Dr Winston O'BoogieI am not surprised by any of this. First of all, as a Catholic, I am not offended by his comments.
That said, I have always felt that Gee was one of those people who you just hand the rope and stand out of the way - they do all the work. Ohio State sullied itself when then rehired this guy. He and Wexner drove Ohio State to lose its mission of being the flagship land grant school in Ohio. THey decided that they needed to make it compete with UM and other perceived "top tier" public schools. And what is a "top tier" public school? Well it is whatever the US News rankings say it is. Gee and Wexner bought into this and in the process created a place that is more form than substance. The window dressing of big time sports (with hired gun coaches), fancy buildings, big time amenities for students, expensive undergraduate tuition, and arbitrarily high admissions standards do not make a place Harvard. Ohio State was never meant to be a Harvard anyway. It was supposed to be the flagship public school. As such, it shoudl be accessable to most kids in Ohio adn not horded away for a privelaged few. But that's what Gee and Les wanted. The rubber stamp Board went along with that and we now have a university that lost its own plot.
F*** the board of directors - they're the ones that had to have Gee no matter what. Well, you hire a big mouthed uber nerd like that, what the hell do you expect? -

I don't disagree with everything you say, but the best move Ohio St. made was to make the Columbus campus more selective. The Ohio State system still allows graduates in Ohio to attend the regional campuses, but prior to making OSU-Columbus more selective it was an absolute $&%^hole from the 80's into the early 90's. Every top student I knew would go to OU-Athens, Miami or out of state for college because Ohio St. wasn't an option. It was too big, had a HUGE racial problem and Ohio became a brain drain with all of the students leaving and not coming back. At least now Ohio St.-Columbus is a place that top students in Ohio can attend. It wasn't that way for many years. -

Woah. OSU isnt the flagship school in Ohio? Horded away for a privileged few? Doesnt OSU have the 3rd biggest enrollment in the country only behind ASU and UCF? I must be missing something...Dr Winston O'Boogie;1450715 wrote:I am not surprised by any of this. First of all, as a Catholic, I am not offended by his comments.

There is nothing wrong with trying to raise standards. Especially if it isnt affecting anything. -

No... Not for *this*... for the NUMBER of ill-advised PUBLIC comments he's made over the last couple years. One slip up is one thing; MULTIPLE (I think it's 5 now?) slip ups for a University President is another. It's time.Tiger2003;1450710 wrote:Gordon is a legend we are not talking about Gene Smith. -

There's one group of people who don't seem to have a problem with Gee's comments: HIS TARGET AUDIENCE!!
His main responsibility is to raise money for the University. He's one of the best in the country at it. Give it a rest. -

Well this is just an overreaction if I've ever seen one. You see how well Rutger's overreaction and firing their athletic director worked out for them, and this would be much worse than that.Scarlet_Buckeye;1452068 wrote:No... I didn't mean that it isn't the flagship - but that it lost the idea of what that means. When kids from good Ohio high schools with 3.5 gpas have no chance in gaining admission to Columbus, something is way wrong. The branch campus route is not a good alternative for many, so I don't find that to be a reasonable substitute. Ohio State provides a fine education. But it isn't elite and shouldn't portend to be. It has set itself up to be a ranking juggernaut and I find that to be a problem.Pick6;1451070 wrote:Woah. OSU isnt the flagship school in Ohio? Horded away for a privileged few? I concur that improvements to the campus and surrounding areas have been important. Holbrook and Kirwin were also part of that. But those are byproducts of Gee's mission. I fundamentally disagree with the direction Ohio State has chosen to go and I think Gee personifies this choice. -

I actually am. Didn't think they'd make him do this. Maybe it was something he was thinking about doing already and this was just the last push towards that. He makes OSU a lot of dough, figured he'd have to say a lot worse to get the boot.
