True Detective (HBO)

Anyone watch this show with Matthew Mcconnaghey (sp?) and Woody Harrelson?

Holy shit, last night's episode was insane.

We've been discussing it on another thread, but I am not sure which one. I have seen all of them except the latest one. We had a free three month trial of HBO and it just ended last week. :( I am currently trying to figure out a way to see the rest of the episodes.

As for the show itself, I really like it. It's super slow, but McConaughey is excellent. I would watch him smoke cigs and drink tall boys all day. Harrelson has been great, too.

Sunday's episode was the best to date. Finally an episode where something actually happened. I was on the verge of not caring, but after Sunday's episode, I'm back in, full bore.

Shell out the $18 a month. Not only do you get great shows, but you get all of their shows ever put on TV with HBOGo

I was almost done until the end of episode 3. That got me to watch episode 4.

My roommate and I are considering it.

Don't consider it. Just do it. Especially with two of you. That's 9 bucks a month

Or have each episode fall off the truck after it airs, like it does at my house.

Don't do it. Just use SeriesCravings or Couchtuner.

The last episode was the best by far, business really starting to pick up.

No problem. If you're impatient, couchtuner will usually have the episode up before it actually airs here.

Agreed with all of the above. definitely slow, which causes me to not associate a lot of the names with the characters. glad to finally see some action last episode.

Mantooth came through with HBO Go, so I watched the latest episode last night. I thought McConaughey was really great, and I am glad the action is picking up. I am excited for next week.

Yup. Just saw this as well after finishing up the episode. I watched it OnDemand so I don't know if it was shown during the first airing of the episode. They said they used maps for the final scene and it was still crazy to manage. I'd say they did a damn good job with it.

They are wanting you to believe that Cohle is the killer, but the writing has been to good for it to be that obvious. My bet is that Cohle wanted to continue to investigate and Hart wanted to drop it. That let to their split. Cohle continued to investigate off the books and he has evidence in his storage unit.

I think it has something to do with the police being involved with the "yellow king"

He had to investigate on his own which made the police worried so they're out to frame him for being the yellow king.

No way do I believe he's the yellow king.

Exactly what I was thinking. Somebody connected is involved, and looks like they are trying to make him the fall guy. Remember Cohl's line about how "the feds were so eager to take over the case".

As for Cohl being too obvious, great writing can be obvious - that's part of why it's so good because it doesn't rely on tricks and cheap tactics.

    I think it's a high ranking cop

Could be. Small, backwater town so the police and governor are probably all related. My money would be on the son or nephew of a mayor/governor, with help covering it up from his buddies in the DA office and police.

So what did everyone think of the finale?

Every show built to the finale, and it didn't disappoint.

Any doubt that MM wasn't going to win Best Actor was utterly, totally and thoroughly obliterated in that final scene (as if it wasn't already a done deal). I think people will look back at this season as one of THE finest writing & acting pieces in a generation.

Probably not my favorite season/series for whatever reasons, but as true art with regard to television this show probably tops the list. Literally like watching an expertly written novel
  • TedSheckler
It was a good series with good acting. It wasn't the greatest thing in the history of television like some people claim.

    8/10

Im in the minority I guess. Thought the finale was well done but it should have had more tangible evidence linking the psycho to the other Sheriff and Governor. The whole "cover up" theory was murky at best and that is what made it compelling, somebody was getting away with murder because of who they were related to.
