Any carpenters? I have another deck question...
-
justincredibleInstead of just staining our current deck I want to rip out the current surface and replace it. If I go with an angled pattern I can do our entire deck without any joints. The way our deck is currently laid out we have a ton of boards butting up against each other.
Here is a picture (from 4 years ago when we did our inspection):
The supports are currently ~16" but I'm reading that it needs to be 12" for angled decking. What kind of ramifications am I looking at if I just put down the angled decking anyway? As small as the deck is I can't imagine it would be a big deal but I wanted to check first. Obviously I'll go another route if the deck is going to crumble after a week. -
like_thatI am not a carpenter, but I like the deck.

sleeperI'll send LJ a PM, I think he did carpentry when he was in grade school or something.

karen lotzJesus Christ was a carpenter. Pray for help, either he or skyhook will answer.

I'll like it better once I replace the railing and the surface. I'll be adding metal balusters, I hate the current wood balusters.like_that;1147956 wrote:I am not a carpenter, but I like the deck.

Really, why? I think it looks nice.justincredible;1147963 wrote:I'll like it better once I replace the railing and the surface. I'll be adding metal balusters, I hate the current wood balusters.
Also, I was under the impression you lived in the city, where in the city did you get a backyard like that? -
Mr. 300I make more money than you, and your deck is crap compared to mine.

LJAre you gonna do the composite or artificial decking?

That isn't my back yard, just an example of the railing style we are going to go with.like_that;1147965 wrote:Really, why? I think it looks nice.

I think the current railings look okay, but a lot of them have started warping and a couple have some termite damage from before we even moved in. They also need to be stained periodically while the metal balusters are zero maintenance. -

Makes sense, I should have known that photo wasn't part of your deck. Fail on me. Metal balusters look nice as well.justincredible;1147968 wrote:That isn't my back yard, just an example of the railing style we are going to go with.

Thought about it but it would run a couple grand and our deck is small (only 216 sq ft).LJ;1147967 wrote:Are you gonna do the composite or artificial decking? -

Do you have a front porch with railing as well? If so have you thought about replacing it with the same railing to make everything uniform?justincredible;1147968 wrote:I think the current railings look okay, but a lot of them have started warping and a couple have some termite damage from before we even moved in. Mr. 300The composite material is the way to go, regardless of size! Money well spent!

Our front porch is completely different. Uniformity would be impossible and unnecessary since you can't see both in the same view.LJ;1147974 wrote:Do you have a front porch with railing as well? If so have you thought about replacing it with the same railing to make everything uniform? -

The metal would look good there too, but that is just me. I am a huge fan of that style.justincredible;1147978 wrote:Here is the front:

I see where you are going with that now. Yeah, I would definitely put the metal balusters on the front porch.LJ;1147989 wrote:The metal would look good there too, but that is just me. I am a huge fan of that style.

Yeah, they added almost that exact style above to a house on Holmes on Homes a few years ago and it made such a huge difference in the look of the house I have been a huge fan since.justincredible;1147994 wrote:I see where you are going with that now. justincredibleI wonder how hard it would be to replace the railing in the front? The deck I'm not worried about, it will be easy. The front I'd have to worry about attaching to the siding and to the giant pillars.

I remember an "Ask This Old House" episode where they did that. You could maybe search their site and see if they have DIY videos or something?justincredible;1148000 wrote:I wonder how hard it would be to replace the railing in the front?
