2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup

    That is fucking terrible.

Well, we won. I guess that means it was a good game? Right?

USA is playing Jamaica right now.

Lineup is pretty screwey it seems. USA already almost gave up an ugly goal. Altidore is hurt now, not good.

What channel is this game on? You would think the U.S. Soccer Federation (whatever its called) would get the Gold cup on a station where everyone can watch the games. How the hell do you expect to promote the sport if it's on a channel that not everybody gets.

It's on Fox soccer or something. It is 318 on Time Warner in NEO. I think there is no doubt that Clint Dempsey is the best player on the US squad. Has had some really close chances already.

    I stand by my statement.

I agree with you, I think I complained about it on the front page too. Fox must have bid the highest for it, but its kind of absurd a major network didn't bid higher. I guess it goes to show that none of them think they would make much on it?

That would have been a beautiful goal on the bicycle kick by Dempsey, just over the top bar though.

USA 1 Jamaica nil (50th minute)

Ugly goal but I will take it.

Jamaica is now playing a man down with a red card.

USA 2 Jamaica nil (80th minute)

That was a great goal by Dempsey. US had several chances and came up empty. So that was big.

I think I'd rather have Agudelo out there than him at this point, but I hope it doesn't keep him out for an extended time that would cause him to miss any club matches.

Hoping for a rematch with Panama.

its rematch panama v usa on wed

Tejada's had a flair for the dramatic. 90th minute goal to win the group against Canada, and 89th minute to send it to extra time today.

Agreed. I think that the style the USMNT played today was quite effective with the lone striker. Jozy isn't the best when he has to play the lone striker position, and I think Agudelo played fine today in that position. Moving ahead in this tournament, I'd love to see more of the 4-2-3-1 with Agudelo at the top.

In other soccer news, the US U-17 team dominated the Czech Republic yesterday 3-0 to win their opening game at the U-17 WC.

Really? I had no idea the U-17 WC was going on. I feel like that tournament occurred just 2 years ago, or was that u-21 (Ghana beat Brazil in the finals)?

Ghana beat Brazil in the U-20 world cup. But you're right, the U-17 happens every two years. Switzerland beat Nigeria in 2009 for the title, in Nigeria. The US finished fourth in 1999, their best finish to date. That team had Donovan, Onyewu, Beasley, Beckerman, Convey.

The U-20 WC happens every 2 years as well, and is coming up at the end of July in Colombia. The US didn't qualify after losing to Guatemala in the CONCACAF quarterfinals.

Edit: Just found the list of players that have played for U-17 and registered a cap with the MNT: Freddy Adu, Jozy Altidore, DaMarcus Beasley, Kyle Beckerman, Michael Bradley, Bobby Convey, Landon Donovan, Eddie Gaven, Omar Gonzalez, Eddie Johnson, Justin Mapp, Chad Marshall, Dax McCarty, Oguchi Onyewu, Heath Pearce, Santino Quaranta, Robbie Rogers, Jonathan Spector and Danny Szetela.

So, there's an OK chance you're watching 1-2 future men's players on this team.

It was live on ESPNEWS last night. Not sure how often they play that WC but it would make sense if its every two years or so. Else you would miss many players coming up.

I'll be watching the game on DVR tonight. I have a camp that goes up until 7:30pm.

I hope they don't lay an egg again against Panama. That game was rather embarrassing.

They need to get out of the "USMNT habit" of starting poor and having a halfway decent second half. I thought the Canada game was the first game I've seen in quite a while where we started out hot (4 corners in the first 15 minutes?!). I hate seeing us either concede or almost concede goals in the first 5-15 minutes -- as noted we did the same against Jamaica.

A team that is trying to find an "identity," I would hope that one identity they would want to change is the way they start the games...
