Browns interested in Kolb?

KR1245I didnt see this posted. Probably just a rumor......
Are Cleveland Browns interested in Philadelphia Eagles QB Kevin Kolb
BEREA, Ohio -- Hours after Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid announced Michael Vick would be his starting quarterback going forward Tuesday night, the team received a call from Browns General Manager Tom Heckert about the availability of deposed starter Kevin Kolb, a radio station in Philadelphia reported.
WIP reported that the Eagles said Kolb was not available.
Then on Wednesday, Reid declined to guarantee that Kolb would be on the Eagles roster after the Oct. 19 trade deadline.
"I can’t predict anything down that far, nobody in this league can do that, that’s ridiculous," Reid said to Philadelphia media. "The future, we’ll just have to see."
Heckert was out of his office on a routine college scouting trip, said a club spokesman, and was not immediately available for comment.
A league source told The Plain Dealer there was nothing to the report.
Contacting a team about a trade happens all the time. But talking about it never does because it would violate league anti-tampering rules. So don’t expect Heckert to make a comment.
Here’s why trade conversation conceivably could continue:
• Heckert was the Eagles' GM when the team selected Kolb in the second round of the draft in 2007. Philadelphia sources said Heckert campaigned hard for Kolb in the draft room, but Reid had final say.
• Not only does Heckert have the connection to Philadelphia, Browns President Mike Holmgren and Reid are good friends from the days Reid worked on Holmgren’s coaching staff in Green Bay.
• The Browns explored trade talks with the Eagles in March when Holmgren decided to reconfigure the Browns’ quarterback depth chart. They asked about Kolb and Donovan McNabb. Holmgren said the price for both was too high — each involving the Browns’ No. 1 pick in 2010. McNabb eventually was traded to Washington for a second-round pick in 2010 and a conditional pick next year.
• By then, Holmgren had traded for Seneca Wallace and signed Jake Delhomme after Carolina released him. Now Delhomme is hobbled with an ankle injury, the extent of which the Browns have never disclosed. If the injury is serious enough to threaten Delhomme’s season, the Browns may want to re-start talks for Kolb.
• After the Eagles traded McNabb, they signed Kolb to a one-year contract extension through 2011, at a cost of a reported $10 million signing bonus. The Eagles had to pay the signing bonus. Kolb’s base salaries are $715,000 this year and $1.392 million next year.
• Vick’s contract is up after this year. So the Eagles will be in a similar position after the season as they were last spring, when McNabb’s contract was up. They have to commit to somebody. The Kolb extension obviously wasn’t a lasting commitment to him. -
TiernanGolic said "I feel sorry for Kolb...blah blah blah...etc etc" this morning on ESPN. As myself and millions of other schlubs just like me are driving to our boring dead end jobs we are told someone feels sorry for a guy who will bank $12M this year whether he ever steps on the field again this season. Take the money and smile Kolb, and hope against hope you aren't traded to the Clowns and have to play behind that OL.

That's funny because after week 2 in the NFL season the Cleveland Browns offensive line is ranked #1. This is based on sacks given up.
KR....this had already been posted in a couple of Browns threads but nobody started a separate thread about it.
BTW...I don't want Kolb. I'd prefer we draft & groom. -
Commander of AwesomeKolb on the block?
According to ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, a reliable scoop on Eagles news for years, the team fielded "numerous calls" from "several teams" inquiring about a potential deal for Kevin Kolb following coach Andy Reid's press conference Tuesday night. Radio station 610-WIP in Philly reported that the Browns were one of those teams, which seems reasonable considering Cleveland GM Tom Heckert actually drafted Kolb when he held the same position with the Eagles.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Philadelphia Inquirer went on to emphatically deny the report. Whether or not the phone call was placed Tuesday night, there's no question the Browns would be interested if the Eagles are, in fact, making Kolb available. Heckert and Browns president Mike Holmgren, a close friend of Reid, engaged in Kolb trade talks with the Eagles last March.
Just how highly does Heckert regard Kolb's talent? Three years ago, when he was considering an invitation to join the Falcons' front office, Heckert would have given Reid "whatever he wanted" for the opportunity to bring Kolb along with him to Atlanta. "A one (draft pick), a two ... two ones," said Heckert. "No joke. Kolb is legit."
Reid's initial comments on the subject Wednesday didn't exactly throw water on the fire. Asked if he could guarantee that Kolb would remain with the Eagles beyond the Oct. 19 trade deadline, Reid responded, "I can't predict anything down that far, nobody in this league can do that, that's ridiculous. The future, we'll just have to see." Queried again later in the day, Reid was singing a different tune: "No, I want Kevin Kolb on this football team."
Frankly, I don't believe a word Reid says anymore, not even "hello." He insisted early this past offseason that Donovan McNabb would be his 2010 starting quarterback. Just four days ago, he adamantly maintained that Kolb was sending Michael Vick back to the bench.
If Reid truly believes that Vick is "playing out of his mind" as "one of the best quarterbacks in the league right now," then a Kolb trade certainly makes sense closer to the deadline. The Eagles may want to hold onto their highly paid backup for the next few weeks as insurance for a smooth Vick transition, but you can bet their ears will be wide open to trade offers. This regime is one of the most aggressive in the league. Expect to hear a host of Kolb-to-Cleveland rumors leading up to the deadline.

I'd take Kolb in a heart beat. Only two QBs I would want next year is Mallet or Luck. I think they will be very good NFL QBs, however I think Kolb can be above average or above what the browns have now. Grooming takes time and I think Kolb would fill that time better than anyone. However, we would have to probably give up way to much to get him, which I would not want to do.BR1986FB;494128 wrote:That's funny because after week 2 in the NFL season the Cleveland Browns offensive line is ranked #1. SportsAndLadyA lot of people forget that Kolb broke the NFL record for most passing yards in the first 3 starts of a career. He plays, what, half a game? And all of a sudden he's awful?
If the asking price for Kolb won't require a first round pick, I say make the trade.
If he fails...then you're in the same boat as before; bad team with no QB of the future. -
THE4RINGZDrafting and grooming takes time, and it also take the right person to groom them. Jake was brought in to groom McCoy, and prepare him to be the face of the franchise. Have they given up on that already?
Drafting and grooming also requires the correct person to be drafted. Someone who is willing to hold a clipboard on Sundays for a season or two and have the willingness to learn. All college qb's entering the draft act like they will be OK with fufilling that role, but how many really want to do it?
Drafting and grooming keeps a so-so team just so-so for a few more seasons. Will browns fans not revolt against Lerner if the franchise is allowed to stay in limbo without a quality starting qb for the next 2-3 seasons?
I would be in favor of getting a veteren qb now and start building on that. -

I for one sure have. He has a noodle for an arm. -

I know you and a large group of fans have, but has the franchise given up on that plan?OneBuckeye;494149 wrote:I for one sure have. He has a noodle for an arm. -

I can't tell you that they have, for certain, but there isn't a whole lot of "positives" coming out of Browns' camp regarding him. -

Good point I would give up anything but a 1st round pick for Kolb.SportsAndLady;494142 wrote:A lot of people forget that Kolb broke the NFL record for most passing yards in the first 3 starts of a career. He plays, what, half a game? And all of a sudden he's awful?

I'd consider giving up a first round pick if I'm the Browns. Personally I'd rather see than that a 2nd and a 3rd. I think for the Browns, a 2nd and 3rd might be more valuable due to the lack of overall talent. -

True. But you have to think with their first round pick they will take a QB of the future. Which is more valuable to this organization at this point in time than anything. -

With the way the Browns have been drafting in the 2nd round over the last few years (see Robiskie, Massaqoui & Veikune), we're probably better off without a 2nd round pick. -
jmogYeah, but for every Robiskie, Veikune, Massaquoi you have an Eric Wright (legit), TJ Ward (playing well), and maybe Hardesty (if he can get healthy).
-
SportsAndLadyWhat's wrong with Massaquoi?

thedynasty1998Reed was just on Cowherd and said he'd be "foolish" to deal Kolb. He still sounds really high on him, so it doesn't sound like he's going anywhere.
-
Commander of AwesomeHe also said McNabb is his starter - traded. Then said Kolb was his starter only to come out the next day and bench him. I dont believe a word he says.
and LOL at listening to Cowherd. He's an idiot and unlistenable. His show sucks hard. -
Art ModellFrom the front office to the field, the Browns are a mess. I warned you all when they hired Holmgren but no one would listen.
-
Art ModellAfter only 2 games the team is in total disarray.
-
Gblocki think the eagles would be foolish to trade kolb...in this league you need two quarterbacks......if vick gets hurt then what? plus i think vick is back but im not quite ready to hand him the crown for beating the lions who are like 2-27 over last two years

BR1986FBArt Modell;494251 wrote:After only 2 games the team is in total disarray.
No they aren't. There's a difference from having a lack of talent and being "in disarray." If they had players forming a mutiny, a general manager tweeting "fuck you, go root for Buffalo" and a QB raping people, THEN I'd say they were "in disarray." They just suck, talent-wise. -
BR1986FBSportsAndLady;494216 wrote:What's wrong with Massaquoi?
Nothing wrong with him. He was just a reach, just like the other two taken with him in the 2nd. -
Art ModellI kind of feel sorry for you Clown fans. I can not imagine the team that I grew up loving sucking this bad every year. I guess I should back off of you guys a little bit.

Gblockwell we had plenty of misery through out most of 80-90's living thru the mark malone bubby brister era etc....
