I can't believe how many people tried to defend him even a year ago. He's awful.Automatik;1652316 wrote:I fucking love it. I've never been a fan of Goodell and I'm glad it's becoming obvious that he's a power hungry asshole. He might go down for this and I'm hoping for it. -
SportsAndLadyThere are a lot of media guys saying goodell needs canned for this. That would be insane.
-
thavoiceIt may have been said, but how can the commissioner get canned? Vote from the owners?
-
AutomatikI wouldn't be surprised at all if he steps down sooner than later. The outrage will only get worse.
This part really makes sound like a fuckhead and sticks out to me...
Rice gets suspended two games
People are pissed, new punishment is outlined for future offenses.... 6 games then life
Video surfaces
Rice suspended indefinitely, new rules thrown out the window.
LOL -
Con_AlmaIf he's truly power hungry no amount of outrage will make him choose to step down.
-
queencitybuckeyeGoodell's botching of this entire situation has tarnished the shield far more than Rice's actions.
-
Laley23I cannot see how Goodell rebounds from this. Complete lack of diligence. No excuse to not have access to that video, as we are seeing now.

Directly, no. If it comes down to "step down or be fired", he'll "choose" the former.Con_Alma;1652322 wrote:If he's truly power hungry no amount of outrage will make him choose to step down. -

The thing about Goodell is that he seems to be a purely reactionary commissioner where everything he does is essentially an instant reaction to something. This goes back to when, in the middle of a season, when concussion stuff was coming out particularly with former players, he instantly changed the rules concerning hitting, complete with fines and suspensions, without giving players any time to adjust. A "last week, you could hit like that, but this week, you're getting fined big for doing so" thing.Automatik;1652321 wrote:I wouldn't be surprised at all if he steps down sooner than later. I hope he gets ousted, but I bet nothing happens to him. I think people below him will take the blame and get thrown under the bus instead of him. He has plausible deniability and can just blame the people around him for not getting him the video.Laley23;1652324 wrote:I cannot see how Goodell rebounds from this. Complete lack of diligence. Yes, she is a dumbass. But yes, there are usually very complex reasons when a victim stays with her abuser.GoChiefs;1652311 wrote:Nothing complex about being a dumbass. -

When he's worth millions, it seems like one very non complex reason to stay with him.Fab4Runner;1652328 wrote:Yes, she is a dumbass. But yes, there are usually very complex reasons when a victim stays with her abuser. -

I believe I already stated that money could be a factor for her. But there are probably others. Not every victim of DV is married to a millionaire, yet they still stay.Raw Dawgin' it;1652329 wrote:When he's worth millions, it seems like one very non complex reason to stay with him. -

In this case, I think the worst part is the way the franchise was essentially Ray's accomplice in the beating. From having their meetings on the matter essentially be her, Ray and high-ranking team officials (aka: her vs. the guys); with how they trumpeted her "I regret my role in the matter" tweet, essentially having her publicly take blame for getting knocked out; with how the team's PR guy wrote a blog post on the website where he verbally blew Rice as a great guy and so on.Fab4Runner;1652328 wrote:Yes, she is a dumbass. Then add in TV network stuff, such as how, before a pre-season game, a sideline "reporter" asked Ray about what words of support his wife gave him before the game. Or promoting how much applause he got from the home crowd. But that in itself is an ugly little thing: how the national sports media, unless you're talking Deadspin, completely ignores domestic violence if the aggressor is a famous athlete. Floyd Mayweather is a total piece of shit, but because he's the main man in boxing, the boxing media only talks about how great he is in the ring. To the point where, after 50 Cent made the "I'll donate a shit ton to charity if you can read one page of Harry Potter without fucking it up" deal to Mayweather, Yahoo's Kevin Iole wrote this scathing column about how out-of-line and uncalled for 50's stuff was because Mayweather is just too great a guy to have to deal with low blows like that.
A lot of those guys can just go fuck themselves. -
HereticBut on the other hand, the sports media's unwillingness to actually tackle these issues instead of just shilling for their leagues does lead to hilarity at times. Like last night, when Chris Berman was trying to discuss the Rice stuff where you got the idea that (a) he had no desire to do so and (b) he didn't bother rehearsing anything he would say, so he basically did nothing but ramble in a stammering, unorganized way while randomly blurting out what was happening on the field. It was surreal and possibly the first time Berman has done live sports coverage where I didn't want the TV on mute for pure entertainment purposes.

That's not really choosing to step down as much as it is being forced to step down. Agreed that he won't "directly" step down if he's truly power hungry as opined above.queencitybuckeye;1652325 wrote:Directly, no. If it comes down to "step down or be fired", he'll "choose" the former. -

A beautiful example of how inept Goodell is.
Greg Hardy, who has been found guilty of domestic abuse fairly recently, has not been suspended yet. But the league did let the Panthers know his face paint was a violation of their uniform policy. Which is one of the few things they actually are effective at policing, even if no one outside league offices gives a damn. -

This surprises you how? We're talking about a team that kept a murderer on their team and actually erected a statue of him, minus his knife.Heretic;1652335 wrote:In this case, I think the worst part is the way the franchise was essentially Ray's accomplice in the beating. Yeah, they have uniform cops that check out their uniforms and everything like that..length of the towel, etc.Heretic;1652345 wrote:http://grantland.com/the-triangle/what-does-it-take-to-get-roger-goodell-fired-2/

Think Fulcher used to be the bengals uniform cop -
jmogThe fact that 2 guys mentioned in that article (1 arrested waiting trial, 1 already found guilty) played this Sunday and NO ONE is talking about it, makes me sick.
According to the rule, both guys should miss 6 games, now but we aren't hearing a word about them. -
SportsAndLadyYeah that looks horrible for the NFL.
Goodell is definitely nervous right now. You can't fuck around with DV. And they have royally fucked this up. I'm expecting a resignation soon from him. -

The one found guilty should be suspended no doubt.jmog;1652349 wrote:The fact that 2 guys mentioned in that article (1 arrested waiting trial, 1 already found guilty) played this Sunday and NO ONE is talking about it, makes me sick.

The one awaiting trial...without knowing the facts and such I think they are best to wait. I imagine the NFL has more info that we do, or that I know of. Yes, DV is a bad, bad thing but a woman can claim it without a whole helluvalotof proof and get the ball rolling. Now...if there is obvious injuries from the woman like tht MMA fighter there is no question, but it doesnt take much for a DV compaint. -

I think the brazenness is what surprised me. At least with Ray L., there was the element of "plausible deniability" where people can say, "Yeah, we know what really happened..." but there was no "in court" proof that he was anything more than an accomplice, so when they essentially were like "deal with it" and the NFL mouthpieces immediately went back to drooling over his on-field play, it essentially disappeared.BR1986FB;1652347 wrote:This surprises you how? With Ray R., there was...well, a video of him dragging his unresponsive fiance out of an elevator where you knew that something bad went down, but just didn't see one brief snippet of the proceedings. To compare it to Ray L., that guy's situation would have been "he was picked up by cops walking in a daze down a street with a bloody knife in one hand while holding the decapitated head of the victim in the other". If it wasn't so horrible, it'd be hilarious that they tried to introduce plausible deniability into a situation where there was no logical way that should exist...and they made it work for a few weeks until the "nope, none of that shit" video showed the actual KO.
