GOONx19Keep in my house most of the time and don't feel bad about drinking it for no reason because it's not too pricey. Not really a bourbon phrase, I might have just made it up.
-
gutHow about you connoisseurs list your top-5 "everyday" (<$50) bourbons and your top-5 premiums?
Also, anyone into tequila? Might have to start another thread (unfortunately, I guess I'm low-brow so don't have much to add to that thread, either). -

I'm not a bourbon guy so I can't compare it to much but a friend bought me one and it I enjoyed it greatly. It was very easy and full of flavor. -

Yeah, it's got a great but unique flavor. This reminds me that I haven't had it in a while, so I'll probably grab a bottle this weekend.Con_Alma;1861640 wrote:I'm not a bourbon guy so I can't compare it to much but a friend bought me one and it I enjoyed it greatly. I'm almost positive that Basil Hayden is just further aged Old Grand-Dad, which is my favorite ~$20/bottle whiskey. They are definitely named after the same guy, Old Grand-Dad being Basil himself. -
iclfan2I've seen the old grand dad before. I was going to ask if anyone had sub $20 or $20-$30 "favorite budget" whisky's, bourbons or scotch. Been trying to get away from all the beer lately.

Old Grand-Dad Bonded ($23)
Buffalo Trace ($25)
Elijah Craig ($28)
Basil Hayden's ($36)
Woodford Reserve ($37)
I haven't had much premium bourbon, I can only remember Blanton's. That said, Blanton's is fantastic. -
Con_AlmaFavorite under $50

I apologize. I jumped the gun. I immediately though you were speaking of the George T. Stagg bourbon. The Stagg Jr. is much more available and at a fraction of the cost.Fred Garvin;1860599 wrote:I found it on my last trip to Illinois. The liquor store I go to there is in an old OfficeMax. It is huge and the amount of different brands they have there is amazing. Also got a bottle of 10 yr old WhistlePig Rye (100 proof). -
gutI got a bottle of Whistlepig last week. Excellent recommendation guys!

I wish I knew more about non-single malt Scotch. I would be able to chime in. As it stands, I don't know that I've bought a bottle under $50, but I do make them last awhile, so I like to think I'm still being fairly economical about it. I kinda have to be. I can't afford to drink that stuff often.gut;1861629 wrote:How about you connoisseurs list your top-5 "everyday" (<$50) bourbons and your top-5 premiums?

As for tequila, my best friend is a connoisseur of that stuff. I don't get it. I thought tequila was what you drank when you felt shitty about yourself and wanted to drink something that tasted as shitty as you felt. -

I bought some Old Pulteney 12 on a whim because it was cheap ($30) and I do not regret it at all.Con_Alma;1861658 wrote:Favorite under $50

I assumed that is what you were thinking about. You are correct, Stagg Jr. is a fraction of the cost compared to George T. Stagg. I think I paid $80 for the Stagg Jr. I know a place that charges $100 just for a shot of George T. -
Fred GarvinFavorite bourbons under $50.
Basil Hayden
E.H. Taylor Small Batch (hard to find, especially in Ohio. can be bought for around $40-50 if you find it in a retail store)
Blanton's (not sure, but I thought I paid $40 the last time I found it in an Ohio liquor store)
Favorites over $50.
Booker's
Elmer T. Lee - LOVE this bourbon. If you can find it retail, it is under $50. But you can't find it retail.
Rhetoric
Barterhouse
Pappy Van Winkle (I know, WAY overpriced. I have had the 23 year old, and it's good. But I honestly like the 10 year old better.)
I really need to take a tour of the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Many of the bourbons I like are from there. -
justincredibleThe last time I saw it on the shelves, Blanton's was $60.
-
Fred Garvin
The more I think about it, you are right. It was $60. Does anybody collect the different Blanton's bottle stoppers? I do not, but know people who do. You can also buy all of them from the Blanton's website for $3.75 each.justincredible;1861701 wrote:The last time I saw it on the shelves, Blanton's was $60. -
justincredibleI helped my brother-in-law (partner at a tech recruiting firm) place a former co-worker in a new job so he bought me this:
I've had Jefferson's before, which I liked, but I haven't had Jefferson's Reserve. I'm looking forward to opening this up soon. -

AutomatikOk, it's fall now. Which means Old Fashioneds regularly in my apartment.
What is everyone's go-to recipe? I prefer bourbon, but I'm willing to explore the realms of rye.
Right now this is pretty much it, everytime.
Standard Angostura bitters
Rough cut brown sugar cube
Muddle
Bulleit Bourbon
Big ice cube
Stir
Orange rind
Done.
What about you? Don't skimp on the details. -
justincredibleI don't make my own Old Fashioned's, but I do order them when I am out at certain establishments. I'm lazy, so all whisky is consumed neat when I'm at home.
That said, I might give yours or any other recipe posted here a try. -

Just seeing this thread now that it was bumped. Me and neighbor did Old Fashioned for the Mayweather fight. We copied a recipe he got from Grand River Brewery/Distillery in Jackson, Michigan for their house Old Fashioned. Their house distillery bourbon which was very good (not sure of cost) but the "secret ingredient" was Jack Rudy bitters in addition to orange bitters. Highly recommended. The rest was very similar to yours. Raw sugar cube, muddled. Ice cube ball. Orange peel.Automatik;1876768 wrote:Ok, it's fall now. Which means Old Fashioneds regularly in my apartment.

All of these are drinkable. I'd add Laphroaig as well for $46.Con_Alma;1861658 wrote:Favorite under $50
