What are you reading?

The Road is another great book. One of my favorites.

Currently reading Fatherland by Robert Harris. It is a murder/political mystery taking place in an alternative history of Germany having won WW2. It is set in 1964 on the eve of the American president - Joseph P. Kennedy (JFK's dad) - visiting Berlin for a summit with Der Fuhrer. Pretty interesting if you enjoy WW2/Third Reich history.

Started Exit West this morning. It's a short read so I'll probably get through it in a couple days. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is up after that.

Currently about 1/3 done with Blood in the Water : The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy. This shit is fucked up. But it's a fantastic book; well researched, well written, bone chilling. It won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 2017.

Very mixed (and bad) reviews. Looked at the audience reviews on rotten tomatoes and a lot said it didn't stick very closely to the book. Pretty disappointed so I'll wait for Redbox.

Good to know. I don't judge a movie purely on how close they stick to the book. It's impossible to recreate the details and nuances of a 500 page book and keep the movie a reasonable time. I heard a great quote from the Director of the Count of Monte Cristo movie. Obviously a classic ,great novel and a really good and entertaining movie on it's own. However, it didn't stick to the book too much either and they changed the ending significantly. His quote was, "My job is make a good movie...not film a book." I actually preferred the ending of the movie.

With that said, some of the reviews make American Assassin sound like it's just not a good movie.

    Regarding Fatherland by Robert Harris....

I would give it 3/5 stars. When the book focused on Nazi officials, governmental and societal issues, it was strong. Those topics were interesting because it made me imagine what it would have been like had Hitler prevailed. As far as the murder/mystery plot, I thought it was very average. Characters were only mildly interesting.

Finally finished this yesterday. 571 pages, so it took me a while. It was a very good book. Crazy and awful, but very good.

Mom gave me this book the summer before I started college, was very interesting and has been influential on my life.

Getting ready to resume "Night School" by Lee Child.

Started it a year ago, gave up after the first 3 chapters. I was on a Jack Reacher kick then, went through five or six of them, just burnt out temporarily.

I'm a little over a third done with it, it's definitely changed the way I look at money already. We've always been pretty good with our money, and saving for retirement, but the book is motivating me to be much better.

Currently: A Mountain Walked -- collection of short stories that were influenced by H.P. Lovecraft's writing, ranging from those written in the mid-1900s up to modern stuff. Overall, high quality. The older stuff from guys like T.E.D. Klein and Thomas Ligotti are the truly excellent ones, but there are still some quality stuff from the newer writers. Their stuff is a bit more uneven overall, but most of it is still good.

Just finished Night by Elie Weisel. I read this one i high school, but that was so long ago that I couldn't remember it well. It is a very powerful testimony. The cruelty of the Nazis is hard to fathom.

You a big fan of the fantasy genre? I am not but wish I were - if that makes any sense. The passion fans of fantasy and sci fi have is great, and it often makes me want to give them another try. But for the life of me I cannot get into them.

I've never been big into fantasy (other than I loved the Redwall series in middle school) but I do like sci-fi a lot. I've just had too many co-workers bug me about reading the LOTR and GOT stuff that I decided to give it a shot.
