2011 Michigan Recruiting

    That was fast.

A good move, in the near term.
I think he can get the program back on solid ground in a few years, get them to some bowl games, near the top of the Big Ten and then Michigan will find a bigger fish.

Yet.... he didn't have a losing record....

I was pointing out that your rebuttal was absolutely ridiculous.

Another shitty hire IMO. You're UM, and you got a guy with a losing record? UM just ain't what it used to be. It had to be a UM guy, didn't it. Well be doin this in another 3 years.
  • Hb31187
So is pegging someone a failure before one coached game at a new job

Who was Michigan supposed to hire? Its not THAT attractive of a job, top tier coaching candidates werent exactly lining up

He DOES have a losing record.

I am hesitant to pass judgement on this hire based simply on a losing record.

I remember a guy named Gene Chizik who went 5-19 while coaching Iowa State before taking a job at Auburn in 2009, and I think that turned out ok ...

I still can't believe Miles passed the job up. The dude has gotta know that LSU fans have a strong distaste for him.

Well it's turned out ok FOR NOW. lol But if the NCAA or Feds come knocking again, then it might not end up so great.

UM won't go out and pay $180,000 for a Heisman caliber QB and the Big Ten doesn't allow over signing like Chizik made use of while at Auburn. Getting those 5-8 extra players every recruiting season can make one hell of a difference over the course of a few seasons, talent-wise.

I don't think your comparison works.

Anyway, I see Hoke as a decent coach, not great. But with UM's resources and his Ohio connections, he should at least be able to get them back to where they were under LLLLLoyd in a few years. It seems to take an Ohio native to have any hope of success while at UM. :)

Never underestimate the power of the greenback.

I wouldn't be happy were I a UM fan, more because they were yet again forced to accept choice #3. But at the same time, I would be ecstatic that Rich Rod has cleaned his shit out. I don't know much about Hoke, I'm sure we'll learn more here soon, but he can hardly F'up worse than Rich Rod did. He's a defense guy that much I know, spent 8 years at UM so he gets it. Just gotta be patient.

Is that because the FCS was called Division I-AA at the time? Because he wasn't 0-0 at that level.

    FBS* my bad

Looking at his seasons at BSU and SDSU, he seems to have a bunch of shitty years sprinkled with some okay years with one great year in there.

As a UM fan, I'd be thinking "eek"

I would equate that to someone who would label a rookie player in the NBA a bust after 11 games of a 82 game season.

I guess there are some details and characteristics that we all don't know, but to me, it is weird that Michigan would have to go to a guy who has had one great season at a low rent school and a couple other winning/mediocre seasons. On the other hand, has Michigan ever really hired a big name coach? Dickrods resume looked pretty good because he won at least a few years in a row; if nothing else, he looked like he could sustain success. This guy.....does that one season at Ball State with an (rare for the location) NFL QB mean that much?

Do folks consider Hoke a "hot name" who was bound to get a bigger gig - bigger than Michigan if they didn't pounce on him? Do Michigan fans feel like they struck out because of not getting Harbaugh or Miles - or do you think the Michigan AD is a little disappointed? Just not sure what to think of this.
