WOOSTER DIII SECTIONAL/DISTRICT 2012

  • Flash
They'll have to beat Loudonville first. Both games were ugly , but the second one was worse. Waynedale shot 26% in the first half. Still had a chance to win at the end. Loudonville won their league. Saw Newt Wildy at the game. He's too, busy campaigning the ref's to get on the chat boards.

Hillsdale will have to play a good game to beat Smithville

Absolutely. Hillsdale definitely has more weapons, but the smithies have been playing their best basketball lately.[

OSU coach (at the time) Randy Ayers was there to watch Manchester's Nate Schindewolf play...but he left talking about Ray & Denson of Orrville.

That was supposed to be the team to beat Orrville in districts. Not so much.

I won't be posting quarterly updates on this thread for the rest of the tournament... too much browsing from my phone while in a gym, and my battery is dying. I will continue to post all updates to my Twitter account, though. You can get them here:

    Friday's results:
    http://www.ohiobasketball.net/wooster/tournament.aspx

    Wellington 55
    Oberlin 46

This game was much closer than the final score indicates. Oberlin led for a lot of the game, but the Dukes took the lead and stretched it at the end with free throws.

    Norwayne 63
    Keystone 56

This was a great game as we expected it would be. Keystone made a huge charge in the 3rd quarter to take a 9-point lead. But that's when the Keystone students started chanting" Overrated". Oops! From there, Norwayne cut the deficit to 2 by the end of the quarter and ended up winning.

We appreciate the updates, Pit. How about some analysis of the semi-final matchups when they are official?
Thanks for clarifying what Keystone fans were chanting. I couldn't tell, but I'm glad they woke up the 'cat players. I haven't seen that fire for 8 or 10 games.

    Saturday finals:

    Hillsdale 51
    Smithville 44

The Smithies showed great hustle and effort in the first half and built a sizable lead while the Falcons seemed lazy and out of it. Then in the 2nd half Licata and the rest of the Hillsdale team was much more aggressive and chipped away, earning the win.

    Orrville 58
    Loudonville 42

It was the Drew Brenner and Trevor Mowery show. Both went for 20+. But the Redbirds had absolutely no answer for Drew Brenner on the block, where he did most of his damage. This game was never really in doubt.
  • Flash
The difference makers were Trevor Summers hitting the outside shots when they tried to double down low and even though Mowery had an incredible night he was forced to do it himself due to pressure from Zook and Landis so he couldn't get the rest of the team in the offense. Beans was held under his average by Brenner and Winters.

Hillsdale will match up better with Orrville with their big man and Licata will match up with Brenner. Hillsdale did look lacadaisical the first half, but stepped up when they needed to.

Yesterday after the girls district championship for Smithville, I was eating pancakes and saw a mother of a Smithville boys player tell a Hillsdale boys assistant coach that a single-digit win for the Falcons that evening would be the same as a loss. Uhh, really? I'm pretty sure a win is a win. LoL. Just a mother trying to make herself feel better if they make it close but still lose... or just trying to get into his head. Either way, I thought it was kind of funny.

Their two games during the season were only 7 and 8 point differences, both single digits. She must have been the lady behind us yelling at the refs and questioning calls. She also was calling for the 1 and 1 after the 3rd foul. Between her and the Smitihville players dad in front of us I didn't know which was more obnoxious.

This time of the year...you keep winning, you keep playing. Margin of victory is pointless.

Haha! The mother I'm referring to was seated to my left and towards the back (yelling a lot), and her husband was also to my left, but only a few rows up from the floor, often yelling commands to his son during the game. Maybe we're talking about the same mother/family?

At the far end seats, close to the foul line, and he was in the 2nd row , she was somewhere behind my seat in the 4th row, so it probably was the same "fans"

Yeah, I was sitting a couple of rows up from her. Loved the call for 1 and 1 after 3 fouls :). I thought I was done with her after the Smithville game ended. So later, I'm sitting in the fabulous Florentine Room at the Coccia House enjoying (I mean REALLY enjoying) my deluxe large pizza and cold one when in she walks. We were having a great basketball conversation at our table but she starts shooting off her mouth. We just did our best to ignore her but it was difficult. Imagine the poor guy who has to go home to that every night.

Worried about Orrville v. Hillsdale tomorrow night. We've ended their season 2 years in a row. I like the way we're playing right now, but wondering if the law of averages will come in to play?

I think we've got the talent to win districts, and we've played well of late...so who knows.

An Orrville/Norwayne final would be awesome but both need to win their semifinal. The game couldn't be moved to COW because of them hosting the NCAA's....meaning a PACKED house if they keep it at WHS.

Hey Refdawg you still going tonight and are you driving?

Can't see ringz allowing the $$$$$ to go elsewhere so looks like we will play at the high school.
  • THE4RINGZ
I am surprised that The COW got the second round of games, thus eliminating that venue. Ugh, that sucks for fans of both teams. Looks like you best get to WHS early if you wanna get a seat. I remember how packed the COW gym was two years ago for the Orrville v. Triway District final, no way that crowd fits into the gym at WHS.

Oh well, just make sure to hit the conession stand early and often, my kids need new unis.

Tell them if they want to sell more pizza at the end of the game to do deliveries to the seats ;)

Very convenient for the fans, I will pass the word along.

IMO, Orrville needs Winters to be able to play physical while not fouling. Many good post players have this ability. Winters does not, from what I've seen. He's either going for every single block on every single shot and getting in foul trouble, or becoming a teddy bear and allowing post players to go right around him. He has to find a happy medium. If he doesn't get a double-double in one of the next two games, I can't see Orrville winning the district.
