I'm pretty sure the rules is in place still. The simply made an exception.

I agree though. It's much like the flagpole case. The guy broke the rule, but since the media got a hold of it the HOA caved. For the most part, people only agree with rules when the rules are to their own benefit.

    Which one?

Steel Valley Football;1145643 wrote:Ok, so they'd need a list of this diseases. What if a case where a disease they hadn't thought of comes up?

What about an auto accident where there the mom became paralyzed and needed help to eat? Would that apply also? If so, what if the auto accident was a result of the mom doing drugs and she killed someone else in another car?

Hopefully, you see where I'm going w this. There are too many variables so they have a general rule in place and they work from there. Which is exactly what happened in this case. But, instead of thinking it through, people just immediately throw dumb comments around about how dumb and lazy the school ADs are.

High school's aren't prisons. Their purpose isn't to drown kids with rules and make their high school experience crap because them. Special circumstances do come up. Hopefully, you see where I'm going w this.

Steel Valley Football;1145832 wrote:So, Justin, what if what thavoice suggested is true? Should there be a checks and balance system in place? Or should the schools just take every student's claim at face value?

Since you obviously DIDN'T see where I was going w that.
justincredible;1145840 wrote:Case by case. Obviously they felt this kid had a legit case and reversed it. Perhaps they might not have reversed it if he had 26 unexcused absences instead of 16. He was only two over the limit.

You didn't see where I said they should approach it on a case by case basis? It's right there in my post where I quoted these questions. It's actually the first thing I said.

I think its more of a way to avoid racism or sexism or whatever ism some schmuck will bring up because they didn't get what they want. For example, they let this kid walk because he's white, and a black guy misses a day of school to take his mom to the doctor to get viagra for her F buddy, and he's denied walking at graduation. Good ol' Al will be right there with his "This is why blacks aren't all trillionaires because the white man is holding them back".

Zero tolerance may appear lazy, and sure it is, but its a way to avoid liability by hiding behind strict rules.

I agree. I got good grades by calling all of my teacher frauds and derelicts. Straight A's through pure intimidation.

Zero tolerance def is a lazy way to do things, but it is a way to set out the rules in advance so everyone knows the consequences of their actions instead of what MIGHT happen if they take it on a case-by-case basis.

I still think we dont know everything about this situation. I mean, what kind of parent wouldnt be in contact with the school about this? I think this is what happened......the kid took his mother to what she needed to do at times, sometimes just skipped out of school (maybe to work, maybe because he was too tired from working the night before) and now that it comes out that he cannot walk on graduation she comes up to say that it was because he always took me to my treatments and such.
I dont buy it that he misses those days because of this. Hell..it isnt like he isnt graduating! Getting out of having to sit through that is a blessing! We had a baseball game the day of our HS graduation....we marched in......they had a special presentation to us Seniors on the team and we took off! We could kind of hear the ceremony from the baseball field where we were taking BP before we left for the game but it was nice not having to sit through it all

Why are the absences unexcused if he's caring for a relative that's in need? Didn't they inform the school of when who would not be in, so that he might care for his mother?

16 days of unexcused is a lot.

I agree, but only two more than the "limit."

This. I think they knew the circumstances all along and are just trying to save face now.

I've analyzed the previous 93 posts and come to the difficult conclusion that SVF has provided a substantial amount of lawls on this thread.

I think she takes school seriously if one of her goals was to watch her son graduate. It also said there is no one else in the household so his sister can't just take a day off or his dad can't just drive her. This student kept his grades up enough to graduate while basically being the sole provider for his household. He is more prepared for college life (ie. Making time management decisions and real world situations) then 90% of his classmates who never missed a single day.
