DIII; Region 11 ...... your thoughts

    Public Venue?
Our booster meeting attendance figures are but a mere fraction compared to the 60's and 70's. Once, my brother and I split a 50/50 drawing of $142.00; $72.00 apiece, from tickets sold at one meeting. The booster meetings were held in the cafeteria with some of the overflow crowd standing in the hall. The coming game was discussed by the Head Coach and coaches of the defense and offense. We were told what to look for and who would be the impact players of the opposition. Those meetings were both enlightening and enjoyable.
Today, meetings consist of a few dozen people; several older men sitting in the front row eating all the doughnuts and sliding off to slumber on a sugar high with the booster officers plus a few others asking some of the questions.
One gets the impression that the meetings are a nuisance to Reno and that may be so. That being said, a head coach must be in charge at all times and this includes those meetings. Down through past years I've heard some of the most inane questions asked by some of those boosters. One in particular was from 2 brothers who asked Reno if our team would beat the betting spread downtown.
Reno threw them out by asking them to leave; he felt that strongly about betting on High School Sports and I agree with that.
Today, it is crucial that any weakness and or injuries be kept in house. I always said there are only 2 ways rumors can travel faster than computers: African Drums and Women's Beauty Shops.
When Reno makes a mistake, he admits it fully; conversly, he should be allowed to bask in the glory with his staff.
There have been many poor coaches and staffs in our system down through the years, but Reno and this staff are not one of them. Enjoy this era while if lasts; this too shall pass.

    Cheers.

Our first year ever in the playoffs, and we led at the half. But yes, I forgot, you're the greatest.

I said nothing about the greatness of Big Red, I was simply pointing out that letting a team score 28 unanswered point in a half isn't letting a game "slip away"!

Yet, you people never miss the opportunity to toss the word "beating" in there whenever possible. Don't shy away from your arrogance Grasshopper....embrace it. ;)

BTW, Big Red didn't need any home field advantage to pound Salem last year in the playoffs.
You rank the stadiums of the region 11 teams, and Salem is going to be pretty high on that list.
Unfortunately we actually have things to do and lives in Salem, so we haven't diverted every resource we have toward our football stadium. Sorry.

Oh we understand, there are pigs, cows & goats to feed, eggs to collect, butter to churn and fields to tend! Ya'll some busy folk!

I kid, I kid! I'm looking forward to a possible rematch with you guys!!

Hey BR1995, I see that BR won 14-0. Did you go to the game? Was St. John's a pretty tough team? Just wondered who you would compare them to in Ohio.

Unless we figure out how to defend the pass, I don't look forward to a rematch!

I did have a lot of fun at New Phila... I dated a girl back in HS whose parents grew up in Steubenville and Wintersville, so I had played for Salem and gone to some Big Red games as well. In addition, my father played under Reno at his first ever coaching gig (assistant at United Local, early to mid 70's); it was kind of cool to bring all of that together last November. Unfortunately, Big Red only sleepwalked for one half... I was sure hoping Reno's halftime speech (or explosion) wouldn't work!

Another roadside bomb . First shot from a Salem poster . well better do than last night . Truth is we will I sure hope anyway continue to play atleast 7 home games a year . Although next year I think we are on schedule to play 6 home games . We might play Bucktel down here every year and Maybe a couple of other teams that dont have stadiums to speak of and then they get a nice paycheck to help they're program. Massillon does the same thing . I think its very smart . Salem could schedule a Cleveland city school and a Akron city school and play they're normal other 5 home games . Be careful though If you think these are automatic wins cause they are not .

Never been to Rielly stadium . I heard its nice. Many teams have no choice but to schedule 5-5 . unless you want to pay a city school some money but then you have to get butts in the seats to do that and we do .

EL did that this year. We brought in 2 Ytown teams and 1 Cleveland team. Next year is a different story though, our AD is not the smartest cookie in the jar. He signed a few home and homes, instead of signing longer contracts with city teams.

No, but Big Red is and McKeesport is a past foe this year.
Also, Big Red reserves are scheduled to play Mooney Reserves at Harding Stadium Mon. Sept.20, at 5PM.
    Cheers.

I did not make it to the game; I was forced to listen to the game on the Internet.

And as I recall we led at halftime, 10-6; too bad we let it slip away ..................... not this year though.

The field doesn't even line up with the stands!

Anyways, you can sugarcoat it if it makes you feel better and believe the game was somewhat in doubt, but everyone there knew what the outcome was going to be, just a matter of by how much.

Also, what year was Reilly Stadium built? Because I have read that Toronto hosted the first night game.

I believe Salem had lights in 1928. Big Red didn't have them until my father helped install them in 1930.

I remember going to those Booster Meetings in the cafeteria with my mom and grandfather...and chowing down on the donuts. Those were the days indeed for the Boosters...hundreds of people at the meetings, now we are lucky to get 40.

Yes, enough members that they ran 2 projectors so everyone could see the game as the coaches showed the film and commented on plays.

Big Red could have had a tarp for the old field quite some time ago. When Mount Union went to artificial turf, they stored their old tarp in my uncle's garage on Bonniview Drive behind the stadium. Alliance High School did not want it and my uncle asked if our school could use it. At the next booster meeting, I asked our coach if we could use a tarp. He snapped me off by saying thay needed more important things than a tarp. I called my uncle and told him to ask some other school. When our coach found out it was free, he appologized and said it would be ok to bring it down. But, it was too late, another high school took it.
Our coach always remembered that conversation. Later when we played Ursuline one year in that driving snow storm game, the Head Coach at that time used plastic down the middle of the field and a helicopter tried to dry out the field. I believe we lost that game 12-0. Had that other coach not snapped me off and walked away before I had the chance to mention the word free, we may have been able to play that game, and others, in better conditions. Until he died, he always spoke to me and remembered that incident.
    Cheers.

    That story doesn't surprise me.

Back in 1993 I had play clocks for the stadium for FREE...paid for by Pepsi, and the Super shot it down! I guess egos got in the way.

For real ? I hate when egos get in the way . I think play clocks are excellent . You can put play clocks up at the top of the endzone seats where the band sections are . great idea .
