The league isnt strictly basketball players. Theres plenty Jews and Catholics in the NBA. -

Out of context, sure. Id be lying if I said my mouth has never spewed ignorance to my friends. But not everything I say in jest is how I truly feel.queencitybuckeye;1610850 wrote:Really? Do you make comments about ANYONE as disgusting as those he made? If so, I've read you wrong.
Obviously, what sterling said is how he actually felt. But if you only hear 15 seconds of a conversation it can make someone look really bad. And does the nba ban for life for these comments? -
AutomatikPrivate/public is irrelevant.
You can't unhear what was said. -

I disagree, but we might not be arguing the same thing. While the NBA certainly needed to take a swift and decisive action, the comments on that recorded phone call did not warrant a lifetime ban IMO. An argument could certainly be made that the comments he made more than 10 years ago did, but the NBA must not have felt so at the time. So I am confused as to why this most recent incident has the commissioner so personally outraged (other than Silver knowing that his reputation and job were probably on the line if he didn't react powerfully in light of the media uproar).queencitybuckeye;1610844 wrote:You keep making the same point, and it continues to make no sense. That people knew he was a racist X years ago and did nothing has no bearing on the fact that they did the right thing today. None.
It's whatever, though. What's done is done. -

Putting aside that Sterling is jewish (not sure if practicing)... It is LA, Silver is jewish as is David Stern......and it's a much more sensitive group. There would be vocal outrage but probably not enough to resort to banning him from the NBA and pushing him to give up franchise ownership.ZWICK 4 PREZ;1610836 wrote:honest question... would this be still in the news and would the NBA ban him if he told his gf to quit hanging out with Jews or Catholics?
Catholics, nah. It's such an oddball group to dislike since it's such a large group of people encompassing a wide variety of races and ethnic backgrounds. I mean, my grandparents used to make fun of them for having tons of kids and sometimes referred to them as fish eaters, but I don't think those stereotypes persist with younger generations. It would be reported on but probably just chalked up to a very crotchety, narrow minded old man being crotchety and narrow minded. -

Fair enough, but if it wasn't obvious by the tape itself that it wasn't in jest here, his track record confirms it beyond doubt.SportsAndLady;1610855 wrote:Out of context, sure. What, is that too expansive for you to grasp?
Point of this whole thing is no one, including you, should be saying shit about Donald Stearling because everyone one of you have said shit in the comfort of your own privacy that you wouldnt broadcast to the world. You haven't had anyone out you to the world for stupid shit youve said, -

This. Without question the influence of social media and other interactive formats for fans to voice their displeasure/outrage/whatever has had a huge impact on how this -- and other similar events -- unravelled.Midstate01;1610852 wrote:Social media is different. Now everyone can voice their opinion. I think that's a huge difference. -

Which is what I said in my second paragraph. Sterling actually did believe it.queencitybuckeye;1610861 wrote:Fair enough, but if it wasn't obvious by the tape itself that it wasn't in jest here, his track record confirms it beyond doubt.
But if, say Larry Bird, just as a random example, is being recorded without knowing and makes fun of a black stereotype, does he get banned for life?
Or does he get a less harsh punishment because there isn't a history? -

Is he "making fun" or is he seriously ranting against a race of people? If the latter, I would hope so.SportsAndLady;1610865 wrote:Which is what I said in my second paragraph. Sterling actually did believe it.

Who are you to judge what degree of hatefullness it is. I guarantee you've said shit that would offend people. You don't see it as the same level b/c you don't see it that way. I've said man i hope those jehovas witnesses don't come to my door again. Most people wouldnt think anything of it. How bought if I said man i hope no blacks come to my door today.. is that level of hatefullness higher? -
reclegend22Wait, there are people calling for the team's name to change? My god. Sterling being banned from the League for life isn't enough?

Simmonds, a black player on the Philly flyers, just scored a hat trick. If a white nba owner, on camera, said "you'd have a harder time finding a black person without a rap sheet than seeing a black player score a hat trick in a hockey game" would he/she be banned for life?queencitybuckeye;1610866 wrote:Is he "making fun" or is he seriously ranting against a race of people? Race, religion, sex.. what difference does it make? one isnt worse than another..discrimination is discrimination.. some are acceptable in this county. Some are taboo.queencitybuckeye;1610873 wrote:Based on characteristics like race? No, I have not. -

It would correctly depend on the history of that particular owner, among other factors.SportsAndLady;1610871 wrote:Simmonds, a black player on the Philly flyers, just scored a hat trick.
