I watched most of the show...thought it was very interesting.

Also thought a comment that Jim Nantz had during the Big 10 tournament was interesting....he said that the Fab 5 set the Michigan program back 20 years.

They really didnt like Duke did they?

I was never a Duke fan. Coach K I can stand because he is a disciple of The General. When the michigan players were talking of Duke it wreaked of jealousy. It was quite pathetic. If you asked me my opinion of Duke prior to taht piece I woulda said I didnt like them much, but after hearing those remarks, I dont know, it kinda changed my opinion I guess. When someone shows outward jealousy and ignorance toward something else it usually pushes me to the other side so now I kinda side with Duke! and this is coming from a guy who my brother and hung a Laetnner dummy in effigy back in teh day!

Fab 5....your comments made you look sooooo pathetically jealous

Jalen Rose said about the Duke title game "I was okay with the loss, because I know we lost to the better team" How does that reek of jealousy?

That didnt set them back 20 years. Shitty coachign and recruiting set them back 20 years

"I thought Christian Laettner was an overrated b*tch!"

I got a kick out of that.

As for the twenty years to undeo stuff....BS. It was a shot to them, but it shouldnt ever take a program that long, no matter how bad it was.

This is the sentiment that I don't really understand. Did it hurt the program? I don't know. With the notoriety of the Fab 5, you would have thought a coach would have been able to use that in recruiting as a benefit. And the Michigan AD set the program back by not finding the right coach.

It's laughable to say those guys set the program back 20 years.

Did you hear them talking about the game and how much they hated duke and why? Jealouse that Hill had parents doing what parents should be doing. Ripping Laetnner and such. Saying duke only recruited certain players and never would recruit guys like them.

The whole segment of talking about duke and their hatred, and why they hated them, wreaked of jealousy. They hated them for jealous reason.

I feel like they hated the duke players, not actually duke. Whether or not it was a racial thing, or a public vs private school thing, or whatever, they didn't really like Duke's players, but none of them had anything bad to say about Duke I don't think

Undisputed #1 recruit in the country. Took Detroit Country Day to 3 state titles. Came to Toledo and played St. Johns, my dad went to the game and said Webber is by far the best HS player he has seen (never saw LeBron). But he has seen some amazing players live (Ewing, Iverson, Webber, Oden, Durant, Gordon, Montross, Jeffries, etc). He was the recruit that was going to change UofM, and he did, it just wasnt legal haha.

But yeah, its actually a little surprising he wasnt an MVP type player in the NBA sooner (granted very good from his ROY first season).

They did say that they didnt like Duke because they wouldnt recruit guys like themselves. They took shots at Duke in how they wouldnt recruit certain players, and they said that they fel tthe black players on Duke were Uncle Toms. I got the genuine feeling of hatred through jealousy.

Kind of the same way Rose was talking about him going to a Detroit Public School and Webber going to a Detroit Private School.

I can see what they were saying. Duke was and always has been very white collar. Have you ever seen/heard of them having players with character issues while in school or a "thug" mentality? They viewed it as inner city vs. suburbs or something.

Well that was part of it. Duke recruited Webber but didnt even contact Rose, Howard, or King. No clue on Ray Jackson.

Granted Webber was the top recruit. But Howard as top 5, and Rose was damn high as well (dont recall what number exactly). They did hold a grudge in that regard, but Webber going to Private and getting pursed by Duke just added their thoughts.

Didnt Webber go to Detroit Country Day? A HS in our league played DCD a few years ago in football (they couldnt find anyone else to play them in ohio....schools too scared) and I checked out their tuition.....15-18k a year for HS. WOW!

Any school can pick and choose whom they recruit. If a school prefers to pursue certain types of players who they feel are upstanding citizens....more power to them. I believe bobby knight also tried to pursue similiar type players. Doenst make it racist, just makes it prudent to get guys who can play ball AND are good people. That can be black, or white, folks.

Are you that young, auto? Webber was a monster.

As far as the jealousy, Rose was simply being honest about how he felt at that age. And frankly, if I would've been in his shoes, I probably woulda felt the same. Also, when you're the up-and-comers at that age, you use whatever you can to pump yourself up more for the battles ahead and the Fab Five played that "us against the world" ard brilliantly amongst each other.

Burwell made a great point, it was a generational thing. I didn't catch any of the guys saying they still hated Duke, but when they were teenagers....they couldn't stand. I viewed Duke as preppy goody goody's back then who always won so I couldn't stand them. Now, being 20 years older, I have a ton of respect for Coach K and their program.

I like when Jalen said what he thought about Laettner but then followed that up by pointing out that he was wrong because Laettner had game.

Dude was just being honest and I respect that. I've always been a fan of Jalen's but even moreso after last night. Disappointed in Webber who was always my favorite.

Great talent, changed the culture, etc. but what I'll remember most is the brotherhood, the togetherness. Genuine IMO.

I do give him credit in saying Laettner had game. Either way ya wanna say it, and I do agree with you about Rose's statements, they still wreaked of jealousy.

I do remember watchin that Duke and Michigan game though. I know duke won and it was very close (as i said I didnt watch much of the show last nite) and told my dad that this Michigan team is gonna be very good. It was a sat or sunday afternoon...believe it was sat

I'm 26. I knew of the Fab 5 as a kid, but can't really remember watching them. I had no idea that Webber had such a good overall game. He could handle the ball well and had some sick passing skills for a big man.
  • Laley23
I dont get this jealousy thing. OF COURSE they were jealous. They were playing the defending champions and thought they were better, yet were the underdogs. Everyone hated Duke, if you werent a Dukie.

I think he averaged like 25, 10 and 5 for a a few years in SacTown.

I didnt like Duke either. Maybe jealousy is the wrong word. I dont know what else to describe it as though when players have a hatred toward someone else who is doing the right thing. They hated Grant Hill because they felt he was an uncle tom, Laetner because they felt he was he was perceived as too perfect and pristine, the duke program because it wouldnt recruit a guy like him and such because of his background. They seemed to hate them for a different reason than most of us did...because they won alot.

I know my brother's and I didnt like Laettner and Hurley becauase they looked like fairies playing basketball!

btw laley......Two more season for Crean? If he does not turn it around with some of the classes he has coming in he could be gone? If they take a step backwards next year...that could be the end of him. Creek needs to regain his form. Very disappointing being an IU fan nowadays. I admit, my interest has waned steadily after BK was fired. I see the african version of Butthead got UAb into the tournament somehow.....that was a joke they made it.

I'm 27 and remember Webber pretty vividly. I always thought he was one of the most underrated players in the NBA. Super athletic and was one of the best passing bigs to ever play.

I didn't start getting into college hoops until junior high. I was 7 when he got to Michigan lol.

WhenI think of him its when he was in Sacramento with Peja and J Will. They were fun to watch.

How can they have set the program back 20 years when it hasn't even been 20 years? Most of the aftermath didn't start until 1997, and the big sanctions weren't handed out until 2003 I think.

Precisely why Fab Five didn't like them. Duke didn't recruit the kids from the hood. Only the perceived good kids, many of whom were white. If you know much about this time period, it was a time of rap and hip hop, and almost a small black rights movement period. These inner city kids were angry. Duke was a target for them.

Like others said, I didn't like Duke then because because they did seem like fairies. I can only imagine how much the Fab Five hated them.

They still play like fairies today. 7 footers flopping to get charge calls and the whole team doing nothing but shooting 3s.
