I am actually hoping that Chud has some strong input. Desperate times....IggyPride00;1369155 wrote:If he's not it means Joe Banner is, which to me is an equally terrifying prospect.
We have turned the personnel department over to a bean counter and a guy who has been out of football for 5 years with a poor track record of talent evaluation. -

The hire. -
Mr MiyagiTime to change this thread title to " we wanted the Lombardi trophy but all we got was Mike Lombardi "

Mr MiyagiFormer Arizona Cardinals Def Coordinator Horton seems to be the front runner for the same position. ........He has always run a 3-4.....wash, rinse, repeat

I can see frustration from Haslam within 5 years and him attempting to move this team due to "lack of fan interest" that he brought on himself by hiring these two knuckleheads.IggyPride00;1369155 wrote:If he's not it means Joe Banner is, which to me is an equally terrifying prospect.

Mr MiyagiWasn't part of the deal with Lerner is that Haslam wouldn't move the team, or was that just a gentlemens agreement that could be voided?

I would love to have been a fly on the wall for the conversation where Joe Banner explained to Haslam that Mike Lombardi really was the absolute best talent evaluator out there to hire for the GM role that Banner neutered.BR1986FB;1369175 wrote:I can see frustration from Haslam within 5 years and him attempting to move this team due to "lack of fan interest" that he brought on himself by hiring these two knuckleheads.
Wouldn't Jamarcus Russell have been enough to make Haslam question whether this is really the guy we want to entrust to build us a championship team?
Every exec misses on talent at some point, but that is the biggest bust in NFL draft history.
Surely someone like Haslam would have to see that all that coupled with his toxic relationship with the Cleveland fans and media make this hire a disaster waiting to happen? -

The Russell pick is bad but it's just the tip of the iceberg. His "evaluations" of players along with the Craig Powell's, "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell's, Robert Gallery's, etc being drafted are more than cause for concern.IggyPride00;1369194 wrote:I would love to have been a fly on the wall for the conversation where Joe Banner explained to Haslam that Mike Lombardi really was the absolute best talent evaluator out there to hire for the GM role that Banner neutered.

Banner is basing Lombardi's "body of work" off of the 1998 draft, when they worked together and "hit" on 2 out of 8 picks (both picks were their first two draft picks). -
SportsAndLady^again, every gm in the NFL would have taken Russell in that position.

CLEconomically Speaking
The switch to the 3-4 IS NOT that big of a deal. Anthony Spencer gets signed as a FA and Jones or Mingo gets drafted. There's your two outside guys. Solid group of young LB to shuffle in and pair with DJ on thr inside. The missing guy on the 4-3 line disappears with that slot. Now you have a solid D-line with depth and linebackers are no longer a glaring hole. Pick up LaRon Landry at FS and find a CB (FA, 3rd round pick, take a chance on matheiu in a late round?) Pair these personell moves with Hortons coaching and weve got a top 10 defense next yearMr Miyagi;1369173 wrote:Former Arizona Cardinals Def Coordinator Horton seems to be the front runner for the same position. ........He has always run a 3-4.....wash, rinse, repeat -

Not in his scenario. We sign FA Spencer and draft Mingo or Jones. Is Sheard a backup or is he traded because he's too light in the pants to play 3-4 DE.Mr Miyagi;1369241 wrote:Sheard is going to be trying to learn pass coverage -

Would Taylor play end or NT? Everything i have heard is that he would make a great NT but that Rubin wouldnt make a great end and we just signed him to his contractBR1986FB;1369249 wrote:Not in his scenario. Taylor would play DE. Rubin to NT. Taylor has been compared, in stature & athleticism, to Haloti Ngata. He's athletic enough to play the end. I'd imagine the other DE would be a rotation of Winn and possibly a re-signed Jaqua Parker. Hughes would work into the rotation somehow.Mr Miyagi;1369254 wrote:Would Taylor play end or NT? They would be completely fine at D-Line and the two ILB spots (assuming DQ & Gocong). The pass rushing OLB's is what they'd need to fix.
As CLE mentioned, the transition to 3-4 wouldn't be as dramatic as many think. The key to any 3-4 though is that space eating hog NT and OLB's that can get to the passer. I personally prefer the 4-3 but that's only because we've never had the personnel (i.e. stud rush linebackers) to make it aggressive and exciting to watch. -
Pick6jesus christ I cannot deal with all the "world is ending" bullshit. Haslam is moving the Browns now? SMFH.
Switching to the 3-4 is hardly a problem at all. Sign or draft a pass rusher and you are basically set. -

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/63916/browns-hiring-lombardi-makes-no-sense[h=1]Browns hiring Lombardi makes no sense[/h]I didn't think the Browns made the right move when they fired general manager Tom Heckert 19 days ago. Now, that move is even more puzzling with the announcement that the Browns have hired Mike Lombardi as their vice president of player personnel.
Replacing Heckert with Lombardi makes no sense. Heckert had rebuilt the Browns' roster, laying a foundation with the likes of Joe Haden, Phil Taylor, Trent Richardson, T.J. Ward, Jabaal Sheard and Josh Gordon. Lombardi was an analyst for the NFL Network who hadn't worked full-time for an NFL team since 2007. If Lombardi was the top choice to be the de-facto general manager, the Browns should have kept Heckert.
The decision to go with Lombardi over Heckert once again makes you think that this is the old regime and not the new one. Mike Holmgren got blasted when he selected "his guy" Pat Shurmur as coach. Chief executive officer Joe Banner is doing the same thing with "his guy" Lombardi. You'll hear stories about how Patriots coach Bill Belichick respects Lombardi so much that they still talk about teams leading up to games. But my question is why Belichick wasn't the one hiring Lombardi.
The reason why Lombardi is with the Browns is because of his relationship with Banner. He worked with Banner in Philadelphia where he helped run the draft in 1997 and served as director of pro personnel in 1998. Banner regards Lombardi as one of the smartest personnel executives he's ever worked with.
One reason I'm skeptical of this move is Lombardi's assessment of the Browns. As an analyst, Lombardi was critical of Heckert's Trent Richardson-Brandon Weeden draft, calling it a "panic disaster." He also blasted the supplemental draft pick of Gordon as a "wasted draft pick," which could prove out to be Heckert's best pick in terms of value. Now, the pressure will be on Lombardi to do a better job than Heckert.
As much as the Browns' hiring of Rob Chudzinski was surprising, the addition of Lombardi was far from it. It was first speculated in August, and Banner refused to comment on it. It's now a reality and I'm still trying to understand why. -
Pick6If Banner/Lombardi can find us at the very least, an average NFL QB, I will consider him more successful than Heckert.
