Workout/Lifting Thread and Health Thread

Farmers walks are walking with weights in your hand. I have 45 lb Olympic bumper plates that have holes drilled into them to be used as handles. I create an obstacle course in my yard so when you walk for speed and maneuver the cones, you're not only getting a tad bit of cardio but you're also working your core. The 45's are too light so I'm going to get two of those huge blue water bottles that you see at the company water station (with handles) and fill them with water.

To piggyback on AZ's comment on the other thread, lift heavy, eat clean and walk, periodically mixing some sprints in there. I also like the farmers walk and pushing a weighted prowler for variety. Most lifts are of the compound (bench, squat, deadlift, row, etc) variety.

I see NO need for distance running. If that's your thing and you enjoy it, rock on, but I see NO practical purpose for it. It raises cortisol levels, beats the hell out of your joints and creates a "skinny fat" look in most. Again, if you enjoy it, go for it but I see no practicality in it. When is the last time you heard "the mob was chasing me so I out-jogged them for 3 miles?"

You're going to burn a lot more bodyfat training heavy (AND keeping quality muscle), with weights, than running for distance.

Again, depends on what you're going for. I prefer a lean/heathier, muscular look versus that of a distance runner.

ETB, you might want to mix in some small distance running or biking once a week in the off season.

I despise any cardio that is not on a basketball floor or football field, unfortunately. I have a boney ass, which makes bike riding tough.

Do some squats. Hope this helps.

I like it as it's just nice to be able to go out and run if you want to.

I don't do much weights at all anymore. I try to stick with different variations of push ups, pull ups, dips, crunches/planks, and then running and biking for cardio. At some point I'll probably get back into swimming, but it's always just so depressing getting back in a pool and seeing how much slower I am now.

You don't teach the youth anymore? Interesting.

Anyway, does anyone here still stick with leangains? I do. Pretty simple diet to stick to.

I'd call it "half ass" gains right now. I still fast, not tracking really cals really.

That's why it's the shit. You can follow it loosely and still not fly off the handle. Then just dial it in for a few weeks.

That's why I like the way I train. I lift heavy (6-12 reps) yet never train to failure. I enjoy the sprints/prowler/farmers walk/etc because that aspect is done quickly. The longest workout is walking on an inclined treadmill for 30-45 minutes 2x's per week. The weights & dialed in eating pretty much do the majority of the fat burning.

I am on the distance running thing right now....I try to run 3 miles a day. I mix in some upper body lifting, but I am trying to drop massive amounts of weight and the cardio seems to help
  • Azubuike24
3 miles a day, if you're efficient and not crushing yourself causing knee, hip or ankle problems that prevent other training isn't going to be a bad thing.

Speaking of farmer's walks, people think I'm crazy at my big box gym when I grab the 120 lb dumbbells in each hand, wrap them with lifting straps and walk a lap around the gym, setting them down when I can no longer bear it and rest for 15-30 seconds. I guess when a 175 lb dude who's all of 5'7 goes and grabs the 120's, people are like "WTF is he gonna do with those?"

Other "functional training", especially for legs that you can do without having to use the standard gym equipment? Get a bunch of heavy things. Old curl bar weights from the 80's I've had work great as I don't ever actually load with them. Put them in a heavy duty trash can with wheels and a handle. Try to load your body weight and drag that sucker down a back alley or street in your neighborhood. My driveway is off the back of a road that has little traffic, and it's about 200 meters long. Drag that thing behind you and drag it back. A few trips of that and you're hamstrings are cooked. Reverse it for some quad work. I guess it's about time I invest in a sled.

You guys seriously bant like_that bc said was being a creepy pedophile? WTF F4F?
  • hasbeen
Like_that started the separate thread so I could be a part of it. Kind of dumb to merge it with the one I'm thread banned in. Annoying to have to be on my phone to read the legit insight of Br and Az. Also funny that like_that's OP is the reason he got banned in the combined thread. Shit is weak.

Sounds like you have no idea what you're talking about then.
  • Azubuike24
I'd agree with dlazz. Running does have a place.

I think once you start training for anything over a 5K or so, you're starting to become too distance biased and you ARE going to hurt your strength and recovery.

In reality though, anyone who is even in decent shape, regardless what "shape" that's for, should be able to go out and do a 5K or so without problems.
  • ernest_t_bass
Decent "cardio" shape. Strength wise, I'm in great shape. Cardio? Yeah, no.
  • ernest_t_bass
I noticed someone merged threads. Does that mean you let like_that and hasbeen back in? If you didn't, as the original thread starter, I suggest you do, plz. As long as they promise not to hurt feelz people.
  • Azubuike24
I mean, I'm just talking general "shape."

I haven't done any cardio outside of walking and playing pickup basketball for more than 10 minutes in probably 2 years...but I could run a 5K without dying.

    I might die.

Maybe I should've been clear. I was referring to marathoners & half marathoners who beat the hell out of their bodies. As I said, to each their own. I don't think cortisol levels are going to go through the roof running a mile or two. If you enjoy distance running, go for it.

So what are people's opinions about exercising in the heat?

I personally don't mind it and even kind of enjoy it. I've always been a bit of a glutton for punishment when it comes to exercising; in high school my freshmen year for swimming I received a team "recognition" at the end of the season banquet it was just a simple award entitled "The Masochist" for my enthusiasm for tough practices/sets).

I got back about half an hour ago from 4 mile run in the midday sun/heat. I personally would rather it be stupidly hot over frigidly cold. I don't mind it getting down to the low 30's or high 20's. But once it gets below 20 degrees Fahrenheit I will not go running. However, I haven't met a day too hot for me to run. Then again, I've never lived in Florida, Texas or Arizona or anywhere that is ridiculously hot so that could probably change my opinion.

I used to agree with this. I never really saw a reason for running what I would consider extreme long distance, but I think it is more of a personal preference and life style choice. I sometimes envy a person that can go out and just run 10 miles because they felt like getting out for a nice run. With my 4-5 mile max I sometimes feel limited with what I can do path wise.

But I also know I'll never be a marathon guy, let alone a half marathon guy. My body has just never been built for it as I got pretty top heavy from swimming and have always maintained that general build, while inadvertently putting on unnecessary fat. I have enjoyed doing short races that I have recently got into this past year. I think at most though I could maybe do a quarter marathon, but that's the top limit for me.

I only run when the temp is between 45 to 85. I only bike when the temp is between 60 to 90. Waiting for the sun to go down to play tennis tonight.

Also, Abs and Legs this morning. Trying to get back on a routine after vacation.

    Bump

Haven't lifted since last Thursday, and I'm feeling like shit. Kinda pissed that I started my "program," where I keep track of gains, the week right before I head to vacation.
