Ok so take all that money and divide it among the thousands of athletes playing sports in college. It still doesn't amount to much. It just isn't feasible to give college athletes a paycheck. -

In theory? Yes
For compliance purposes? No, they're owned by the university until they graduate or leave the school.
Jordo, we're just not going to see eye to eye on this, but you're actually starting to sound absurd. Have Posey, who definitely has NFL potential, drop out of school to work? C'mon Man! -

The engineers at Apple make billions for that company, and many of their salaries don't come near the value of the benefits paid to scholarship athletes. That's the way business works, and it's a weak excuse.
You have to look at the total benefits package, not just cash compensation. Free tuition, free housing, free books, a stipend on top of that, and a very public stage to showcase their abilities. It isn't like the universities are giving them nothing in return here. -
lhslep134Mulva;612681 wrote: free housing, .
Therein lies the problem that Mrs. Posey pointed out.
It's not free housing after freshman year. And rent at OSU, while not skyhigh, is still pretty high for a family that isn't well off at all. -

Then take out student loans like everyone else. -
darbypitcher22I believe they are getting a stipend that goes towards that rent, or should be put towards it, are they not?

It is over $100, I'm like 95% sure.
OSU is a bad example. It's pretty good here, good enough for some players to use it towards car payments if their family can afford everything else.
It's much worse at other schools I imagine. -
MulvaUSC's monthly stipend is more in the $1000 range (but the cost of living is much higher). I would wager it's at least $400-500 at OSU.

Prescott
I heard a former OSU on the radio yesterday. If I am remembering correctly, he got $600.00 per month for rent, utilities and some food.He shared an apt. with another player.I believe they are getting a stipend that goes towards that rent, or should be put towards it, are they not?
Rent 600.00/month
Utilities-100.00/month
Cable-$100.00/month
If things are split equally, that leaves $200.00 for cell phone, drug store items, clothes, etc...... -
darbypitcher22^^^^^
what do these guys need anything more than basic cable?
I would think with the amount of time they spend at the WHAC and with classes that the electric bill could be kept fairly low as well... I know I spend almost zero time except for sleeping inside my apartment at school -
jordo212000This is again directed at Posey and Pryor. They have hundreds if not thousands of dollars worth of tats on their body. You're telling me these two guys are hurting for money? Haha.
You know as well as I do that these two guys never pay for anything when they go out. Look at Greg Oden's article in a magazine a few years back. He said he lived better than 90% of Americans while he was in college. And he played basketball. The number 2 sport. Football players get taken care of and you know it -

I was including internet access.what do these guys need anything more than basic cable?
Utilities include gas, electric, water, and sewage.that the electric bill could be kept fairly low as well...
They would also have to buy renter's Insurance as well as automobile insurance. -

They wouldn't "have" to do that. I don't have renter's insurance, and I just don't believe that every single player on the team NEEDS a car. -

Even if they do, why would that tie into their scholarship? Academic scholarships don't take that into consideration. There is typically a travel allowance, but if you want to have a car, its up to you to be an adult and deal with the costs that go along with it.
-edit, additionally, we've "rented" for over 10 years in our lifetimes. We have never purchased renter's insurance. -

Not sure how OSU works, but at the college I attended the athletes had their own cafeteria that was available 6 days a week which wasn't accessible for anyone else at the school, with no cost to the student. They also got a card voucher (for lack of better words) for the general student cafeteria for lunch since it was much closer to classes - as well as for Sunday since the athletic cafeteria was closed. They didn't have to worry about food. Obviously no one wants to eat in the cafeteria every day, but stipends help pay for outside food purchases. In short, none of the student-athletes were starving, or likely had to even pay for their food. -
derek bomarPryor lived at the Quarry last year, and in Harrison West this year. If any of you are familiar with the two spots, the rent isn't cheap...he's a fucking moron

gerb131Ever think a tat artist did these guys for free to get there name out there?
-
devil1197Suspend them for the Sugar Bowl and hope they declare.
OSU will be fine as I thought Posey was going Pro anyways. Herron isn't the best RB on the roster and Miller will take over imo (better thrower just not as physically gifted even though we don't use Pryor that much in the running game). -
spartybbcoachI agree with ESPN's Mark May and other experts, if this was another school in some other conference these money grabbing idiots would be suspended for the bowl game. It is all about the money. If Tressel had any balls he would sit them for the bowl game, but WE all know that will not happen. F--- all of them and Ohio State.

Would have been pretty smart if he planned it that way. Although he would have had to have known in advance that they were going to get bustedEver think a tat artist did these guys for free to get there name out there? -

You really thought that Posey would declare before this? There are so many receivers in front of him (Green, Jones, Blackmon) that before this, that would have been a really bad idea. Now that situations are different, who knows what will happen.
