    Thoughts on the Heisman race?

    CBS Sports currently has

    Mariota
    Manziel
    Winston
    Boyd
    Bridgewater

If Winston keeps it up he could win it. I thought all his early season hype was premature, but after Saturday's performance, I'm convince. He's legit.

...but Johnny Fuckup and the ATMs are a close second.
I think UF is still at the top of my list. Their fan base isn't as delusional as others so they aren't as easy to make fun of, but I love seeing them get blown out to B12 bottom feeders like Mizzou.

    Umm, Braxton?
  • Automatik
His early injury hurt him and he doesn't have the gaudy rushing stats like last year. I'll be surprised if he even gets an invite.

I don't see Braxton being a legit threat for the Heisman at this point. As previously mentioned, basically two and a half games dropped him out of the race. I really don't think Manziel will win either as the team has two losses already and he won't have that signature win over the top team in the country (already lost to Alabama).

At this point it really is Jameis Winston's to lose.
  • Tiernan
Its Mariota's to lose at this point. Anybody as long as it aint Manzier.

Wow this season has been crazy, who would have thought Mizzou would be a top 5 team lol

Mizzou isn't in the Big 12.

I have Winston over Mariota as Winston statistically has been better (more accurate passer). He has this weeks past huge prime time performance in his pocket already as a signature win. He still has another big game against Miami coming up. Mariota does have the UCLA and Stanford games to look impressive, but Winston is the new media darling (Tebow, Newton, Manziel).

Also, Winston has the advantage of being on the East coast for more exposure.

I'm pretty sure Sleeper knows that. He's making the point that middle of the pack Big 12 teams (Texas A&M and Missouri by measure of their conference championships of 1 total between the two of them) suddenly becoming "better" just because their in the SEC is laughable. I think that really is the best argument that the SEC is so much better than everyone else is a false belief. If that were true these two schools should have struggled to barely win a game in the mighty SEC. Yet the are arguably doing better in their new conference than their old conference.

I know that Sleeper knows that. I just like to read his replies.

Hell, it just bolsters the argument that you could put Indiana in the SEC and they'd win National titles.

The whole conference is a joke and is substantially overrated outside of Alabama. I have no doubt in my mind that the B10 is better than the SEC this year(SEC might not even be second best) but the media(read: ESPN and their fat contract with the SEC) continues to shove down our throats that the SEC is basically NFL-lite. Mizzou is terrible; let me repeat; MIZZOU IS TERRIBLE and they are winning the East.

I think Alabama drops a game and we'll see Oregon/FSU vs. OSU(on a 25 game winning streak) in the title game. Book it!

    Winston for me.

It's funny how whomever has the best recent game is labeled the frontrunner...imo, it's Mariota, Bridgewater, Winston and Manziel, but that certainly can/will change.

It's not just the be recent game, but he's been consistently more impressive than Mariota passing the ball.

And he has the single best resume game.
  • Iliketurtles
For me it is a 2 man race between Mariota and Winston. I think Manziel is close and just don't feel like Bridgewater can win after the loss even though he has been playing well.

As an FSU fan I hope that Winston can keep this up and they go undefeated and he wins.

...but until this past weekend he wasn't anyone's #1. I agree that the guy now has the fans' and voters' attention, but imo Mariota didn't do anything to diminish his frontrunner status (23 for 32 passing for 327 yards and 2 TDs; 8 carries for 67 yards rushing and 1 TD in 62-38 win over Washington State), but Winston is now the flavor-of-the-week. Time will tell.

Sean Mannion, Oregon State? Hell, if they don't lose to Eastern Washington, they are unbeaten and in the top 10 most likely. He leads the nation in passing yards and touchdowns.

Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin? Leads the country in RPA at 9.5, 2nd in touchdowns and rushing yards. He's also been sharing carries with James White who has 672 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Brandin Cooks, Oregon State? Leads the country in receptions, yards and touchdowns.

Mariota has no business being considered. Oregon's SoS (thus far) is weaker than OSU's.

Until Oregon faces a competent defense nobody should label him as a front runner.

I'm guessing Oregon loses to Stanford in two weeks.

They can only line up a sprinter at QB so many times before someone shuts down the run. As soon as they do that, their offense goes from explosive to nothing.

He wasn't anyone's number one for a couple of reasons that are related.

    1) He's a freshmen and they just are never picked to be Heisman front runners pre-season.

    2) He hadn't really faced a tough opponent so people were weary of his numbers because he is a freshman (so could have just been some luck or a fluke).

Early to mid-season front runners are more based off what they did the previous year and just not screwing it up rather than being incredibly impressive so far this year.

Mariota is a front runner as he did well enough last year to get that pre-season nod and hasn't really done anything to warrant falling out of the top (like Miller missing a few games and not looking like his normal self running).

Mariota has yet to have a signature game or moment to solidify his status, he's just still up there as a default in my opinion.

Winston has actually done a ton to warrant the attention he's getting.

Have you watched Oregon this year? Mariota can sling it, definitely not just a "sprinter."

He can sling it, but they only throw the ball when they've established the run and the D is collapsing in to prevent the read option.

This team is no different than the teams of Oregon's past where they put a tiny/fast QB back there and they try and punch you in the mouth quickly. As soon as they face a competent defense and knock off their offensive rhythm, they're in trouble.

There's been a lot of talk recently about his NFL potential.

Did he graduate early from high school? He's only 19, and being a redshirt soph he can opt for NFL draft.
Possible starting NFL QB at age 20...crazy.
