    Oh boy, I'm like a kid in a candy store. My new Maddog Slingshot arrived yesterday and I can't wait to use it on chest day on Saturday. I see a 500+ lb bench in the near future.

    I have never been big into the power lifting scene (best shape of my life could get up 375 lb on bench when I weighed about 185 lb). But one thing I never have understood is the idea of a bench shirt. I mean it's kind of like cheating to say "I can bench 1000 lb" when a bench shirt is used. It's like saying I can lift 10,000 lbs when I use a fork truck.

    I'm willing to be wrong as I am not and have never been a "power lifter" (I just like to lift weights for exercise and have, at times, became very strong doing it).

    It's not a "bench shirt." If it were, we'd be talking closer to 700, than 500. This sling does assist in getting past sticking points but, more importantly, it allows me to bench press pain free as it keeps your elbows tucked in versus flairing, which puts unnecessary torque on the front delts. I use this thing partially because of a bad front delt.

    Here's the thing, a) I don't compete competitively so it's not "cheating" since I'm essentially using it to avoid industry while keeping muscle mass and b) I was a 500+ lb bencher raw(no gear....i.e bench shirt, 670 for 3 with a bench shirt). I'm just trying to keep what I've got, by lifting as heavy as possible, for as long as I can. I have no urge to compete. Hard to compete against all of the drugged up dudes.

    I have the red one and the black one (which I'll use for the first time Saturday). You'll be pleasantly surprised, I guarantee it.

    To be honest I didn't even know a bench shirt would added that much, I thought it was 10-20%.

    Been reading this thread for a while better never posted on it....

    I started to workout the day after tax season ended in April and it has changed my life. As of this morning, I am done exactly 49 pounds and feel like a completely different person. I didn't radically change my diet but I started to watch calories and just eat less. I took up running and played quite a bit of basketball.

    This past Sunday I did my first sprint Triathlon and I may be hooked. I have no interest in getting crazy and doing an Ironman or anything like that, but I think the sprint distances are perfect for trying to train and maintain muscle mass.

    That was the case with the old style bench shirts. Newer technology will give you a good 200+lbs extra on your bench which is fine if you compete but I agree with you that they really have no practical use, other than competitions. There are a lot of gear whores who master their use and really aren't that strong.

    Sweet! Didn't Google- what is the sprint distances? Always thought a tri would be fun but think I'd get crushed in the swim.
    How do you train for the swim portion?

    Different sprints have various distances on each segment but the one I did was 200m swim-10 mile bike-5K run. The swim portion scared the living hell out of me at first but I just started swim laps and seeing how long it took me to do 8 laps (25m pool). So, I got to where I could do it in about 6 minutes. Then on race day, adrenaline took over and my swim portion was 4:40.

    It was not really "fun" during the race, but the feeling crossing the finish line made the training worth it.

    Maybe I'm a different kind of workout/athlete but I don't consider any of those 3 (200m swim, 10 mile bike, 5K run) "sprints". I think a 400m (1/4 mile) is the longest run in track and field considered a "sprint", but someone with more knowledge than I can comment.

    If I was asked to sprint all those distances I would need a cardiologists following me the whole time. ;)

    Amen, bro. My "cardio" consists of 40 yard sprints, 30 yard weighted Prowler pushes, 250-300 lb farmers walks (20-30 yards & back) and walking on a treadmill for 30 minutes.

    When I go on the treadmill, depending on how much time I have, I go between 25-45 minutes where I walk 1 minute, 'sprint' (9-10 mph) 1 minute. Back and forth. I average under 10 minute miles doing this, but I like more 'explosion' and fast twitch than endurance.

    I don't think he is saying those are actual sprints. Sprint is just the term used for shorter triathlons. It could just as easily be called mini, half, etc.

    I know, I was all tongue in cheek being that there is no way I could even run/bike/swim that far without taking breaks/walking.

    Starting the second 4 week phase of my program which will consist of heavy sets of 4 reps on the "big four" compound lifts on Saturday. This will be followed by a phase of 3's. I do these in 4 week blocks with a deload in the 5th week. I rarely max out but might do a max lift for each compound exercise at the end of the four weeks of 3's.

    That's a short distance for even a sprint. They are usually 800m swim, 25k bike, 5k run. Olympic distance is 1600m swim, 40k bike, 10k run.
