Merrill Hoge blasts Tim Tebow on Twitter

I don't really remember what he was saying in detail, but he talked for probably about 5 straight minutes about Tebow; he's watched and studied every game he's been in since a junior at UF, including his pro games and any practice tape he could get ahold of. He explained his throwing motion, his lack of accuracy, his "I can do it myself" attitude that will not work in the NFL (as an example he said he had game tape of a game last year in which Denver was in the redzone and Tebow was mic'ed up and went to McDaniels on the sideline and said "no one runs the ball but me".

When I first heard Hodge's tweets and remarks about Tebow I, too, thought it was very harsh. But when I heard him explain it this morning, I changed my perspective. The guy can't just go on air and say "Tebow is a nice guy." He needs to go on air and say what he has seen in his evaluations, and in his opinion, Tebows' accuracy stinks.

That makes sense. Using twitter to deliver a message sometimes works both ways. He probably generated a lot of interest in his appearances by throwing that stuff out there on twitter - if you were already watching M&M or knew he was going to be on. Hell, for that matter, it may have earned him some appearances. But at the same time, there are probably a lot of people who only got that serving so the story isn't about what he's really trying to report, but how he bashed Tebow.

I don't think he was wrong about anything and I assume if given time he could explain his opinion in more depth (as you say he did on M&M). The twitter comments out of nowhere just seemed to have the tone of someone who was pissy at Tebow personally for some reason.

Tebow then ran for a TD and won the game didn't he?

No, I know as much about Tebow as Hoge does. I just don't see Hoge's point of bashing him after Orton is already named the starter. Hoge is just after publicity.

    Ha ha.

I do wonder if Tebow is in the middle of one of those major media turns. I'll admit I said "what the fuck?" when I heard it is possible he's going to be the starter. I'm a huge fan and I wouldn't write him off, but the fundamental things that people point out are true. Now that some of the experts have already been wrong about his draft position, the possibility of his being elevated to a starter so soon (when a lot of people said it would never happen) may be compounding that feeling of stupidity. If you were a guy who doubted him, you probably don't want this to get off the ground. I don't watch much of Mel Kiper, but I've seen a few of his fits when he was wrong.

Anyway, Denver will have to live with the results. At least if he does get the chance this year the I-told-you-so's will be resolved one way or the other more quickly.

lol, raw raw. What an idiot.

I don't get why anyone would be fired up if Tebow is named the starter instead of Orton (which we now know is not the case). It is not as if someone is saying Tebow is going to start over Aaron Rogers, Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Kyle Orton is a mediocre NFL QB that will serve as a journeyman throughout his career. If an organization sees promise in any other QB for the long term (even if his name is not Tebow) they would be fool not to explore it.

Maybe I missed it, but who said that?

Besides SOS putting those words into peoples mouths, obviously.

Tebow is kidding himself if he thinks he's a starting QB in the NFL. I'd take Pryor over Tebow any day, yes that Pryor.

Hoge is probably right, but he really seemed to pile it on. That's a pretty rough criticism! Haha.
  • Thinthickbigred
I like Tebow I hope he makes it ,but Merrill is just doing his job

Hoge was responding to a question regarding Tebow's accuracy..he said it was awful. That's his job. It's not his job to "take it easy on people", this is the NFL.

John Elway is trying to throw this season on purpose so he can get Andrew Luck

It's fucking disgusting....If i was Quinn or Tim I would request a trade right fucking now

Did I say Tebow should start? No. I'm not crying about Hoge to "take it easy on people", I just said Tebow will keep working. Hoge's job is to get attention. Viewers, ESPN ratings, etc. Sensational journalism hack job is all it was. Got lots of attention, just like the reaction to Channing Crowder's hype on his radio show when he mentioned "hypothetically" selling jerseys at UF. That word spread across hater nation like an Arizona wildfire. Haters gonna hate, trolls gonna troll.

And get laughed at? One guy is near-worthless, the other is entering his second year in the league and has yet to prove anything that says he wasn't overrated by Denver's front office during draft day.

Browns will get Andrew Luck. Heckert's lack of activity in free agency smacks of "playing for next year." You don't build a team through free agency but there were some young pieces out there that could've upgraded this team a bit.

I think the Cincinnati will compete for Luck as well

Worst teams, imo, will be Cincy, Cleveland, Buffalo & Carolina and Buffalo may be decent. The rest are likely abortions.

I'm sure your views on the "journalism" covering OSU's violations were the same.

You can't "keep working" on accuracy. If you listened to what Hoge said, you'd realize he addressed this issue and acknowledged that Tebow is one of the hardest workers he's ever seen. But you simply cannot change how accurate you are.

Come on...plenty of players have put up huge college numbers in a system completely different than an NFL system. And they almost always fail in the NFL. You can't improve your accuracy. He's not accurate. Hoge had every right to call his accuracy awful.
