College Basketball Random Chatter 2013-2014 Season

Secondly, I guess I didn't realize it was a college debate cause I skimmed most of the last 2 pages. While I think Wiggins is tremendous in college, you are right it's a 3 man race right now. But now one in the world thinks Doug McDermott is better than Wiggins. I was going off pure skill, potential and next level ability. In that sense I stand by Parker being #3 overall with Wiggins and Smart fighting for #1. To give a sense, for what I was talking about, Joel Embiid is probably in my top 10...and nd es arranging like 15 min a game off the bench for Kansas.
I would agree that, in terms of NBA prospects, Wiggins could certainly be argued as the player with more upside/potential due to his superior athletic skill. So no argument there from me.

My point was just at this stage of the game, despite their different playing styles as underlined above, Parker is clearly the more polished and well-rounded player with a more NBA-ready skill set at this time. His presence of mind and effortless demeanor while doing the things he does is just incredible. There's a wow-factor there that isn't quite there yet with Wiggins. Once Wiggins fully matures into his body and develops more facets to his game (he's not a great shooter yet, for example), then I think the sky's the limit. But let's not also act like Parker is only going to be good in college. As lhslep said, he's essentially a more team-oriented Carmelo Anthony with a post game. And as his body continues to get stronger, he will only get better. Just like Wiggins.

Wiggins has been disappointing thus far. Especially considering all the hype he was getting. It's early still but he's got Harrison Barnes syndrome so far.

Hey nothing wrong with a guy averaging 17 PPG. I will say however that Parker seems to have a higher ceiling as a player and is more of an elite player than Wiggins. Btw it is insane that Barnes and McDermott played together in high school, totally unfair

Wiggins is averaging 14.3 and 5.6. Has yet to have a double double. Anyone arguing he hasn't been disappointing, compared to the hype of him AND the hype of his recruiting class, is biased.

Then again, he's got 3 more months.
  • Azubuike24
Memphis plays Oklahoma State again tonight BTW. Josh Pastner is something like 0-13 vs top 25 teams since coming to Memphis.

My thoughts exactly. The hype leading up to Wiggins had him being unstoppable. Haven't seen it yet. He's missing something still; whether it be killer instinct or something along those lines, I have yet to see it.

If do often wonder if the roles were reversed, and Parker was at Kansas and Wiggins at Duke, if anyone would be calling Wiggins a success at this point..
  • Azubuike24
The knock on Wiggins was never physical, it was always mental and many always asked did they ever see that beast mode from him where he would step on everyone, including his own teammates and coaches to get it done. It started his Sophomore year. It went on throughout his recruitment. His comments were always very surreal. He NEVER spoke out once to shut up much of the drama surrounding his recruitment. He never spoke out against the former coach of his who wasn't at all involved, but was speak on behalf of Andrew.

Again, this isn't a knock or a bad thing, but it's all a reflection of a certain personality. It has shown on the court. It's something that even if every one of your skills develops to be elite, can this ever manifest? It's VERY similar to Tracy McGrady. He always had a similar aura surrounding him.

Lol you guys need to relax on Wiggins, and we need to change the subject.

Don't lie, lol. Don't you want to see him get absolutely fucking pissed and just crush a team for a game? I don't know how many AW games I've watched (both in HS, AAU, AS games and at KU) where I've been waiting for that.
  • reclegend22
A lot of Tracy's aura was a result of his really cool lazy eye. But I do think the comparison is valid from what we've seen of Wiggins to this point. For a brief stretch in the early to mid 2000s, McGrady was probably the most talented player in the world with a skill set that many believed would eventually help him supplant Kobe Bryant as his generation's greatest player. Despite all the physical tools, however, he never really appeared to unlock that inner desire to be truly great, to (as Azu says) want to kill guys and set himself apart from other All-Stars, and eventually he became just another amazingly talented guy about which people wonder what might have been.

But you know what? Wiggins is on a team that has all the pieces to win a title. Parker is not. So Wiggins probably doesn't give a shit.

Of course I'd like to see that. But Bill Self has recruited a lot of 5* recruits, and NONE of them have been Kevin Durant. Because Self coaches his teams to conf. championships and Final Fours, not unanimous All American selections.

Xavier Henry, Josh Selby, Darrell Arthur, Russell Robinson, Mario Chalmers, Brandon Rush, Perry Ellis..all of those guys are 5*, top 25 guys who thought would explode. And none of them did their first season; but a lot of them played into Self's scheme and eventually became AAs and made Final Fours.

If anyone thought Wiggins would come in and have 28, 10, and 5 right now, they don't know what Bill Self is about.

(that is why I thought it was insane Wiggins went to KU, because he was told repeatedly this, and still decided to play his 1 season at KU instead of somewhere else where he could have put up 30 and 10)

Enough of this Wiggins/Parker talk (I barely skimmed through, but just wanted to give you guys a hard time anyway).

There are more important things happening...

Like me going to Chapel Hill on December 14th for the Carolina/Kentucky game. I'm so excited a can barely sit still!!

That's pretty awesome, iron. Should be a fun environment. I hope you end up having a horrible time, however.

    :)

After beating Louisville, Carolina has decided to ruin my good mood by playing like garbage against UAB.

Don't worry, rec. I'm quite certain that trip will have a disappointing end, but it'll just be good to be back in Chapel Hill for the first time in a long time.

Kentucky -6 tonight against Providence at Barclay's Center. On FS1 at 8:30 PM.

Anyone who wants to make money.

Creighton really struggling to score against the length of George Washington's zone, and also vice versa on the other end. I am willing to admit that I might have jumped the gun; my initial evaluation was admittedly heavily influenced by the Bluejays' 30-point trouncing of Arizona State (a very good team).

I still like their chances this year as possible Sweet 16 team, but the loss of Greg Echenique (who they really didn't replace) might be bigger than I thought.

Catching a Duke game in the Dean Dome is definitely something I will do (hopefully a few times) before I die. Most Duke fans would disagree, but it's actually a very cool arena and one-of-kind because of all the Carolina blue. I enjoyed visiting it when I had the chance in high school.

I took it as well (teased it with OK State).

I also have money on the Creighton game as part of a teaser (hence my freak-out post above). Thank God Grant Gibbs put on his Amare Stoudamire cape at half-time and has come out dunking on everyone. Bluejays lookin' good so far.
  • reclegend22
Spoke too fucking soon. Got damn it. Need Creighton to win is all.
  • SportsAndLady
I have no idea how teasers work..if you're bored and want to dumb it down for me, feel free. If not, I'll continue to be a huge gambler with no knowledge on a common bet lol
  • reclegend22
    Fuck you, Creighton.

Basically, a teaser bet allows you to adjust the point spreads of games by combining bets together (with the expectation of a lower return, of course, depending on how many points you choose to adjust the spread (or "tease"). The more bets you combine together, the more you are allowed to tease the point spreads. For example, if you combine three bets together, you can adjust the point spread for all three games by as much as eights points. Or, if you want more of a return on your bet, you can choose to only tease the game by 3 points or 5 points.

For my Creighton teaser, I had:

    Creighton - Pick
    Oklahoma State - +2
    Charlotte Bobcats - +19

    Again, fuck you, Creighton.
  • Azubuike24
UK hasn't covered a spread in a while. Neutral court, Providence has a decent record against low competition. It was a sucker bet. I hope.
  • reclegend22
I feel good about my bet: UK -2 and Oklahoma State -1 and 1/2
