Just because ESPN tells you something doesn't mean you should believe it...look at the facts, then form your own opinion (i know that's hard for you to do)

Yahoo's article cited a source, many believe to have been Cicero. Yahoo approached OSU prior to their release with their story. Is it really unreasonable to think Yahoo informed OSU that someone informed Tressel of the dealings with Rife prior to OSU becoming aware, and then at that time OSU knew they had to self report?

You're right, OSU talked to Tressel in Jan. reported early feb, NCAA interviewed him a few days after.

OSU found the information before Yahoo said anything to them about it. They found the emails Jan 13th I believe is what was said. Yahoo called OSU the day the article was coming out.

Was it really the day after NSD? That's a shady move.

Smart? Almost as "smart" as Miami not telling Golden about all of the Shapiro stuff when they were interviewing him.

I cna't find anything that gives an actual date of the first notification of the NCAA, only when they interviewed Tressel on Feb 8th. Can you link where you are getting hte info ( I can't find the actual OSU report, so it may be that)

Yeah I'll try. I'm 99% sure it was dated Feb 3.

The recruits still had time to go other places. The one kid from Pennsylvania backed out and went elsewhere.

Why people are still trying to figure this out is beyond me. Its done and over with. Move on and get over yourself. Its obvious who is trying to target OSU and who is not. At this point, who really gives a shit. They F'd up big time, the are paying the price right now, and could even more. Some of you think you know what happened, and you don't. Nobody knows except those who were directly involved. Its easy to say things were done for a reason, avoided for a reason, or whatever. When in reality, unless you are involved in that situation, you have no clue what goes on behind the scenes. The number of people involved would probably shock many people when you look at scope of this situation. Players, coaches, university, lawyers, etc, etc. ect. Obviously, OSU didn't handle things very well. But I have no question, lawyers were involved and they were pretty much doing what they were told to do. Like it or not, think it was right or wrong..it is what it is. Move on.

lol that didn't take long. Googled "osu report to NCAA" and its the first link that pops up.

    Last line of second paragraph.
After conducting additional fact finding, including questioning Tressel, the university notified the NCAA on Feb. 3.

Weird, cause I did the same thing and kept getting the current shit and the Yahoo article.

Yeah I am pretty sure in that case you are allowed to get released from your LOI with no issues

But the only problem with that is the guys who want to leave have extremely limited options, as most programs sign as many recruits as they have spots open and those are usually all filled on Signing Day.

From what I understand, Tressel didn't tell anyone on the team about it until right before the Yahoo story came out (as Yahoo called OSU that morning to try to get a statement). So I don't think when they reported it was going to matter until the NOA came out or in this case, the Yahoo story.

It was smart....and timely. If OSU found out January 13th, and then reported a few weeks later I'd say that was a very timely report. Certainly you need a week or two to verify tyhat all information is correct, consult with attornys, etc.

If you really want to look at a shady report, you should look to the Notre Dame scandal in the mid '90's....Lou Holtz exiting one step ahead of the NCAA, leaving the next coach and Father Malloy to pretend that they didn't know what was going on.

OSU conducted a "full" investigation of the violations reported in December in 11 days. That includes learning of violations, reporting to the NCAA, talking to everyone, and making a ruling. A few weeks later it takes them 3 or so weeks just to report it and it just so happens to be reported the day after a recruiting class becomes official? You don't see how that could be seen as shady?

I'm shocked that you of all people would think Holtz' exit was shady. Notre Dame was put on 2 years of probation for doing the exact things that you have been defending since all of the stuff came out with Tressel. NCAA taking advantage of athletes and players should be getting paid, etc. Why is it all of a sudden shady in your mind? And I'm not excusing what happened with Holtz, he resigned for whatever reason, the school was investigated and put on probation.

Just tweaking you Lotz. I went to a high school run by the Brothers of the Holy Cross, and about 10% of the class went on to ND. I have no hate for the Fighting Irish. In fact, I'd root for the Irish in every game but when they play the Buckeyes. But you ND fans seem to take special pleasure and go out of your way to needle us about OSU 's foibles. As I've maintained on here all along...In a den of thieves, there is no honor. I don't know how old you are, but Lou left rather abrubtly and curiously....kind of a 'Time to go!' kind of a thing. If my memory serves me, 6-8 months later the scandal broke. Sex, cheating, BIG money.Who knew what when?.....none of the marvels of modern technology like e-mails to nail someone down. Notre Dame skated on a relatively light penalty for major infractions.

I'm not defending Tressel, although in the beginning, I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. He did screw up ...badly...but he was also standing up and taking his punishment. Iam not an insider, so it is impossible for me to know whether there was more than just the lack of judgement in this regard. Ifthat is all it was, it is my opinion that he shouldn't have been fired.
