    This, to me, is the key. Not catering to some pitch count "formula." We obviously weren't in the dugout but if Masterson felt good, he could've been sent out in the 9th. It's about getting the WIN, not sticking to some formula.

    Whether you like it or not, that's what it's like in today's game. Every manager would have made the same move in game #1. Leading 4-1, you expect your closer to be able to nail the save.

    If Acta can be blamed for anything, it's going to Perez in the first place. Should have been Pestano.

    This. It might have already been mentioned, but Roy Halladay was pulled yesterday after 8 innings after having thrown only 92 pitches in a 1-0 game. This is a guy that consistently throws 225+ innings a year.

    Acta's only mistake was trusting that Perez was 100% back from his injury.

    That's true but the bottom line is we didn't get the win. Perez threw 35 pitches in a game the whole spring...he threw that many in the 9th yesterday....not once did someone get their ass off the bench to even go out and talk to him, especially when the tying run came to the plate. There were a lot of different ways to have handled the end game, and Acta did nothing to hedge his bet. I actually have less of a beef with his handling of this, then the 12th inning debacle. There just simply was no excuse for Druby swinging at the first pitch. None.

    Some teams go a whole season without blowing a 3 run lead in the ninth...especially at home. (see Detroit last year).

    Acta let that one get away....end of story. How he could sit in th dugout and watch Perez get smoked by 2 batters and just sit there defies logic. But then again, I saw him do it last year too.

    I don't care what Perez gets paid or what his "title" is. If you'
    re given the ball ih the ninth...and you start stinikin up the joint, you are going to be pulled, period.

    The fact is...both Pestano and Smitty had been lights out in spring training. I would not have put Perez in that game for a number of reasons.

    As to Masterson's pitch count....I understand the logic of pulling him. He probably hadn't thrown more than 65 pitches per outing. had it been 2-1....I probably leave him in for the ninth. But for Perez to blow a 3 run lead like that...inexcusable. And I blame Acta for not wanting to win the game...an opener, with 43,000 paying customers.

    I say bring back the human rain delay guy to manage this team.

    Going forward, I want to see Perez in in the seventh, not the ninth...until he gets his hsit straight.

    My issue with Acta wasn't bringing Perez in, it was how much rope he gave him to hang himself. It's understandable to blow a 1 run save once in awhile, but I don't give a shit if he's the "closer" or not, no reliever should ever be allowed to single-handedly blow a 3 run lead. He should have been yanked.

    Oh god.. Perez in the 7th would probably be even worse. I'd rather see him traded for a prospect.

    This. This is what my issue is, not that he pulled Masterson.

    My other issue is, NOBODY ever went to even try and calm Perez down. He was all over the fucking place.

    No thanks. If he couldn't get it done with those stacked lineups in the 90's he sure as Hell wouldn't be getting it done now. Besides, with his lefty/righty philosophy he's no better than Acta. His formula/matchup baseball probably cost them the 97 WS.

    You can't blame him for 97. All the blame goes on Jose Mesa. That team had it in the bag until that POS blew the game.

    Good article. No team should have a "closer". Unless they in fact have a "closer". Rivera is a closer. JoBo was not a closer and neither is Perez.

    Mesa gets the blame, but Hargrove does get an assist. Just like yesterday, Hargrove put in Mesa...a very cold pitcher over the last month of that season.

    Just like Acta, Grover did not have the balls to leave the 8th inning pitchers in.

    L on L...and R on R have proven statistics behind the thinking. Why else would anybody become a switch hitter? I do blame Hargrove for the 97 ninth inning...because Mesa blew ass at the end of that year.

    But I would take Grover over Acta any day of the week.

    Baseball is in fact a game of percentages. Because of computers, nobody sacrifice bunts anymore...because it is a proven losing proposition...like hitting on 16 in Vegas.

    ^^^games can be won or lost at a lot of places. I always attributed the loss to Sandy Alomar( carrying the insurance run in the top of the ninth) not hustling and jogging home assuming Renteria was going to go for the DP. Alomar didn't slide and was easily tagged out.
    But that was just me. It is tough to rag on Sandy for that after he carried the team in the playoffs and the regular season.

    Yet, it is true.

    You can look back and say what should or shouldn't have been done, but the bottom line is that we should have won that one. Shoulda coulda .......Tribe 2012.
