Orrville Basketball

smanOk...first of all I am saddened to hear that there has been another incident involving some of our kid's. It's wrong....period!! I'm not going to even say what should be done, who is responsible, and all the other stuff being discussed on here....i'm not smart enough or in the mix to say anything. I just have to almost laugh at how everyoone on here is so judgemental......how many of you on here drank or smoked while you were in high school?? You all act like this has never happened before!! This has been going on since i was in school and that was many, many year's ago!! Yes, i was guilty of it too!! Guess what people...it will happen again!!! No matter what they're parent's say, do, or threaten...and no matter what the coaches, teacher's, and administrator's say, do, or threaten!! Hope i did'nt offend anyone!!! They are kid's.....they think they know everything....just like we all did!! All anyone can do is tell them it's wrong and bad for you and even give them example's of what happen's when you do "party". But in the end it's still the kid's who are gonna make they're own decision no matter who the coach is or who the parent's are.
-
imjustmeAnd, just because they think they know everything doesn't mean that they should be without punishment.

Seems some are still missing these lessons!ionab wrote: ......Integrity, Morals, Ethics, Good Character. Believe it or not, we here in Orrville believe in these things and we teach them to our children...... -
OrrPrideMore drama. So go figure, the now series 62, comes on.
This is crap. Coming on here an making judgements about kids without having the facts and knowing just what happened is absurd. Assuming since they are athletes they get special treatment is stupid. If there was proof more than one kid was involved, they would have been punished also. Trust the Admin. they handled the situation and acted on in with the information given them. -
Series62I'm not being judgmental. I'm pointing out the fact that for as many times as it has happened, there has been no real discipline, especially since they play sports. Many of you applauded the football coach and now current basketball coach for their fine moral character and denounced the former basketball coach as having a lack of same. Some have accused him as the reason for those that seem to repeatedly get in trouble didn't play basketball. Is that being judgmental on your part?
Some have played football for the last 4 years and were therefore around both of these coaches of high moral character.
Inasmuch as I know Coach Slaughter, Coach Davault and Coach Short, you cannot blame either of these men for the stupidity of those involved for the first time or the tenth time. -

The crap is the activity they that are involved in. Be it one or one hundred.OrrPride wrote: More drama. So go figure, the now series 62, comes on.

The special treatment was witnessed about 8 months ago! -
OrrPrideWhat special treatment was that? They were all punished, even the one that was not currently in his season. I am not going to continue this discussion with you series. I know where you will go with it and I'm not going be responsible for keeping your negativity brewing.
-
Old RiderHe say! She Say! But I say lets just face it....although it should not be tolerated and there should be tougher consequences for actions....kids have been doing it for years and it will remain that way when my kids are in school unfortunately. You can punish, suspend, whatever you will, but it will still take place!
Its the truth! -
BRFWell, what a day of reading this was! I was thinking about staying out of it, but decided to make a post before I got the "and where is BRF, why isn't he commenting NOW?" type of stuff.
So here I am. Alive and kicking.
First off, I am very sorry about what has happened. That doesn't change how I feel about the great tournament run. Those involved will be dealt with and I am just sickened by the airing out of it on here. To put this on the coach's doorstep as his fault and infer to the community "look what it got you" is absurd.
Secondly, I was initially stunned by some comments made earlier today, but now realize where they are coming from. I am ticked off that certain posters seem to be relishing in all this. But upon further reflection, it figures. It is stunning to me how certain posters refrained from making posts during this tournament run, then the SWOOPING down from the lurking trees to SEIZE (with great delight, it appears) on this opportunity to TRY to make others look bad.
"Unbelievable" -
RedRider1well said BRF.
There does seem to be a lot of relishing going on, but after watching the turnaround the basketball program experienced this past season, you kust knew that any negativity would be seized upon with lightning speed....even if it meant tearing down teenage kids......and that's exactly what has happened.
I'd encourage anyone who thinks there's special treatment going on to call a board member or admin member. I'm sure they'd be willing to hear you out.....you're a taxpayer after all. -
OrrPridegood points BRF and RedRider.

Series62
NO!! You were stunned by the fact that while you and others were trying to blame the former coach for loss of pride in the community and basketball you found that all the morality you insisted was infused by the football program and the current basketball program isn't any more influential as you thought it would be. As I said before, I know that "NONE" of the coaches are to blame for this activity by those students.BRF wrote: Well, what a day of reading this was! Upon reflection, if you as a teacher cared so much, and are of the "high" moral character you portend to be, perhaps you should get involved and mentor those that seem to continue to get into this trouble instead of just "shaking their hands".
And the "others" whoever they are, made themselves look bad! -
Series62So what, they had a good basketball season! All the negativity they're facing is a result of their own actions. Those "teenage kids" are tearing themselves down with the choices THEY made!
Like 5knots said,
Especially this, "What is around the corner is all of us standing in line at someone's calling hours."5knots wrote: rider80, I'm with you on this. As parents we cannot continue to sit on our hands and let kids keep making the same mistakes. Unbelievable is the correct word on what is unfolding and what is being let go. I don't know the whole story. Seems nobody does. Why that shouldn't be our business is up for argument. In my mind I want to know who is making dumb decisions so I can make sure my kids are not with them. some seem to think we keep these things quiet? To protect who? the ones who keep putting everyone else at risk? I need to know these things....we all need to know these things so we can keep an eye out for all our youth. It is another dark day in Rider country. I don't care if it just after a State Championship this tolerance of stupidity must stop now. What is around the corner is all of us standing in line at someone's calling hours. I don't think any one wants that. -
rrfanHey series when did any of us blame Coach Short for kids getting into trouble? I never did, there were other issues but we never said anything about him in that area.
HOW ABOUT THE PARENTS! Maybe we should be talking about that.
Also, Old Rider is 100% right. These problems are not new. I might say that these kids can't stop getting cought. No Not all kids do it but some will always have problems.
Many would say that athletes are punished harder. If you are a none athlete what punishment is there? Think about that.
Series62/aka bigP do you ever post anything when things are going well or give any praise to anybody?
BRF should have gevin these boys a hand shake when they got back, unfortunatley now some of them also need smacked in the head and put on track.
I am not sure where the coach even comes into a drinking problem with High School kids...that is football, basketball, track, soccer(do we still have that) or any other sport? -
OrrPrideI need to clear one thing up...........there was only ONE kid found to be guilty in this situation. You all keep saying "kids"........well just because the team was there and some of the kids on that team had been in trouble in the past, don't assume they are involved now. In fact, some of those kids are more mature than some of the people who post on here.
-
RedRider1rrfan,
you didn't hear it...no issues with kids as far as i know during the Short era. Well, you had kids be ineligible and kids transferring & deciding not to play, but that's a little different animal. -
RedRider1From someone very close to the situation....this was ONE KID who admitted wrongdoing. All were questioned by the Superintendent directly.
We can specualte all we want, but I think we owe some benefit of the doubt to the admins who were directly involved in speaking to the kids. Let's let them do their job. You don't like it, call them and speak with the directly.
I think saying that one is covering for more than one is awful assumptive....and potentially hurtful.
Is it unfortunate? Certainly. Does it matter if it was one or four or twelve? No. Are kids being covered for by some administration that cares more about letting kids play sports that about student safety? I don't think so. Do the rules need reviewed and made more strict? Yes. -
rrfanRr1- that is a different animal...I think. One reflects more on the coach than others IMO.

5knotsOK sman, just because you or we "used" to do something is not really a defense of conduct. You know, "we" used to pump down salt pills between twoX days to "replenish" the sodium?????? we certainly don't do that anymore because we know better, We "used" to limit water intake at the the same time?????? hmmmm don't do that anymore. Do a little research while you are online and read up on the effects of alcohol on the juvenile developing brain. Couldn't pick a worse time to put it in your body. Medical science has taught us quite a few things we shouldn't do that we "used" to do. I think we need to move beyond the "kids will be kids" attitude because that is why we always end up here. I can name you many kids/athletes/students who don't do or condone this behavior, if they can follow the rules we should expect the same from all, if some keep choosing the the wrong option then we need to make the penalty harsher. I am sure the Adm has done what they could here...they will not brush anything aside. I am positive of that. Sounds like it was one word against another.
For the most we have had a good discussion on here and if nothing else are raising some awareness . I don't expect to create policy on an sports forum, but it is a healthy exchange of opinion. thank you. -
RedRider1"kids will be kids" is antiquated. Kids will always test the limits of rules....so the potential consequences need to be written so as to give them pause.

5knots^^I bet your English comp teacher loved you! You have a way with the written.
