Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the ACC??

WVU to the SEC passes the eye test.

I highly doubt the SEC passes on them because of the academics, but the general consensus on realignment priority goes:

    Primary focus: football
    Secondary focus: academics
    Tertiary focus: basketball

No one is leaving the ACC not with the buyout now being doubled to 20 million to leave the conference. Also no one in the ACC has really shown any interest to leave.

But WVU doesn't add anything to football. Do you think Auburn/Bama/Florida/LSU etc. wants to share their revenue with them? If you are going to add anyone to your conference there are two rules: (1) the addition makes you stronger, or (2) it is a defensive position. I can understand the ACC going after Pitt/'Cuse for (2) to preserve the conference, but there is no reason for the SEC to take in WVU.

I agree with your post, but I'd say the ONLY reason for the SEC to take WVU is if the landscape shifts to 4 power conferences. Those last 1-3 teams you take in your conference aren't going to do the 1st thing you posted (make your conference better), but it IS a defensive move...you have to add your 14th, 15th, and 16th teams, and they aren't going to be strong.

    ^^^

Here is where I disagree, the Big 10 and SEC are powerful enough that they can stand pat. If the Big 10 sticks with Nebraska they will be fine, likewise with the SEC with aTm (and even then it isn't necessary).

The other conferences have to be defensive since they don't bring in nearly the revenue. With the Big 10 with its network and historically strong fundraising and the SEC with their sell-outs and tv deal - they'll be fine, no need to add in deadweight. So an inferior conference expands by 3 more teams, big deal. That's just 3 more teams the large revenue programs have to subsidize.

MB, I'm not saying the SEC and B1G have to move to 16 teams...I'm saying IF that's the case, your 14th, 15th, 16th teams might not be huge additions, but it is a necessary evil.

Rumors are Texas and ND to the ACC for non-football sports. Both independent for football
  • Manhattan Buckeye
Can't imagine why the ACC would agree to that. Dilute the conference without adding the revenue.

It's like taking a supermodel out to a nice steak dinner, only to watch her go have sex with the bartender. Makes zero sense.

I've heard that is exactly that...a rumor

Everything I've heard says the SEC wants to target new states for the conference. That would be WVU and VT.

Puts TCU in a weird position doesn't it? They're all set to join Big East next year....now what though?

Their AD just released a statement..sounded realllll nervous

Some of these moves sound so ridiculous. Teams are moving just to move, not really improving their financial or competitive situations.

One thing to consider if the Big East self combusts. Notre Dame is in that conference for everything but football. If there is a mass exodus out, this might force them to explore another conference. Hopefully Jim Delany has his cell phone charged

    Another question I wonder about...

Do the basketball schools of the Big East just leave the conference, especially if the the Big XII misfits enter the conference? No offense to Kansas, who would a good boost to Big East Basketball, but the other schools don't really add much to the basketball end of things (Syracuse and Pittsburgh would be hard to replace basketball-wise).

If the conference moves are inevitable, then I love this.

At this point I feel like all do the college presidents, athletic directors, and conference commissioners need to sit down in a room together and just work out all of this expansion stuff. Schools keep moving, screwing over other schools, who them move and screw others. Pretty soon we're going to see some team that just changed conferences change again in two years.

Just got an ESPN text stating the ACC voted to accept Syracuse and Pitt.
  • NilesPacMan
The USA Today article mentions that the ACC is looking at UConn and Rutgers as well. If I'm those two, I don't know how I don't accept the offer.

Stick a fork in them, the Big East is done.

    *As a football conference.

They will still be perfectly viable as a conference for basketball and all other sports.

Maybe, maybe not. Notre Dame no longer has reason to stay, and look for Cincy/L'ville and maybe WVU to try to hook up with the Big 12 leftovers to stay BCS eligible. All that is left are the Catholic schools that don't have football programs.
