Cancel the rest of spring training, the Reds are in midseason form.

I do agree with you though, I was just hypothetically speaking given Chapman's profile is a bit higher. Would you sign him to that?

Regardless, quietly, both of these guys are putting together numbers never seen before in MLB (except a few stretches from Mariano Rivera).
True, THOSE stats for Chapman are better than what Kimbrell did but those arent the end all, be all stats for a closer. Yeah, Chap does it in electric fashion but that isnt what it is all about.

Chap has been the closer for the last three seasons. Take a look at the stats in the last 3 for Kimbrel.

Kimbrel has more saves in each season, LESS blown saves (albeit just by 1) a better ERA which we can argue how important that is, more innings, more appearances than Chapman. Chap really lights it up and is exciting (kimbrel is now slouch either). W-L isnt a good stat for a closer but Kimbrel is 7-7 in the last 3, and chappy is 9-13. ERA can be blown out of proportion for a closer but man, Kimbrel is 1.61, 1.21 and 1.01 the last 3 seasons...that is lights out.

Chapman does it in a more exciting fashion, more dominating, but Kimbrel just may do it more effectively yet not as flashy

Cingrani going to the 'pen, and Iglesias will be stretched out to be a starter.

I'd be ok with that....I see Cingrani as the new generation Norm Charlton

Might as well put this in here...

Pete Rose has officially requested his ban be lifted. Manfred said he will consider it and let Pete know.

I think the pen is the best place for Cingrani. He uses so much effort on each pitch, holding his health as a starter is a problem, and he doesn't have enough effect pitches other than the fastball for a starter.

Mesoraco with 3 concussions since being a pro is very concerning, especially the last one from just a foul off the mask. I don't think he'll hold up trying to catch for more than 125 games in the regular season, and another concussion or two as a catcher would put his career at great risk.

    Seriously this thread is depressing.

Reds manager Bryan Price indicated Monday that Jason Marquis and Paul Maholm are good bets to make the team's rotation.
"The thing is, when we have veteran guys like Marquis and Maholm, you're not going to use them for one start," Price said. "If they're going to be on our team, the hope is that they're on our team for an entire season, if not longer. And that's how we have to look at that. … You can back-and-forth a young guy. You can start a game or two and then go down to the Minor Leagues or go to the bullpen and help us as a long guy. So Marquis and Maholm are looking more like long-term, start-to-finish options for us." The Reds have decided to move Tony Cingrani to the bullpen, which means there are three rotation spots up grabs with Homer Bailey (elbow) slated to begin the year on the disabled list. If Marquis and Maholm lock up two of them, that leaves Raisel Iglesias and Anthony DeSclafani to battle for one spot. Neither Marquis nor Maholm are good bets to remain in the rotation for the duration of the season even if they break camp as part of it.

    Ugh.

This season has disaster written all over it. I just knew when Bailey was "just a little behind" to start that it was never a good sign. If you are having elbow/arm/should issues to start ST then you just cannot expect disaster.

So you know what this means right with it looking all doom and gloom?
    They will probably win now....

My excitement level for a season hasn't been this low in awhile. I'll still go and follow the games but will just enjoy all the lulz the Reds will bring this year. I still laugh at the game at the end of the year where MFing Jack Hannahan had both of the Reds hits.

You cannot stop Jack, you can only hope to contain him.

But Jason Marquis? Fucking really? Jason Marquis? Maybe as a hitter.

Remember going to a Mud Hens game where he hit 3 out in one game

    Direct swipe at Votto.

In its most simple form, you goal as a hitter is to get on base without making an out. You do that, and it is a successful at bat.

Would I like JV to be a bit more aggressive when ducks are on the pond? SUre, but if he continues to get on base as much as he does....how can you really bitch too much?

I disagree with Phillips on this, but if you sift through things, he does kind of have a bit of a point. I think that with so many of the Reds hitters being streaky guys who can hit like crazy for a while and then go into an extended slump, there are times when Votto's "look for the perfect pitch" approach does need to be more aggressive. At times, when a lot of guys are struggling (or taking a day off and being replaced with one of those .210 utility guys that always seem to stick around because of "grit"), I think you'd rather have your best overall hitter be more aggressive instead of courting walks and then being stranded three straight times.

This wasn't solely a knock to Votto....this is Phillips answer to the baseball reporters questioning his putrid OB%..,.he believes zero in OB%....,his only point is that someone does have to get the hit to score the necessary runs.,.,,but his approach is simply terrible.

Some of his thoughts in that article made my eyes bleed. He has no clue.

Phillips is still butthurt Votto got the huge cash.
