gport_tennisIs billups actually going to new York? I read that he would not go anywhere and force a buyout

I agree that eventually the Knicks will need more size, but let's look at the competition in the east right now:
Miami - no center
Boston - Kendrick Perkins. He isn't going to beat anyone.
Chicago - Noah - Not a big concern
Orlando - obviously causes problems to more teams than just the Knicks
Atlanta - Horford
There really is not cause for concern, at this time.
The Knicks not having true center will not be their problem. Playing defense and Mike D'antonio's system will be. Phoenix had loads and loads of talent when D'antonio was there but never even made it to the Finals once. They are assembling his Phoenix like team in NY, all offense no defense. -

You are absolutely correct in that it will come down to defense. However, I think Amare gets a bad rap for his defense. It might not be great in the regular season, but he has actually played decent defense in his playoff appearances. Billups is a solid defender and they now have guys like Balkman and Brewer who are above average defenders at their positions, although they lack the offensive abilities.Skyhook79;686999 wrote:The Knicks not having true center will not be their problem. Obviously the Knicks are not where they want to be, but they are heads and shoulders above where they were yesterday, and it's exciting for the NBA. -

LMAO you're joking right? Perkins is on the top 3 defenders at his position in the league, sure he isn't going to light up the stat sheet but that doesnt matter. Noah & Hordford aren't a concern? Wow. Yeah I like how all stars aren't a concern /sarcasm. -
Hb31187So now Noah is a concern? Coulda sworn 99% of people on here were saying he was a bum last year when he got under Cavs fans skin.
And having someone whos a top 3 DEFENDER at his position isnt really gonna hurt you if you dont have a Center whos very good anyways. Itd be like a wash -
thedynasty1998Perkins is an elite defender, but he's going to be guarding Turiaf, so who cares? Unlikely they will put him on Amare, because Garnett plays that position. And if the Knicks do go small with Amare at the 5, Amare is going to play more on the perimeter. Amares offensive skillset > Perkins defensive skillset
I'll take Amare all day over Noah and Horford. My point is, there is not that dominant center that people want to believe. -

No shit. The guy who brings up Noah was the biggest one downplaying his play. -

Balkman is going to be a ZERO factor on the Knicks. He has played like 18 games the last season 1/2. Billups is not what he once was and really, really didn't want to leave Denver so his heart is not in it. They might be a little better but not head and shoulders better.thedynasty1998;687020 wrote:You are absolutely correct in that it will come down to defense. I agree. Balkman won't be relied upon to do too much, but he will be a guy they use off the bench.
Billups is just a rental. They don't have plans for him long term, but he can be productive for another year. And yes, he didn't want to leave, but he seems like the ultimate pro and will play hard regardless of where he's at. I just don't think Felton was as good as many made him out to be, so they really are not losing too much with the Felton and Billups trade off. -

Prove it, bc I'd love to see this. -

What are they going to build with? Haha are you serious? Melo and Amare will be the core pieces they build around. Everything after that is fill in/role players.
The Knicks werent going to win the title this year, and they certainly werent going to win with Mozgov or Gallinari being their upper tier players. You win with stars in the NBA. Get Melo now and worry about the rest later.
Felton hurts, but Billups will do fine and besides they are replacing either of those guys with a key PG free agent here in the next year or so. -
thedynasty1998The other thing is, at this point, you might be able to find guys willing to accept less money to play alongside Amare and Carmelo in NYC. Just like the Lakers, they got Matt Barnes at a bargain, because he can compete for a championship and is in LA. The pieces will fall into piece.
Plus, Landry Fields is a very good piece to have as well. That gives you three young core guys. -

Isnt that why the NBA created the "Bird Rule"? -
jpake1Awesome trade for both teams. One of the better trades I've seen. In the NBA, if you can get an elite star, you do it. Who cares if they gave away a young core of starters? You got two starters back that are very impressive. Melo... enough said. Billups, hell yeah. I don't care if he's aging, he's still a good player and will look that much better with two studs around him. If people have learned anything the best 3 years it's this, everybody wants a piece of that stars-- and that includes free agents. People want to come to NY now. People will do what players have done with LA and Miami. NY absolutely did the right thing. The Nuggest got grrrreat value in return as well. I thought this year would be the best playoffs ever, well, they just got a bit better with NY having more star power.
-
like_thatAs soon as the Knicks get CP3 or Deron Williams, this team will be much better suited to win a title. Those positions actually fit, and in my opinion the heat won't be able to beat them in a 7 game series.
-
thedynasty1998Don't assume the Heat are done. They will get another nice piece this offseason.
-
Commander of AwesomeWho? Thay dont have any trade assets that anyone would want, I guess you could say getting Haslem back but thats about it.

The difference is that Carmelo Anthony has a skill that maybe 10 other people in the world have. All of us are replaceable in one way or another. So yes, someone like Carmelo can exploit the fact that his skill is so in-demand that he can basically dictate how the company operates.Laley23;686715 wrote:Im with you, because I look at myself and being able to choose where I look. Only difference is that they are owned by a team, and in turn also the league. I cant just tell my company to trade me to NYC cause I wanna work there. I can quit my job and go move there fine, but I wouldnt be brought back into my company. That is the difference in real work and sports. -

Someone who has made a lot of money in the league will take the MLE to sign in Miami. -

Think we have to see what kind of cap there will be. -
jpake1If the cba doesn't change much the heat will get a much improved pg or c. However I think it'll change a lot. Stern didn't want teams going into the tax to win, which is the key to titles lately. The mle just allows teams to do it every other year.

sportswizuhrdhttp://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/211261/Nuggets_Receive_Two_Traded_Player_Exceptions_One_A_League_Record_$1715M
Wow.The Nuggets will acquire two traded player exceptions in their trade of Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks, one of which will be the largest ever conveyed.
Denver originally was going to receive four traded player exceptions, but the addition of Kosta Koufos changed the equation.
The total salary of outgoing players sent by the Knicks is slightly large enough to receive the incoming players.
The traded player exception for Anthony will be worth approximately $17.15M and is greater than any other in NBA history. -
lhslep134I told you Carmelo could play defense when it mattered, as could Amare.
The defense he played on Lebron to obstruct him without fouling and allowing Amare the time to get over and block it was fantastic. -

1 game doesn't change who they are. When Melo and Amare can do it over a 7 game series then I will be impressed.
