team will turn mistakes into points. And Manchester did just that. Nevertheless a good season for Campbell. The Devils finish at 10-2. Seniors, thank you very much and good luck to each and every one of you in the future.

You know I was thinking the same thing myself concerning the kneel, but I honestly don't think they meant any disrespect by it. They did at the minimum revert to the running attack toward the end of the game, although one could argue that was just to keep the clock running.

I also agree that a referee should not be officiating a game where an obvious team connection exists. It just looks suspicious, even if a perfect game is called.

Congratulations to the Manchester players and staff, your short passing game killed Campbell, good luck next week!

Campbell: Great season, keep your heads up! There's alot of talent returning and coming up through the system, looking forward to many successful years! Go Devils!

Footballvalarium made great points. Guys I have to tell you....we really need to make sure that was Champ last night. I keep thinking yep its him....then I would look again and you know what, I don't think it was fellas. Maybe I was wrong but we need to know that for sure. I for one have no clue who to ask. Ask a Coach I guess. I will text someone right now who played three years before Champ and was on the field last night. I will let you know. If it was him...then all I can say is wow.

I mean that 14-0 start is a complete change of momentum. That being said, Our defensive backs had problems all night and for that matter all year with the passing game. They give too much room and cannot cover over the top as well which always confused me. If you give a guy ten yards in front of you.....how the hell is he getting behind you. Last I looked, we were very fast as well. Oh well.....Manchester, big big game next week. Enjoy preparing in week thirteen...you guys did nothing less than what you needed to last night.

OK this just in....it was indeed JOHN CHAMP WOLFE.

Anyway, footballvalarium, and I know I spelled your call name wrong, lol, yes Bigdean is right you guys could have taken a knee. But you know what.....we could have stopped you also. We quit. And that is the bottom line and i don't want to hear it from Campbell huddlers. We flat out quit and you guys all know it. So don't sugar coat it. We have a group like number 20 and 50 along with number 3 and 75 who played hard all year. Alot more can go into that group....alot more. Then we have a group that one minute they are alive the next minute they are dead. I mean they flat out quit on that team in the second qtr. and I for one am not going to sugar coat it because the majority of that team busted their butt to get to this level. Their teammates didn't follow up. Nothing to hang their heads about. 10-2....AAC champs.....beat Struthers...one game away from regional championship. Alot to continue to build on. God Bless the seniors and looking forward to next year. We should be a force for awhile.

Alot of great points on the game from all the chatters....First before I get into anything I want to congratulate Manchester on a great game they are very disciplined and did not beat themselves and to Campbell great season tough way to go out but nonetheless it was something again to build on.

First and foremost I will not come on here and blast John Wolfe he was not the reason why we lost the game we were in it up until the pick 6. Albeit it would have helped and gave us alot of momentum, the very next play we dropped a wide open pass that could have resulted in a TD by #83. Several drops and miscues by #83 on the evening, he dropped everything coming his way he did not even try to field one punt, they punted from deep in their territory and instead of fair catching it say at our 45 he lets it bounce 15 yards back and thus again changed the field position with the score 7-7. He never stepped up when needed as a senior and as a supposed DI recruit he looked more like last night was his final game.THey sorely missed zembillas he is not scared and he has caught many balls over the middle for lester exactly what they needed with the safety 5 yards off the ball last night.

All season long and including last night and in my previous posts I have mentioned our secondary and wideouts being our weak point and against a disciplined team it finally showed. They do not tackle well, cover well, hit, compete, play physical, and worst of all they walked everywhere. On the offensive side of the ball these same players walk back to the huddle each play. Since week 1 they have dropped many passes and how many fumbles lost or not lost have our wideouts have on the season? That my friends and I do not like to point fingers is the reason why Campbell is not in Week 13.

Our offensive line played good to prove it J'ales had well over 200 yards rushing. Lester other than his two picks did not play bad I think he was in unfortunate situations. He had 1 wideout with a stacked I all night with 11 guys in the box no matter the score. what happened to the spread? We can utilize him in the spread. He can run or throw, decide to take it or hand it off to a 2,000 yard back lol. Our defensive line played their hearts out and once again our linebackers played great they will be missed. They also did a good job of playing both ways and blocking for J'ales in the running game. Special teams wise I guess that struthers game where they stop at the 40 was no game plan. We just dont run down on kickoffs, watch the film of their guys flying down. Instead each opponent gets the ball at their own 40 to start a drive unbelievable. To wrap up on the special teams do we do any directional punting? I never seen this kicker/punter play worse he was punting 30 yards no hangtime right to the return man he looked coooooold lol.

Finally I would like to speak on behavior which was most disappointing thing about the game. You win with class and you also lose with class. These young men are representing a city that has supported this team all year long as it should be. However, a teammate is down with an injury and you have those same WR/DB shooting the breeze behind the bench standing up and walking around. If you look over at the other sideline the whole team took a knee. Very outclassed, #21 acting like a fool on the sidelines after a play when the Coach was merely trying to speak to him was uncalled for. Unfortunately that was the most intensity he showed all night long as he was repeatedly burnt for scores. One last note at the end of the game #1 was seen by many many many fans shooting the football to his teammate who is also a bball player that is a shame. This is the same guy who everyone in the stands knew was practicing basketball all week including the day before the game. That is just disrespectful to your teammates and to the football program as a whole by not only Coach Danilov but the player. Coach Sikora is a great guy and has done a wonderful job with this team. For Coach Danilov to allow that is very very disrespectful and selfish and classless on his part.

Congratulations on a great season to all the players and coaches it will not be forgotten. To all the seniors good luck in the future you really helped rebuild the program. Big congratulations to J'ales Hughes whom I believe broke the single season rushing record last night. Great player with a huge upside heading into his senior year, get in the weight room my friend you will be a force to be reckoned with as with all his teammates. Good luck next season as you will almost assuredly see Akron Manchester again if we advance they are junior laden. Do not forget this you will see them again.

Congrats on a great season Campbell.

BigDean It was Champ John Wolf. And we all know he will hold a grudge about how his brother was treated as a player. We got screwed and the tapes need to be send to the State OHSAA Cause he should have never ever been refereeing that game. He called that but would not cal all the pass interference on Manchester.. But regardless we also killed ourself. great teams win hard games. We are a great team But why did some players look like they gave up in the third QT. sitting on the bench!! get up stand with your fellow team mates. the only person that should have been sitting was 77 i think that was the one who got hurt. Very disappointed in some of our boys.

To all the seniors Skevo Lester and Lets_GO_devils brother lol cant think of his number and same lol. Sorry Lets_go. And the rest of the Seniors. Thanks for sticking around and hope you the best in collage. Especially Skevo... I hope next year We go all the way. And one other thing to all the people that think this will be the end to campbell football cause we are losing some great seniors. LOL go ahead and think that!! Us huddlers know different. Next year could be even better. Campbell will not be rebuilding they will be reloading. We will be back. Until next year Go Devil's!!!!

    Congratulations Manchester

Campbell was seldom behind in any game this season with the exception of falling behind in the game at Salem. I expected more out of our kids in handling a situation where they fell behind by more than two scores. Like a few of my good friends and fellow huddlers stated above, some of the starters did indeed quit on their teammates, their coaches, and the large throng of Campbell fans that attended the game in Ravenna last night. Campbell was very much in the game until the pick 6 was thrown. I was surprised Campbell did not go to the spread offense more in the game. Campbell used that stacked-I because the defense Manchester played was similar to that of Girard, a team Campbell exploited in week 8 by using the stacked -I. But Manchester had a better defensive unit than Girard. I am surprised we did not change things up more on offense. Ja'les got his 200 yards, played hard, and did not quit, which is more than I can say for a few of his teammates. The running game for Campbell did fine. But the rest of the offense was shut down, not because of great defensive play, but because Campbell did not go to the spread formation. When your team is down by three scores, take some chances. Use your speed and your skill in the passing game. Use the quarterback who can not only hit his receivers but is dangerous when he scrambles. As far as John Wolfe goes, I have known him for years. He is a good guy. I do not think he holds any grudge over how his brother was treated in 1994. What I do believe is the OHSAA had no business assigning John to officiate a playoff game that involved Campbell Memorial. I do not know if John could have turned down the assignment or not.
Ja'les did push off a little on the touchdown play that was called back. But I have seen more contact where a flag was not thrown. John evidently thought that the contact was enough to merit a flag. The fact is Campbell did not play their best last night and got beat by a good Manchester team. I see good things for the next several years for this Campbell program.
  • oldschoolreddev
Champ should not have been allowed to work this game. That didn't take away from the job Manchester did on us. They beat us fair & square. Our kids quit! Not all of them but more than enough to be noticed and more than enough to be embarrased.
  • realdeal6
oldschool, I could not have heard it better...NOT ALL OF THEM but more than enough TO BE NOTICED and more than enough to BE EMBARRASED.....THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE, its the same problem they have when they go over to basketball its the same guys...
  • cmhs_pride
Fellas, I am fortunate to have a job that allows me to get to know these young men a bit more on a personal level than many others may get the opportunity to do.

I know several of these players very well and talked to them today via text messaging. Our LB's apologized to me for last nights loss. THEY APOLOGIZED TO ME!!!!!!!! What does that tell you about the character of these kids. Why in the world do they think they had to apologize TO ME for??? Who the hell am I. I will tell you who I am. I am a Campbell boy. And in their minds they had a job to do which was to represent this town. They feel like they did not do that last night. Did you watch those two last night? David Benedis and John Sikora....don't you ever apologize to me or anyone else again gentlemen. YOU BOTH have been an absolute joy to watch. You represented this town and made us prouder than hell. You both along with David Guidos, number 77, J'ales, and Lester played as hard as you could. So did Martinez, McWilson, Little, and a few others. Thank you all for making this town proud. That goes for you as well Skevo. They missed you last night brother in a big way. Because besides J'ales, as far as ball handlers go, apparently everyone else put their basketball shoes on early. And in all honesty after what i found out this week...i don't give a damn if they go 0-20 this year. I really don't.

If I was number 23 by the way, I would have grabbed number 1 after the game and carried him on his head to the bus after leaving me out to dry every single kickoff with no blocking effort whatsoever. I'm sorry I will not sugar coat it. I have been pissed off all day by the way some of this team played last night and hurt their teammates who worked hard to move on. They were not better than us........you allowed them to be.

danilov and champ should both be ashamed of themselves...if im the A.D. you have to pull danilov aside and say something, and if im the A.D. i do not call champ for another 7th, 8th, or freshman game ever again. i dont think the a.d. can control whose assigned to varsity, but he is responsible for those grade levels i think. champ should never be given that opportunity again. i love this town and its people and i would never ever make that call against my alma mater...hes not a red devil to me. and if this has anything to do with wink he should be more ashamed, his brother destroyed himself, no one else. his brother is probably the most overrated player to ever come out of campbell...ask guys on the 89 90 team what they think about wink...theyll tell u.
  • cmhs_pride
Ask anyone in Campbell what they think. They'll tell you. Not just guys who played football 3 years before him. It is what it is. Next year is promising as is the future period. As for basketball....very curious to see how this season pans out with this team. Comical is my answer
  • realdeal6
I think you guys are going a bit overboard with the John Wolfe situation. Yea it hurt. Bottom line is a select few QUIT. Plain and simple and after a while they started to get their %&* kicked.
  • cmhs_pride
As an example of what realdeal is talking about....ok he made a bad call I agree. Cost us a TD and a chance to be up 14-0. So we do exactly what I hoped we would do....go right back to the same play again. And we know who was wide open, and we know what he did with the ball...as he has done all season long. Either way we were still up and I guess we decided, (a select few), that the game was over and it was time to play basketball. So the select few got their wish. And in all honesty, I can care less if their wish turns into a nightmare of a season in roundball. From what I have heard this whole week, all the way to how I watched these select few perform not only Friday night....but on the court in the district championship last year...I could give a flying you know what what they do. I have no time or patience for 17 year olds with attitude problems who do not want to make a difference and care about nothing more than themselves. And you will see that this bball season fellas. Trust me.

Wolfe stunk as Campbell's QB and Stinks as a ref. If he is holding grudges because he's brother screwed up his own football career, than thats sad! They should revoke his license for refereeing football or basketball. Campbell had a great season, but made too many mistakes, couldn't control pass rush off the edge and couldn't stop the pass. I think they did all their damage on 2 pass plays that Manchester ran the whole game. When you get this deep in the playoffs, you have to have your A game on. Campbell didn't!!
