september63Nice opening day start Volquez!!

thavoiceDidnt see the WP....any chance he looked like he got crossed up? That can make it look bad for a catcher on some PB

Woulda loved to see Bruce get a shot at it.
Me, too! I think Braun would have been DOA. -

No. Even the TV guys kinda got on him for the lack of effort. -
sherm03Glad to see that Joey is picking up right where he left off.

thavoiceArticle in the USAToday talked how hitting was down last year with .95 hr/game. Think that was per team I presume. Some pitchers said they expect MLB to do something to change the downtrend in HR and runs and call the zone smaller, or juise the balls.
.....and there are 5 HR today........at a time when the bball doesnt particularly carry too well. -

Electronic balls and strikes would do the trick and show how well the best hitters know the true strike zone, although they would be complaining about the higher strikes that would be called compared to how the umps call them. Umps give too much wide and not enough high.thavoice;730093 wrote:Article in the USAToday talked how hitting was down last year with .95 hr/game. Think that was per team I presume. thavoiceI have been saying that for a number of years. Of course the electronic system wouldnt go by what the official book says but would be adapted to the current zone.
Some stadiums used to use the wiztech (sp) and umpires hated it. It waas only in some places and the umps changed how they called games to satisfy the system. I think there is a new system in all the parks now for grading purposes. I would love to see thsoe results. -

If they went to that I'd say raise the strike zone by a half inch a season until it is called by the book. I'd love to see those results, too. -
mhs95_06Gomes can't lay off the breaking ball off the plate. Jonny please go to RF with two strikes in a situation like that where a HR is not what you should be targeting as the lead-off hitter down 3 runs late! Last year you were at your best when you'd go to RF some of the time.

BCBulldogYou have Heisey available and you use Cairo instead??
-
mhs95_06Bad call by the ump on called strike two put Cairo behind the 8-ball, eventually getting fooled by a FB over the outside corner, following a show me fastball off the plate. He was expecting the nasty slider right out there breaking off the plate and it was actually the fastball.

I agree with using the more experienced hitter there. -

Didn't really understand that either. -

The numbers don't bear that out though. Heisey hit .100 higher with four HRs to Cairo's zero last year. Heisey's OPS as a pinch hitter is 1.116, Cairo's is .584. Plus, you can double switch Gomes out if you want to gain a defensive edge. It just doesn't make sense to me. -
mhs95_06Saving Heisey for the 9th with 2 in, 2 out, and the bases loaded, plus using Cairo there leaves you and infielder, an outfielder, and a C on the bench.
-
mhs95_062-0 pitch to Rolen tailed just enough to catch the very edge of the plate!
-
SportsAndLadyExcellent decision to call BP safe at 3rd.
Come on Bruce!! -
mhs95_06No way Brandon was out of the baseline on that! Greed got to McGehee. You have to get an out on that!
-
se-alumBALLGAME!!!!!!
-
mhs95_06Didn't need Heisey! I said if Volquez got the bunt down, the Reds would win!
-
brutus161RAMON MOTHERFUCKIN' HERNANDEZ!!!!!!!!!!

se-alumHow about that effort by Ramon!!

chicago510Wow. No way the Reds deserved that game. Magic continues.
