I am still cautiously optimistic, because of last year, but I agree with this post. They know their lead after 1/4 of a season doesn't mean shit this time around, so hopefully they remain focused.
Agreed. Maybe it's because I am too harsh, but I feel like they haven't been playing well at all, so it is nice for them to be in first by 4 games. I still think some of the guys in the lineup can do much better than what they are batting now. I am also still worried about strikemore. I know we joke about him ruining the chemistry, but seriously, he can be a rally killer with his strikeouts.grodt;1180209 wrote:Last year felt like everything was going perfectly, and when that stopped they tailed off. This year, not everything is clicking just yet but they are still in first place. This year there is definite room for improvement in some areas.

It's not macho to admit that, and he wandered around that topic and went into different areas...
But when he talked about the cheers he received Tuesday, you could hear his voice crack a bit. That meant something to him. Bet he feels the same away again tonight.[/h] -

I thought the same thing looking at their infield tonite....range=0.
I forgot how fat and slow Detroits infield is. Peralta up the middle and Cabrera and Fielder at the corners........not much range with those guys
-

FootwedgeTribe needs to keep McCallister in the rotation. He's been solid. In my book, he didn't allow an earned run tonight.

Classyposter58Ugh bases loaded!! That is all.
On a sidenote idk about you guys but it seems like Leyland never has a sense of urgency and you gotta love it. He just gets it. Just watch a horse race as its not the guy who leads the whole race but the one that breaks with 35% to the end and blows by everyone to victory. It seemed last year like the Indians got burnt out by the time we hit the dog days, Detroit was just getting going. If Porcello and Scherzer can start pitching well watchout
The Indians have one big ray of hope that they don't collapse and that they have a shot. Simply they get on base. Do you realize they're 4th in the MLB behind St. Louis, Texas and LA and do you know why? They have generated an unreal 190 walks this season. They don't have the firepower but can still wear down pitchers with such great plate discipline. However their pitching is actually not good at all, terrible WHIP despite a terrific defense. I just think the inability to get extra base hits(bad slugging pct) and high ERA and WHIP could do them in
The Tigers obviously have offense. Jackson is hitting amazingly, and Cabrera and Fielder need no explanation. They're 10th in AVG and they've really hit the ball just okay. This definitely is a team that when hot like Opening Week can slug past everyone and easily rattle off 6-7 wins. The thing is they can't field, and can't really run. In essence they'll live and die by streakiness and hopefully they start living by it -

The Tribe has 79 doubles. 10 more than Detroit. Detroit, despite their powerful line up, only has 7 more home runs than Cleveland. Each team has 7 triples. So where exactly did you get the Tribe lacks the ability to get XBH?Classyposter58;1180347 wrote:Ugh bases loaded!! That is all.

Cleveland has the 2nd best OBP in the American league and leads the majors by far in walks drawn. Our team ERA is 4.01 and Detroit's is 4.17... Our WHIP #'s are inflated because of Ubaldo and Masterson. However, opponents are only batting .245 against our staff and a full 15 points more against Detroits who is sitting at .260... Cleveland starters have also thrown 15 more innings in the same amount of games, so it's telling me that our starts have been more consistent and are able to record QS while Detroit hasn't had that luxury...
Now, fielding. An important stat that is often overlooked. Cleveland is 5th in the AL. Detroit is 11th. Cleveland has a .988 F% Detroit has a .981
Detroit has 29 errors, Cleveland only has 20. Cleveland has far less errors and a much better F% while having more than 100 more chances than Detroit, despite the same amount of games played.
The numbers definitely aren't as skewed as you tried to make them be. Our pitchers are also much better at holding the opponents power numbers down as Detroit's staff has given up more homers and total bases... Not to mention Jose Valverde is not the same as he was last season. -
hoops23These guys are overreacting a bit, but it's still good for the lulz

IMO there is a big difference between the Tribe team of last year and the Tribe team this year. At this time last year it seemed like they were getting all the breaks, winning in walk-off fashion every night, and they were kinda playing off their emotional high and letting it carry them to victories. Once the injury bug hit and they started slumping, they came back down to reality. But this year, they know they are capable of contending and winning in their division and it seems like their confidence level is comparable to that of a winning team. Younger players like Kipnis, Brantley, Pestano, etc. are finding their roles and fitting into them quite well. They aren't playing "unbelievable" ball like last year, but they are doing the small things right that win games. Even Acta said they haven't even played their best ball yet, but they're still winning. They aren't a team that will score 10 runs a game, so they know they have to play smart baseball and find ways to get on base and get runs home.
This Tribe team is the real deal. Putting Choo at leadoff and sliding Brantley down has proven to be a great move so far. Lowe is having a magical season. Ubaldo is sucking it up and he still has five wins. They just find ways to get it done without that feeling of "luck" which accompanied most of the games early last year. I don't think this team will fizzle out mid-year like the previous year, but they will keep on winning. Of course they will have some slumps, like even the greatest of teams have, but this team is built to win right now.
I am a little worried about the return of Sizemore though. It will be nice to be able to get Damon/Duncan out of the lineup and finally have a pretty solid outfield, but I just hope Grady doesn't screw up anything offensively. Personally I would keep the top of the lineup how it currently is and put Grady down in the 6 or 7 spot until/if he proves he can hit better than the guys at the top now. We don't need him striking out in the top of the order.
Roll Tribe! Let's get Verlander for the sweep and come out of this series 6 ahead of the Tigers! -
BR1986FBWell done, gents. Now get out the broom on Verlander !
-
Crimson streakExpect a line up of all leftys today against verlander. Except Lopez.
As for classyposter... I've said since they signed fielder that it doesn't make them better because victor meant so much to the tigers last year. He lead the majors with 2 out rbis. Add in a worse bullpen and verlander more than likely wont repeat last years performance. Also the tribes 2 best pitchers have 5+ eras and once they get back on track it will only make them that much better -
wes_mantoothWas at the game last night and had a blast.....
But, I don't want to hear them bitch about attendance anymore..lol I have a quick story...
We went to Wilberts before the game to grab a beer. After the Tigers batted in the first, we went to cash in our vouchers for tickets. We waited in a line that is twice as any line you would see at cedar point....eventually, the Tribe brought out tables and started selling handfuls of tickets for cash only. We put our vouchers away and just grabbed some of these tickets. So, that put us inside the stadium around the 3rd inning. Then, before we sit down, we get in a huge line for hot dogs....we waited around an hour or so(half of it was after we had paid and were just waiting in a corner for our dogs). By the time we had our dogs and watching the game....it was the 7th inning..lol.
I have never seen something as disorganized as what that stadium was yesterday...it was insane. Still had a great time, but they have a bunch of dumbasses running things there. -
Glory Daysif they were smart, they wouldnt fuck with too much when Sizemore comes back. start him at DH for a few games when Hafner needs an off day, maybe put him in left to fill in for Damon a couple games. but do it slow, dont start moving shit around right away.

Fielder was a great addition, but everyone was acting like Fielder was going to add 10 more wins to a team that already won about 94 games last year.Crimson streak;1180374 wrote:Expect a line up of all leftys today against verlander. Except Lopez.

This is because they had one of the largest walk up crowds in recent years...I believe it was 6,400 walk up. With the lower routine attendance as of late, you can't staff for 40% more than pre-sale tickets even in big series'. Last night's attendance I think was 22,000 making pre-sale around 15,600.wes_mantooth;1180392 wrote:Was at the game last night and had a blast.....

My main issue was the fact that we waited 30 minutes for our food AFTER we ordered. We watched people behind us order, get their hot dogs and then walk on by. The cashier who was taking care of us was zero help. She just kept shrugging and saying "I am waiting on them to bring them to me". Um...how about you walk over and grab some hot dogs? Finally, we told the girl at the register next to us what was going on (after our cashier disappeared for a while) and she was more proactive about helping us.Con_Alma;1180430 wrote:This is because they had one of the largest walk up crowds in recent years...I believe it was 6,400 walk up. I completely understand. Its a reasonable concern. The Indians will need to know the food stand you were at. The Indians contract with Delweare North to manage their concessions. That company then trains volunteers who receive a portion of the proceeds in each respective stand. If those volunteers are not giving you a great experience then both the Indians and Deleware North need to hear about it.Fab4Runner;1180451 wrote:My main issue was the fact that we waited 30 minutes for our food AFTER we ordered. 1. Most Tigers fans I know in Toledo hate Leylands approach and think he shouldve been fired after 2009. They really want him gone after this start.Classyposter58;1180347 wrote:Ugh bases loaded!! That is all.

2. The Tigers offense is as good as it gets, 1-4. But they have more holes in that line-up after the top 4 than the Tribe. You got career years from Peralta, Boesch and Avila. Those guys are gonna regress. Then Santiago?? Delmon Young?? The line-up isnt that much more impressive than the Tribes. If Kipnis can hit at a .275 clip and Choo has an OPB around .380, I would argue the Tribes lineup 1-9 is better than Detroits and the top 5 would be close as well.
3. Pitching for Detroit is Verlander and Fister. Those 2 are very good. Porcello sucks. Stop thinking he will magically turn it on. Its been like 5 fucking years, the kid sucks. Scherzer is the same. He is what he is. Unhittable, or 7 runs in 3 innings. Cant count on him, and he has historically been worse that better. You dont even have a 5th starter, do you? Indians starters arent anything to write home about, but 1-5 they are pretty solid. No true 1 or 2 like Detroit, but a lot of depth. I think 3-5 we are better than most teams, despite lacking in the 1-2 spot.
4. Bullpen goes to the Tribe. ERAs may be the same, but look at the guys that matter. Pestano, Smith and Perez for the Indians, with a solid combo of leftys in Hagadone and Sipp. All better than both of Detroits set-up men in Coke and Benoit (what happened to him, used to be lights out?). Valverde always had issues in Houston and Arizona, not this bad, so I think he will right the ship. But 49/49 was a complete fluke. He always seemed to be top 10 closers, but around double digits in BS each year. -

Uhm, you do realize that once Victor gets back a lineup with Victor, Miggy, Fielder is better than just Victor and Miggy right? Just because Victor's injured now doesn't mean he'll stay that way, I don't see how you can possibly say signing Fielder doesn't make them better. Does Fielder make up them better in Victor's absence? No, but long term they're better.Crimson streak;1180374 wrote: I've said since they signed fielder that it doesn't make them better

Leyland is a great postseason manager though, you can't deny that. His moves alone gave them a shot at the pennant last season.
Valverde is still great and is only year off one of the best seasons in closer histoy.
