Let The Ohio State Head Coaching Search Begin

Yeah but Ginn was awesome from the get-go. As are most guys who turn out to be "players" at Ohio State. Verlon Reed really hasn't shown me anything at all.

The CBs and safeties aren't NFL all-pro types either, but they have been solid so far this season. I won't kill them too much.

Reed showed he can catch balls against Toledo and Akron. Same with Stoneburner. Toledo looked more athletic than OSU last week. The excuses are easy. But what we know now is the OSU doesn't have top tier talent and lacks overall depth. Maybe the talent in Ohio just isn't there anymore.

I'm a big Meyer fan. He's got a huge ego. He won't sit back for long. You can only analyze, interview and breakdown games for so long before you are itching to get back into the mix. Add to that, he will have the backing of one of the top 10 college football jobs knocking at his door. He'll be back, the question is will it be at OSU? There are going to be some other major jobs that may have openings. Georgia also comes to mind. There would definitely be some luster to that job I'd think, not that Urban has a bone to pick with UF, but again, the ego. Wouldn't he love to take on the Gators again? You also never know who else may consider the NFL.

Would you guys be alright with a spread look on offense if a new coach brought that with him?

I'll be honest and say what I have always said, I am leery of a coach who runs a system and who only recruits players that fit in their system. When you do this you limit what you can do and you make down years more likely.

One of the things that I liked about Tressel was that he would recruit the best players available, then craft and offense to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. When he had a game manager in Krenzel OSU relied on the run game and Kenzel's decision making ability, and only threw the ball 15 times a game. When they had Troy Smith they ran a spread, allowing Smith to use his feet and his arm to make plays. With Boekman he ran a pro-style offense. With Pryor he ran a modified pro-style offense that allowed the QB to be mobile.

If you run an offensive system that requires a certain type of player you cut talented people out of your recruiting pool and you limit your ability to succeed when you don't have the players that you need, because your system doesn't fit their strengths (look at Michigan under Rich Rodriguez).

Even though I'm not a huge Urban Meyer fan, I feel that he is more willing to modify and adapt his system to fit his players. When he first got their they ran more of a pro-style offense and less zone-read with Chris Leak. With Brantly they again moved away from such a heavy zone-read system.

That's a fair point. As a fan of a recently revamped offense (ND) I was hesitant at the concept of an up tempo spread going in. Kelly had an ideal QB mold for his system and I really didn't think any of the guys we had met the criteria. So far I've seen progress in the system from Rees but right now it remains to be seen if he can become the guy Kelly needs him to be. The reason I asked was because obviously the verdict is going to be out on Braxton Miller for quite a while but from the few chances I've had to see him he really seems like a spread guru's ideal project QB.

Clearly that would be a very short term bonus for any potential candidate for the job but there are very few kids in the country right now with the skill set he possesses. If he were to reach his maximum potential I don't think it would be unfair to call Darron Thomas a poor man's Braxton Miller. That being said, and as you pointed out, the variables in completely swapping offensive philosophy go far beyond the QB position. I just think it would be an interesting thing to see.

3 Games into his FR year Ginn only had 3 catches for a total of 11 yards, and was a non-factor in the return game. Holmes also only had 3 catches in his first three college games. It usually takes a while for FR WR's to become a factor in the game. That's the problem with Ohio State's WR's right now, tonight their four top WR's were a RS SO, RS FR & 2 True FR. It's an experience issue moreso than a talent issue, both Devin Smith and Evan Spencer have plenty of talent. It'll be a different story when Posey and Brown become available, but right now OSU has absolutely no experience or depth at WR.

How about Dantonio, the Stoops at Arizona? I'm sure there are others, but I don't know if the big names are always realistic.

We are fucking terrible. Seriously embarrassed that we can trot out a guy as bad as Bauserdoosh. And Fickel :

I was a defender of you, but not anymore. Good luck in your next job, but you are not the answer.

Wow...the rats are jumping off ship pretty fast.

Is Bauserman the greatest QB ever? No. But he makes good decisions and gives you a chance to win. He knows when to throw a ball away and has kept some plays alive with his feet. Someone said to try a screen...they did! Miami sniffed it out and instead of throwing the pick to the LB who jumped the route, he went down to run another offensive play. Miller did nothing but turn the ball over. So what if you run the ball 30 yards if you are going to do nothing but give it to the other team after the 30 yards you gained. Miller is awful. If you arent going to play Bauserman...play Graham.

As for Fickell...he is a figurehead. OSU is letting the coordinators call the games. Luke just stands there (and as my sister-in-law says...he "looks pretty"). It would be nice if he had the chance to really do what he wants with the team. Instead, I feel he has clearly been told to stay out of the way of the guys calling the plays.

    you're wrong
  • Writerbuckeye
Wrong. This is Fickell's shot and he's doing it wrong.

Turnovers or not, Miller is the QB on the roster with the most upside, and one who has the athleticism to turn a busted play into a positive.

Relying almost solely on Bauserman tells me Fickell is trying to "manage" his way to a full-time gig at OSU, and last night showed you where that's going to go.

This team will be lucky to win 6 games as things now stand. May as well play the young stud QB and let him learn.

    As for the coaching search:

Meyer - if he wants it. Just hand him the keys and turn him loose.
Chris Peterson if Meyer says no.
If both of those say no, open things up and see if one of the Stoops would like to come home.
    No Pelini, please.
I don't think Beckman is ready.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Glad there are some others who realize that there isn't exactly an "answer".

Yes and no. I think he definitely has his hands in the defense, and I don't think most of their problems have anything to do with coaching. The LB's just aren't that good and the line is lacking serious depth. As for everything else, I am not sure he was TOLD to stay out of the way, but it's obvious with the coaching staff not being his guys and having been there for so long, having success, etc, that he feels like he should stay out of their way, which is a major problem. I do feel like he is letting Bollman make all the decisions on offense.
  • Writerbuckeye
Fickell has said in interviews that he knows nothing about offense and doesn't get involved in it. Isn't that obvious from the past two games? This has been all Bollman, and it's been worse than under JT, because at least JT had final say on play calling.

I'm not so sure the defense is lacking depth on the OL or is particularly weak at LB. I think if you had a decent offense, as most top D-1 schools do, the defense would look even better, because they wouldn't be on the field 70 percent of the time.

Put last year's offense with this defense and the team is 3-0 (easily, I believe) and the defense would be ranked in the top 5-10 in the country in most categories.

Whoever comes in as coach next year is going to have a defense that is pretty talented waiting for him. All he has to do is put the right coordinator in charge of it.

It's PAINFULLY obvious. I don't think Fickell even has much of a say on which QB is playing. And did anyone else notice that while everyone was complaining about him not calling a TO, that the camera panned to him, he was talking on the headset with his hands almost signaling a TO and looking confused as to what he was hearing over the headset. Did Fickell truly give up, or was he talked into giving up by his coaches?

It's quite obvious that the talent OSU has had in the past is not there. They lack when it comes to tackling, horribly. They lack speed in the middle, and they only have 2 playmakers and 1 run stopper on the DL. Usually you hear the coaches complaining about not being able to get all the LBs and DL into the game that deserve time.... this year you ONLY hear that about the DBs. You more or less hear about "omg who is gonna fill in?!" about the LBs and the DL

Lawls. He throws every ball away because he can't freaking pass. I've never seen a qb ever throwing it out of bounds or out of the endzone so much.

When you watch the replays from behind the defense, OSU's WR couldn't get ANY separation from the DBs. In other words, BAD

IMO....the only two serious candidates who will be considered will be Urban Meyer and Chris Peterson.

Beckman is a good coach but he would be just like Fickel....not ready for this job

While I agree that Beckman is not quite ready for the OSU job, I'd hardly say he is just like fickell. Especially if you think Beckman is a good coach, because Fickell is not (as HC).
  • Ty Webb
Not trying to diss Beckman....but I meant that he just isn't ready for a job like this...

I think he will take a smaller BCS job first then will be considered for a big time job like OSU

The question with Meyer will be if he wants to put all of the work time of a head coach. He quit Florida twice within a short period of time. Many guys like the announcing jobs because they are still connected with the sport but only have to work a few days a week. I would hate for him to take the Buckeye job and then decide in a year or two that he was tired of coaching again.
