Cleveland Browns Draft Talk 2010
-
devil1197TCSoup, have you gotten any indication from listenting to Holmgren himself that Mangini will be fired? From what he has said so far he doesn't like removing coaches after one year. He really hasn't given any indication that Mangini will be fired.
Now do I care, not really. I want Holmgren to run the franchise the way he wants to. He has multiple SB appearances and a trophy (two different teams). That speaks volumes to me that he can win at any place if given the time and resources. -
WriterbuckeyeI find it funny when people reference talk radio or sports pundits as their reasoning a coach will be fired.
I'm still betting Mangini will be around after his talks with Holmgren. My hope is that he (Holmgren) keeps Mangini and the defensive coaches, and tells Mangini who he wants to be offensive coordinator and the system he wants run.
Holmgren says he's an offensive guy and he doesn't care what type of defense is run. If that's truly the case, then there's no reason to keep Mangini and Ryan, and bring in your offensive coach to revamp the offense (it needs it).
If Mangini gets fired, then we are essentially throwing the progress made these past 5 weeks into the garbage and starting from scratch once again.
I'd prefer we don't have to do that since the hard work of weeding out players who don't want to play for the team (i.e. Edwards and Winslow) has been done. -
pkebkerMangini and Ryan are doing a great job transforming our Defense, but our offense needs an overhaul. Which is exactly what Holmgren will do. I don't think Mangini will have a problem running the WCO. I do believe Mangini and Holmgren will work together.

Not to mention he's terrible with form tackling. He always goes for the big shoulder hit. You're not going to knock NFL players on their asses with a big shoulder hit... Except maybe a punter.jpake1 wrote: DaBrowns- I completely agree. I think he'll go round 1 because he'll freak the combine, but I really do think there are a handful of safties I'd draft before him and I wouldn't sniff him in round 1. I think a good NFL passing game will target him and eat him alive. He's taken some of the worst angles on balls that I've ever seen in my life. But when it matters most, he'll probably take the perfect angle to Al's balls to get drafted by the Raiders. -
DaBrowns41It's sounding more and more like Mangini may get another season.

Did ya hear anything new regarding this situation??DaBrowns41 wrote: It's sounding more and more like Mangini may get another season. -

I'm just speaking by Holmgren's tone, and the fact that Mangini is going out of this season with a bang.pkebker wrote:

But while his tone seems like he may be generous to Mangini, he could easily get rid of him as well with some of the comments he's made, i.e. "It's unfair to fire a coach after 1 season.... but sometimes the NFL is not fair".
Holmgren is keeping things a mystery. It's a big guessing game regarding the GM, HC, OC, DC, QB, etc.
I'm quite curious as more stories develop following the seasons end, and post-Super Bowl.
I think a GM will be hired before the Super Bowl is played. -
jordo212000I'd say Daboll is probably a goner, but other than that I think most of the coaching staff will be back.

Now Holmgren mentioned something along the lines like 'I can't hire a GM until the season is over'. Does that include the Super Bowl, or can they begin their hiring process immediately following this Sunday?DaBrowns41 wrote:

He said this because they cannot interview candidates that are still playing or are still competing in the playoffs. ie:Tim Heckert...I hope!pkebker wrote:

TigerNation10It's Tom Heckert. He is the GM for the Eagles.
-
pkebkerWhy do you think he would make a lateral move from the Eagles to the Browns. That doesn't seem like a good career move to me...
-
FidmeisterWith the Eagles, Andy Reid is the one picking the players and pulling the strings.
In Cleveland, Heckert would be. -

I doubt it...with Holmgren and potentially Mangini, the GM most definitely not have the last say on player personell. He would simply give advice.Fidmeister wrote: With the Eagles, Andy Reid is the one picking the players and pulling the strings.

DaBrowns41Heckert would have to have full control of the roster as well as being the GM in order for him to be allowed to make the move, unless the Philadelphia ownership gives him permission to speak to other teams and pursue a different position.
Basically, if we wanted Heckert to be our GM, we'd have to hope that a) Philly would let us interview him and give him an option to opt out of his contract and/or b) give him GM control as well as control over the 53 man roster to make it a "promotion". -
IggyPride00While he is far from the supreme being, Peter King said in his weekend picks section today for the Browns that he still thinks the odds are against Mangini keeping his job when he and Holmgren pow-wow next week.
He is about as plugged in and respected as anyone when it comes to pro football sources, so I am sure someone connected to the situation must be whispering something in his ear because he doesn't say stuff just to say it usually.
It wouldn't surprise me in the least, because while Holmgren is on record as saying he doesn't think it is fair to fire the coach after a year, in the same breath he referenced how it was necessary when Bill Parcells did it so he could properly implement whatever it is he wanted to run with his guys.
If I'm Holmgren and I plan on bringing the West Coast Offense to the Browns as well as a new O-coordinator, I am leery of heading into next season with Mangini as my coach as that is not a system he has ever run. Obviously he is familiar with it, but if for some reason the transition with Mangini in charge doesn't go well and you end up having to fire him next year, it sets you 2 more years behind because you will have killed 2010, and the first year with the new coach in 2012 is naturally a dicey proposition.
Blow it up, bring in your guys that you are comfortable with so there are no excuses, and hit the ground running.
It isn't fair to Mangini, but Holmgren needs to get his people in place on day 1 and be done with it if he thinks that is what gives his program the best chance of success. I suspect he will follow the Parcells blue print of cleaning house to surround himself with guys he has had success with in the past. -
DaBrowns41I'd prefer Holmgren to just be comfortable with those around him, and establish an organization that he wants to be around.
I could care less about Mangini's feelings and things be fair or unfair. It's a business. If Holmgren keeps Mangini, then he better be committed to him and not doing it because it would be "unfair to fire a coach after 1 season". -

Mangini HAS run a WCO before. He ran a WC style offense when Brett Favre was QB, because that's what Favre is so familiar with. Also, Mangini is more of a defensive guy, he has said he would have no problem running the WCO. We simply need to hire an OC who runs the WCO.IggyPride00 wrote: While he is far from the supreme being, Peter King said in his weekend picks section today for the Browns that he still thinks the odds are against Mangini keeping his job when he and Holmgren pow-wow next week.
