I've been one of Santana's biggest critics on this site, but I believe he may be poised to have a career year. For the first time in a while the pressure of playing a new position is off.....no more moves from catcher to 3B and back....then to first or DH. There are few players who when moved out of their comfort zone defensively, don't suffer at the plate. Additionally, the addition of some bats in the lineup (the emergence of Lindor, the resurgence of Kipnis, and the addition of Napoli) may result in Carlos seeing some better pitches to hit. Combine that with his keen batting eye, and we may see the Carlos that we had hoped for the past few years.BR1986FB;1782726 wrote:I'll believe the part about Santana when I see it....

Laley23Not sure if that's legible. But check out August Fagerstroms Twitter post on Santana. Some good stuff.

BR1986FBHeard this morning that Tito is toying around with the idea of batting Santana in the leadoff spot.
-
like_thatI will believe it when I see it with santana.

iclfan2I'll take anything to not start out so shitty. I predict them not to be as good as they are getting predicted, but I am excited for this season to start. Never got into them last year after the horrendous April.

Makes some sense to me after I thought about how many walks he draws.BR1986FB;1783011 wrote:Heard this morning that Tito is toying around with the idea of batting Santana in the leadoff spot. -

Also hits doubles.BRF;1783118 wrote:Makes some sense to me after I thought about how many walks he draws.
And the speed thing is kinda mute, since he has decent wheels. But, more importantly, unless you have a sure fire guy like Lofton leading-off, why are you risking an out by stealing with the 2/3/4 hitters coming up? -
Laley23What would make me apprehensive is the lack of power the Indians have already. Now your taking a guy who has some, and hitting him in the 1 spot, where he will probably have a lot less RBI.

If no one ahead of him in the line-up is getting on base consistently it won't matter if he's hitting 4th. That's the only reason to consider hitting him at the top, because he's probably our best OBP guy (healthy Brantley aside) and in today's game the complete de-emphasis on steals/bunting takes away one of the negative externalities to having someone like Santana up top.Laley23;1783122 wrote: and hitting him in the 1 spot, where he will probably have a lot less RBI.
Of course, that's all assuming Francona can't find a decent alternative at the top. -
BR1986FBThe comments I heard about him batting leadoff were, as mentioned, that he has a decent OBP and draws a lot of walks. If they plug someone like Kipnis in the 2 hole, he hits quite a few doubles. Maybe snatch a few runs early?
I get the comments about moving the lack of power to the leadoff spot but, with that being said, I get the impression Tito could've learned something from KC and may be trying to adapt to more of a small ball approach. Any runs this offense can scrape together are at a premium. Spot someone like Kluber a 2 run lead and you're usually golden. -
Crimson streakI'm really excited to see lindor this year. The way he hit and played the 2nd half of the season was amazing. I have a feeling this year he will establish himself as one of the best young players in the MLB

HitsRusHere's a batting order to chew on...
Santana DH or 1B
Kipnis 2B
Lindor SS
Brantley Lf
Napoli DH or 1B
Uribe 3B
Chisenhall RF
Gomes C
Davis CF
Personally, I'd keep Santana in the 4 hole, and use Kip or Lindor in 1or 2 interchangeably whatever works best. -
TBone14Joe Maddon, considered by many to be one of...if not the best manager in the game, used to bat Evan Longoria lead off at times. I'm not opposed trying something different. It's not like we were scoring runs the old way. Hell, Santana might flourish batting lead off. He batted .231 last year and hit .233 with runners on base.

Laley23Almonte...smh. Actually had some hope for him to add a spark. He looked pretty solid end of last year.

iclfan280 games... Fucking loser. Who's going to start in center?

BRFMan, 80 games sure is a lot.
Time me to get ahold of Nyger, Jerry, and/or Shelley. -
HitsRusSMH. The good thing is that it may open a spot for one of the young OF prospects if they have a good spring.

I'd think Rajai Davis will play center and Veneable will be in left. Austin Jackson is still out there but no way they pony up for him.iclfan2;1783512 wrote:80 games... Fucking loser. Who's going to start in center?

TBone14Tribe chatter is slow. Not much to report though. I haven't watched anything yet...just following various Tribe sources on the Twitters. Brantley should be taking live BP soon. Santana is hitting the ball early on and Salazar has given up a hit and struck out 7 in 5 innings of work.
