College Basketball Random Chatter 2012-2013 Season

I agree with this. Most hate Calipari, but he's never been proven to have broken the rules. He's slick, to be sure, but then again so are a lot of big time college coaches. However, there's still a chance that he really did have nothing to do with any of the illicit activity that went on at UMass and Memphis, so I reserve judgement.Azubuike24;1314365 wrote:More media hypocrisy.
UCLA recruit Shabazz Muhammad still under investigation, and rumors swiriling that he may never play a college game.
Indiana Freshman Hanner Perea and Peter Jurkin suspended 9 games each.
The only news blurb of the offseason you ever saw regarding eligibility? Kentucky Freshman Nerlens Noel being investigated. Articles in CBS, Sports Illustrated and Yahoo. Updates on the ESPN Ticker. Noel cleared, no wrongdoing found, no eligibility issues, yet the media accomplished it's goal. Attract readers and create a story out of nothing.
Sad.
With that said, taking both Kentucky and Calipari's histories into consideration, there you go, that's why ESPN and the rest of the basketball media only cares about controversy in Lexington. It's just like whenever Duke gets humiliated in the tournament or in any other game or the whole Lance Thomas affair, ESPN and everyone else rides that wave because that's what everyone wants to talk about. -
reclegend22What I am trying to say is, Duke and Kentucky are without question the most despised teams in college basketball, and right on par with Notre Dame in all of college athletics.

Azubuike24It's just weird because the last 3 "topics" involving recruiting issues at UK under Cal, Eric Bledsoe, Enes Kanter and Nerlens Noel all occurred before he was even recruited at UK.
Eric Bledsoe's grade issue was when he was 15 and 16, between his Sophomore and Junior year. Calipari was hired at UK after his SENIOR YEAR was over and although Calipari did contact Bledsoe while the coach at Memphis, that was during Eric's Senior season.
Enes Kanter had eligibility problems from playing "for pay" when he was in 9th grade in Turkey. He wasn't even on the radar of D-1 programs at the time of the paid salary.
Nerlens Noel was being investigated for improper funding of travel expenses on recruiting trips made his Junior year, to OTHER SCHOOLS, specifically, Louisville. While violations can still occur regardless, the specific situation being investigated was an unofficial visit he made to his current school's biggest rival.
I understand the eligibility issues and needing to be timely investigated by the NCAA. I don't even mind the media keeping us updated on these issues, that usually are not made public by the NCAA. With that said, none of the three mentioned even directly implicated Calipari or Kentucky, and none were potential violations that Cal or UK would've even benefitted by being complicit in. Yet when the story comes out, they read like it's a centralized investigation into the school. Just pisses me off I guess.

Midstate01Not surprised at all that IU is in trouble. But 9 games?? How'd they come up with such a low number. If they took money, how aren't they ineligible longer then that?

killer_ewok'Cuse-SDSU Midway Carrier game moved from Friday evening to Sunday at 1:00 pm.

Works out great considering the Giants, Bills and Chargers play at 1, the Jets at 4 and the entire NFL is on all day. Oh, that and one of the top 10 OOC games of the year is being played outside.killer_ewok;1314575 wrote:'Cuse-SDSU Midway Carrier game moved from Friday evening to Sunday at 1:00 pm.
Dumb. Rescheduling is counter-intuitive in this instance. -

Just a question, but do you even know what the situation is and what the NCAA ruled on?? They set an awfully slippery precedent and its honestly a joke that what they found resulted in anytime at all.Midstate01;1314449 wrote:Not surprised at all that IU is in trouble. But 9 games?? Azubuike24I agree, it was a joke. You're wrong about one thing though. This "precedent" is meaningless because the NCAA doesn't follow their own precedents in most cases. They generally just set a new one and move on...

lol, that is true. As you have pointed out before...Azubuike24;1314767 wrote:I agree, it was a joke. You're wrong about one thing though. This "precedent" is meaningless because the NCAA doesn't follow their own precedents in most cases. They generally just set a new one and move on...
This is basically the direct opposite or Michael Oher (ruling wise, same circumstance). I mean, if the kids go somewhere else, they are cleared? So dumb.
Their A-Hope Leader and Legal Guardian clears funds to send them home and other things and the NCAA oks it beforehand. Then, IU self reports that the man (Mark Adams) had donated 185 dollars total to IU back in the day...before these kids were even born, and the NCAA now considers him a booster??? That is so illogical I cant even wrap my head around it. Mike DeCourcy, Bilas and Seth Davis had too stories/Tweets about it tonight. Im too tired to type anything up, but thats the brief summary. So dumb. This is literally over $185 from the late 80-early 90s over 6 years because his wife is a graduate. The players werent given any benefits that the NCAA said was illegal. They basically just said they were steered by a booster (same as Michael Oher...errr....I guess not??) -
Midstate01NCAA officials determined that Jurkin and Perea accepted approximately $6,000 and $8,000, respectively, in impermissible benefits from an Indiana University booster while they were in high school. The benefits included plane tickets, meals, housing, a laptop, cellphone and clothing.

He was the A-Hope program director (aka, every kid that comes over from Africa...or in Pereas case Columbia...gets those benefits. They arent illegal). He was also their legal guardian, which pretty much means its DOUBLY ok for those benefits. Finally he was only considered a booster because he bought IU stickers before these kids were born that had some proceeds go to the University. He bought them because his wife is an alum and wanted them. -
Laley23This is a good sumnation, by Eamonn Brennan:
http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/66502/ncaas-indiana-suspensions-just-plain-silly
Calling Indiana University’s corrective actions “substantial and meaningful,” the NCAA on October 31, 2012, ac*cepted as secondary a case IU filed with it on June 22, 2012. In short, that case involves the provision of what would generally have been permissible expenses but for the provider’s donation of $185 to the IU Varsity Club between 1986 and 1992, rendering him forever a “booster” under NCAA rules, notwithstanding that the donations were minimal in nature and occurred over 20 years ago. -
MulvaAnyone want to hazard a final four prediction that we can all point and laugh at when the season ends?
I'm going to say Memphis, Louisville, Indiana, and Syracuse. -

Done. Most of them were from 2010 celebrating the championship haha. Most of those Duke fans quit the site after that. Mission accomplished here, I guess lol.SportsAndLady;1316521 wrote:Rec clean your inbox out..you can't receive PMs -

Why must the NCAA insist on doing this during the week when people have jobs they can't miss in order to not sleep for 24 hours to watch basketball? Couldn't a Friday night into Saturday work? I know there is college football to compete with, but that's just the way it is. Meanwhile, nobody is watching college basketball on Tuesday at 8 a.m. GMAFB.Laley23;1316569 wrote:November 13th.

Azubuike24A bad name to mention on here, but Baylor is taking on Lehigh in a decent opener. Baylor looks really good, way better than last year against a very good mid-major. Up 57-41 early 2nd, 20 points for Freshman Isaiah Austin, who has the shoes to fill in for both Perry Jones, Quincy Acy and Quincy Miller up front.
C.J. McCollum with 24 for Lehigh. -
MulvaWasn't Derrick Nix almost kicked off of Michigan State this offseason? How did he end up a captain?
