Regarding those QB's who sat for a season before playing........
How many of them had an establshed QB to sit behind?
*Palmer--Sat behind Kitna who had been a full time starter for 3 seasons prior.
*Kaepernick--Sat behind Alex Smith who had lead the team to the playoffs the season before. I also am not so certain they expected him to be the next franchise QB>
*Brady--Bledsoe. Also, No way the Pats expected a 6th round QB to become their next franchise.
*Brees--Flutie. That was his first season there, but he had played in double digit games in 4 of the 5 previous seasons. Flutie wasnt great, and obviously it was set up for brees to sit and watch.
*Manning--DId lay 9 games his first season. He replaced Kurt Warner who was previously an established starter in the league before but hadnt played much the previous two seasons. This situation was pretty much set up as Warner to start just to let Eli sit and get comfortable.
    *Rodgers--Was behind a HOF QB.
*Rivers--sat behind drew brees who wasnt bad.
*Cutler--Sat behind an established starter in Jake Plummer.
*Foles--Sat behind Vick, and established starter.
*Roethlistber wasnt mentioned and he was set to sit behind Maddox until he got a neck injury vs the ravens I believe. BR was drafted to be the franchise and was slated to sit, but even TM started 31 of 32 games the previous two sesaons and led them to the playoffs two seasons prior.

Pretty much most of the QB's you all stated had a QB who had significant NFL experience to sit behind. Some werent the greatest, but they had some measure of success over a few seasons. The browns dont have that. They dont have a QB serviceable enough to muddle through the season and let a rookie QB learn the ropes. I guess the browns have Campbell who has experience but after watching him do nothing the last half of the season i am not sure you want to go through that again, and you have Hoyer wtih a few starts in his career.

Like, I guess I understand where he is going...Im just not sure WHY?

We are pointing out QBs who have sat and had success because Sleeper said it was only Rodgers. No one was arguing against his point...lol

Russell Wilson was an unproven qb. How did that work out?

It is more of a general point about sitting QB's for a season before starting them.

Sleeper things only Rodgers was good after sitting, but other state that many QB's have sat.

But the kicker part is that most of those guys who DID sit a year had some sort of established QB with some success in the NFL for a few seasons to start in front of them while they sat and it wasnt just some hack like Cambell, or Weeden, or an inexperienced guy like Hoyer.

se-alum;1582763 wrote:That could happen. I don't see Farmer taking a QB just for the sake of taking a QB. If the guy he wants isn't there, he could very well go BPA and take a QB later in the draft. Also, as much as I like Hoyer, I think he is a guy that can get you to the playoffs, but isn't going to make you a contender for the Super Bowl, which is a bad position for a team that needs to make the next step. It's harder to draft a franchise QB when you're picking in the 20's, as opposed to picking in the top 5. They always say mediocrity is the worst position to be in for a NFL team.
The Chiefs had a few good drafts and then picked up Alex Smith in FA and instantly became contenders. That's a much more efficient model than finding a once in a generation QB by throwing away valuable early draft picks on a guess.

Nice list. Do I need to write my list again which was half assed off memory? The Browns will set themselves back another 4-5 years if we draft a joke like Manziel or Bridgewater in the first round. I'd rather bring in Vick than draft one of these punks who've never won anything.

Nice list. All of these QBs were playing behind QBs of established teams who didn't need value elsewhere. You could have sat Weeden behind any of those teams and he'd come out as one of the top QBs in the league. How about making a list of reality? You know teams that drafted a QB on a crappy team and had them sit for a year.

If we can grab Brigewater or Manziel in the 3rd or 4th round, go for it. Wilson is not the reason Seattle won the Superbowl by the way. It was Lynch and the best defense in the league which is why most of our picks need to be focused on great defensive talent.

Playoff contenders at best. They were never a threat to win the SB. A GOOD QB exposed that very quickly in the first round of the playoffs.

So, based on your logic, we should never draft a QB unless it's a once in a lifetime prospect and we happen to fall in the right spot to get him. Also I think FA in general is fools gold, signing a FA QB is the worst of them all. No team would ever allow a QB go through FA if they thought he was good enough.

I can't think of any FA QB other than Drew Brees (and he was in a unique situation with Rivers), where a FA QB worked out very well for a franchise.

There arent usually man QB's floating around in free agency who had the winning success he had, 19-5-1, in the previous two seasons.

and btw...the Chefs got him via a trade from SF.

In addition to the bolded part, I know we haven't seen the playoffs in awhile, but I also don't want to have a flash in the pan season. Yeah it would be nice to get to the playoffs, but will we really give a fuck if that meant another 10+ years mediocrity?

We aren't going to see the playoffs with Manziel or Bridgewater either. Sorry!

Maybe not immediately next year, but I can easily see both QBs as NFL playoff QBs, especially TBW.

What had Andrew Luck and RGIII ever won when they were drafted? That's a stupid argument. Every pick in the draft is a risk, but it takes risk to get a reward.
  • Lovejoy1984
Sleeper, I get what your saying. You don't necessarily love any of the QB's in the draft (neither do I), I'm also one of the few people that don't think we HAVE to take a QB. I'd rather us make a good selection regardless of the position, instead of us taking the left over QB. (Unless thats the one our Front office has targeted and lists as their guy).

I don't want to be that guy in fantasy football who HAS to take a QB early because there was a run on them, and doesn't want to be left out.

If the guy that Farmer wants is there at 4, perfect. Take him and lets see what happens. But if that guy is gone, don't just take whomever is left, just so you can say you've taken a QB. (Barring the other QB's aren't in similar positions on our draft board)

I do think we need a QB in this draft, but only if its the right guy, in the right spot.

Take it for what it's worth, but from discussions at the combine today, no way does Manziel drop to 4. Which is fine with me because I want Teddy, just passing along what I heard from my buddy down at the combine and in the know.
