Any carpenters? I have another deck question...

  Instead of just staining our current deck I want to rip out the current surface and replace it. If I go with an angled pattern I can do our entire deck without any joints. The way our deck is currently laid out we have a ton of boards butting up against each other.

  The supports are currently ~16" but I'm reading that it needs to be 12" for angled decking. What kind of ramifications am I looking at if I just put down the angled decking anyway? As small as the deck is I can't imagine it would be a big deal but I wanted to check first. Obviously I'll go another route if the deck is going to crumble after a week.

  That isn't my back yard, just an example of the railing style we are going to go with.
  
  I think the current railings look okay, but a lot of them have started warping and a couple have some termite damage from before we even moved in. They also need to be stained periodically while the metal balusters are zero maintenance.

  Makes sense, I should have known that photo wasn't part of your deck. Fail on me. Metal balusters look nice as well.

  Thought about it but it would run a couple grand and our deck is small (only 216 sq ft).

  Do you have a front porch with railing as well? If so have you thought about replacing it with the same railing to make everything uniform?

  The composite material is the way to go, regardless of size! Money well spent!

  Our front porch is completely different. Uniformity would be impossible and unnecessary since you can't see both in the same view.

  I see where you are going with that now. Yeah, I would definitely put the metal balusters on the front porch.

  Yeah, they added almost that exact style above to a house on Holmes on Homes a few years ago and it made such a huge difference in the look of the house I have been a huge fan since.

  I wonder how hard it would be to replace the railing in the front? The deck I'm not worried about, it will be easy. The front I'd have to worry about attaching to the siding and to the giant pillars.

  I remember an "Ask This Old House" episode where they did that. You could maybe search their site and see if they have DIY videos or something?
