2013 recruiting chatter

It'd be really nice to land Tyus Jones, obviously, for not only his talent alone but we will need a PG to come in and run the show for the 2014-2015 season with Thornton graduating next season and Cook right behind him. I'd really like for him to be able to play alone Cook for a year, assuming he does stay all 4 years.

Ashley, Hollis-Jefferson(in-coming FR),Tarczewski, Chol, Jerrett and now Gordon. Their frontcourt is going to be stacked if they all return.

(No surprise after the Heels signed Nate Britt and with Marcus Paige already on the roster in Chapel Hill.) Jones lists Minnesota as one of his final seven schools, but I imagine it's simply there to appease the home base. He ain't going to Minnesota.

The seven schools still in the hunt for Jones: Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Baylor, Michigan State, Ohio State and Minnesota.
Carolina has Joel Berry, 5* PG from the Orlando area, coming to Chapel Hill in the 2014 class. I'd say he'll play over Britt when the time comes, but we'll see. Britt has fallen in the rankings due to a knee injury that kept him out most of last season. Anyway, the Tyus Jones to Carolina ship sailed a long time ago.

    Decent news for Carolina?

    Alex Poythress returning to UK.
  • Midstate01
How does uk plan on signing so many guys with only a few leaving?? Saban jr?

    Freshman
    - Harrison, Harrison, Young, Johnson, Randle, Lee, Willis
    Sophomores - Cauley-Stein, Poythress
    Juniors - Wiltjer
Seniors - Hood (unconfirmed), Polson* (unconfirmed)

*previous walk-on, could be asked to go back.

They really don't have a scholarship problem with Mays graduating, Harrow transferring, Goodwin and Noel going pro.

The more I think about, the more I can't think Poythress would've come back if he really thought Wiggins was coming. It just doesn't make sense, especially since rumors were that his family wanted him to consider the NBA.

Same thing I was thinking. I'm not getting my hopes up though. Calipari will somehow pull off this magic show, I'm sure.

I thought they were losing 4 and bringing in 7. Must have read it wrong.

They did not have 12 on ships this year, I dont believe.

If they did, they were walk-ons who were given ships. At least, I think thats correct.

They must have confused him with highlights of Dominique Wilkins, because Wiggins didn't even win the dunk contest. Chris Walker from Florida was nasty.

Jabari Parker performed as well, and while being a high-flyer is not his game, he paid tribute to Rex Chapman and David Lee with a nice toss-around-the-back dunk.

My guess is the forcing out of Harrow and Goodwin with a coup d'état was probably part of the plan of making this happen.

Harrow is leaving to go play closer to his ailing puppy or something, though, so it worked out nicely for Calipari. I'm not hating on the program -- I actually respect the tradition a lot -- but when you are operating a basketball factory, you're going to get some scruinity.
  • Azubuike24
Harrow, yes. Goodwin, no. Given the prospects of getting Wiggins, I'd bet you Cal would've traded Goodwin for Poythress. The Harrison's are gonna start, Young and Polson will be backups at the 2 and 1, but it would be nice to have someone like Archie who could fill minutes at the 1 and 2 if needed. With Wiggins though, who can honestly play the 1, 2 or 3 as well as anyone, it won't matter. If they don't get him, guard depth is somewhat of a concern.

You cheered for Duke -- futilely -- on Sunday, so as a return of favor, I am behind you 100% on Wiggins. Florida State and Kansas aren't getting him. You are my last hope. Contact him if you have to, Az. Maybe even follow him wearing a UK hat. Whatever it takes, just get the damn job done.

This was posted on CatsPause, but it has some relevance.

When Sports Illustrated called Jabari Parker "the best high school player since LeBron James" on its May 21, 2012 cover, a rivalry was born. Andrew Wiggins, then a grade below Parker, believed he was the best player in the country and deserved the cover story of the magazine. He was upset that Parker got the nod, and from that moment forward, he was out to prove SI wrong. The upcoming summer AAU circuit would provide the opportunity to outshine Parker, so Wiggins thought.

But just two days before the 2012 Nike Peach Jam, an AAU tournament that would put the two in a head-to-head matchup on its third day, was set to kick off in South Carolina, Jabari Parker announced he would sit out to recover from a right heel injury he had been playing on for two months. Parker's father said his son was fine and just needed the rest at the time. He said Jabari had nothing to prove that summer after earning a state title and Gatorade Player of the Year honors.

    Andrew Wiggins disagreed.

Wiggins wanted Parker to prove he deserved the SI cover and the "Best Since LeBron James" title. Wiggins wanted a shot at Parker, the nation's best player. Wiggins wanted to outshine him in front of every scout and college basketball coach in America. But Parker was resting that heel and "had nothing to prove," in his eyes.

Andrew Wiggins won't ever admit it publicly, but some of those who know him will tell you he thought Jabari Parker was ducking him last summer. At the time, Parker was the top ranked player in the 2013 class; Wiggins the top ranked in the class of 2014. Wiggins was hungry to be the guy, while Parker had already drawn all the praise. It's the matchup everyone wanted to see, everyone, except the Parkers.

Tonight, after almost a year of debating the two prep stars, we get to see the matchup, if only for a few plays. It's not the game Andrew Wiggins hoped for last summer, but he'll have the opportunity to body up with the player he overtook for the No. 1 spot when he reclassified last fall.

Both guys will probably tell you tonight doesn't matter and it's all in fun, but there's no denying the magnitude of the contest. Wiggins, though now the top guy, finally gets his shot at Sports Illustrated's cover boy; Parker gets the kid who took his spot atop the high school rankings.

Keep an eye on this one, folks. It's going to be a showdown.

A few if's....Not a fan of the Heels at all but I say if Wiggins wants to try to get the best of Parker at least two times in college, sign with UNC. If he wants to one up with him a title, the best shot is Kentucky. If he wants to try to one-up him by showing he doesn't need to play with McDonald's AA to win(this would be in Wiggins mind, not mine), and still get a shot at him 1-on-1 then go to FSU.

If he is over the SI cover, and doesn't care about anything other than playing along side his older brother, sign with Wichita State. :)

All makes sense. Meaning, we have no clue what he will do...haha.

His brother Tweeted that Andrew will "Shock" the world when he announces.

Ah. To Jabari and SI's credit, Parker is a two-time National Gatorade Player of the Year in the USA, so I really don't think it's too hard to fathom why he was the magazine's target. It was just a storyline. There have been five or best players since LeBron.

I do think tonight is going to be a great battle between Parker and Wiggins. Perhaps even epic. You know both want to destroy each other.

That's another reason I want to see wiggins at unc. It would just add to the rivalry

ESPN recruiting analyst, Reggie Rankin, I think, predicted today that Wiggins is going to Kansas. Like you, I think it's a Kentucky/Carolina race, as do many others.
