I was sick of arguing in circles. Obviously we are getting no where so why continue? I answered your questions, not sure what else I need to do.Steel Valley Football;1146062 wrote:Yep lol ok. Thanks for your helpful insight w this. -
GOONx19For real, though, did he call me black? What does this mean?

It's high school, not the federal government. It should be handled on a case by case basis.Steel Valley Football;1145918 wrote:Should there be a checks and balance system in place? Or should the schools just take every student's claim at face value?
Also, that is only one question. Breaking it in to two sentences with a question mark after each doesn't mean I need to provide two answers. Is this more clear? -

Most school administrators beg to differ. -

The school most certainly does play a part in making sure students meet graduation requirements. Isn't that what Guidance Counselors are for?? Sure, the students are responsible for doing the work, but to say graduating high school is solely on the shoulders of the student is a bit ridiculous.Steel Valley Football;1145811 wrote:Your last paragraph tells me all I need to know. *Its not the school's responsibility to make sure every gradation requirement of this student is in order. *That onus falls on the student. *The school board did exactly what it was supposed to do in this case.
The rest of your post is wishful ideology at best. *It' a school system, not a court system. *A student is either in class or not in class; either fighting or not fighting, etc and students who follow that setup are allowed to graduate. Special circumstances are handled separately, costing additional time and money. That's the current system. If voters want to implement and pay for a different setup then so be it. Any family who doesn't like it has the option to use a parochial or charter school. -
hoops23I highly doubt this kid would use his mom as an excuse to miss school and lie about it. Read the articles. SMH.

Certainly, as it applies to the entire student body. My comment applied to this single student.se-alum;1146089 wrote:The school most certainly does play a part in making sure students meet graduation requirements. If anything is ridiculous, it's IWP blaming the school for not letting this kid know he was missing too many days, which I'm pretty certain they did. -

No I didn't.Steel Valley Football;1145827 wrote:I didn't see you argue much for anything. It was mostly sarcasm and light-hearted insults. I did see IWP argue against have an attendance or fighting rule in place at all. I saw you suggest that schools need to make students' experience more enjoyable. I'm not getting on board that train though.
I said that having one single rule for those things that you stick to no matter the circumstances is stupid and lazy. Context matters. -

Calling an administration stupid and lazy, while not proposing an alternative solution, including an implementation process, is also stupid and lazy.
Rules are rules. -

I guess it's a good thing that our discussion has no bearing on anyone in the real life. Unlike a heavy handed school administration with a zero tolerance policy.Steel Valley Football;1146146 wrote:Calling an administration stupid and lazy, while not proposing an alternative solution, including an implementation process, is also stupid and lazy.

So rules are always to be adhered to with no thought whatsoever put into the context of the situation?Steel Valley Football;1146146 wrote:Calling an administration stupid and lazy, while not proposing an alternative solution, including an implementation process, is also stupid and lazy.
Rules are rules.
And I did propose an alternate solution. It's called actually look at what's happening. Every single kid in that school has an adviser assigned to them and that school isn't large at all. You bring that kid in and ask him why he's missing so much class. He explains the situation, you verify it, and then YOU LET THE KID FUCKIN WALK AT GRADUATION BECAUSE HE WAS HELPING HIS CANCEROUS MOM AND YOU ARENT HEARTLESS BASTARDS. -

I still think people aren't understanding why their is such a thing as a zero tolerance policy. There are always going to be cases where someone is jipped by the strict rule, but they are necessary to protect the idea of favoritism and so they aren't liable for lawsuits.I Wear Pants;1146155 wrote:So rules are always to be adhered to with no thought whatsoever put into the context of the situation?

Have the rule and then have a system for looking at appeals then. Not that damn difficult to do the right thing.sleeper;1146159 wrote:I still think people aren't understanding why their is such a thing as a zero tolerance policy. That still shows favoritism. Remember, rationality never wins.I Wear Pants;1146162 wrote:Have the rule and then have a system for looking at appeals then. Not that damn difficult to do the right thing. -

No it doesn't. It shows common sense.sleeper;1146163 wrote:That still shows favoritism. Remember, rationality never wins.
It's not like you asking your manager at McDonald's for 3 days off because your gerbil died and he denied it, but granted it to a co-worker who needed 3 days off because his grandmother died.
That doesn't show favoritism, it shows common sense and good judgement. -
sportchamppsThe school also banned him from prom and the class senior trip

The limit is high in my opinion. It doesn't seem that if they made the school aware of the situation that they would be unexcusde so having 16 days of them is really no argument.justincredible;1145991 wrote:I agree, but only two more than the "limit." -

Yeah, fuck this kid for having other things to worry about at the time like taking care of his cancerous mother and not properly getting excuses. Should just expel him.Con_Alma;1146309 wrote:The limit is high in my opinion. sportchamppsYeah they shoulda just called the truancy officer and had him pulled from the car he was driving his sick mother in and dragged to class.
